    Notes: Abstract In this article, we describe a new approach to applying distributed artificial intelligence techniques to manufacturing processes. The construction of intelligent systems is one of the most important techniques among artificial intelligence research. Our goal is to develop an integrated intelligent system for real time manufacturing processes. An integrated intelligent system is a large knowledge integration environment that consists of several symbolic reasoning systems (expert systems) and numerical computation packages. These software programs are controlled by a meta-system which manages the selection, operation and communication of these programs. A meta-system can be implemented in different language environments and applied to many disciplines. This new architecture can serve as a universal configuration to develop high performance intelligent systems for many complicated industrial applications in real world domains.

    Notes: Abstract We present two defect correction schemes to accelerate the Petrov-Galerkin finite element methods [19] for nonlinear Volterra integro-differential equations. Using asymptotic expansions of the errors, we show that the defect correction schemes can yield higher order approximations to either the exact solution or its derivative. One of these schemes even does not impose any extra regularity requirement on the exact solution. As by-products, all of these higher order numerical methods can also be used to form a posteriori error estimators for accessing actual errors of the Petrov-Galerkin finite element solutions. Numerical examples are also provided to illustrate the theoretical results obtained in this paper.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper, we study the global convergence for the numerical solutions of nonlinear Volterra integral equations of the second kind by means of Galerkin finite element methods. Global superconvergence properties are discussed by iterated finite element methods and interpolated finite element methods. Local superconvergence and iterative correction schemes are also considered by iterated finite element methods. We improve the corresponding results obtained by collocation methods in the recent papers [6] and [9] by H. Brunner, Q. Lin and N. Yan. Moreover, using an interpolation post-processing technique, we obtain a global superconvergence of the O(h 2r )-convergence rate in the piecewise-polynomial space of degree not exceeding (r−1). As a by-product of our results, all these higher order numerical methods can also provide an a posteriori error estimator, which gives critical and useful information in the code development.

    Notes: Abstract This paper describes the construction of an Intelligent System for Operation Planning (ISOP) in heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) processes. The system contains important expertise, qualitative reasoning, and quantitative computation. It is used to assist or train operators to achieve better operation in HVAC systems. Expertise about operation planning is expressed as air enthalpy, and moisture conditions and air supply are considered as dynamic parameters. Therefore, it provides a real-time integrated operation planning method in HVAC processes. It offers better energy conservation, comfort and indoor air quality than other methods being currently used. ISOP consists of two levels of frames. The first level classifies HVAC systems by qualitatively reasoning the system structure information, and activates the subframe. In the second level, 16 frames that correspond to the HVAC system structure, accomplish indoor comfort setting, supply air parameter estimations, air enthalpy, and misture evaluation, and then recommend optimal operation conditions. An integrated distributed intelligent system framework is introduced to integrate qualitative reasoning and quantitative computation.

    Description: A novel electron drift injection (EDI) system aiming to improve breakdown behavior has been designed and constructed on the Joint Texas EXperiment Tokamak Tokamak. Electrons emitted by the system undergo the E × B drift, ∇ B drift and curvature drift in sequence in order to traverse the confining magnetic field. A local electrostatic well, generated by a concave-shaped plate biased more negative than the cathode, is introduced to interrupt the emitted electrons moving along the magnetic field line (in the parallel direction) in an attempt to bring an enhancement of the injection efficiency and depth. A series of experiments have demonstrated the feasibility of this method, and a penetration distance deeper than 9.5 cm is achieved. Notable breakdown improvements, including the reduction of breakdown delay and average loop voltage, are observed for discharges assisted by EDI. The lower limit of successfully ionized pressure is expanded.
