Description: Many plasma diagnostics contain complementary information. For example, the double-foil soft x-ray system (SXR) and the Thomson Scattering diagnostic (TS) on the Madison Symmetric Torus both measure electron temperature. The complementary information from these diagnostics can be combined using a systematic method based on integrated data analysis techniques, leading to more accurate and sensitive results. An integrated data analysis tool based on Bayesian probability theory was able to estimate electron temperatures that are consistent with both the SXR and TS diagnostics and more precise than either. A Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis to increase the flexibility of the tool was implemented and benchmarked against a grid search method.

Notes: Both fluorescence excitation and dispersed emission techniques have been used to study the S1←S0 electronic spectra of 1- and 2-hydroxynaphthalene (1/2HN) in the collision-free environments of a supersonic jet and a twice-skimmed molecular beam, using both pulsed and high-resolution cw lasers operating in the ultraviolet. In the jet experiments, we observe that each molecule exhibits two electronic origins, separated by 274 cm−1 in 1HN and by 317 cm−1 in 2HN. In the beam experiments, we resolve the rotational structure of each of the four bands and determine the inertial constants of all eight zero-point vibrational levels, accurate to ±0.1 MHz. We also determine the orientations of the four optical transition moments in the molecular frame. Significant differences in both the inertial constants and the transition moment orientations are observed in each band. Similar experiments have been performed on the hydroxy-deuterated 1/2HN (1/2DN).A comparison of the results obtained for 1/2DN with those for the corresponding bands in 1/2HN makes possible the determination of the center-of-mass coordinates of the hydroxy hydrogen in both electronic states, accurate to ± 0.02 A(ring). Differences in these coordinates reveal that the two electronic origins in each spectrum are caused by the presence of two N–O–H(D) rotamers in both 1H(D)N and 2H(D)N, one with a cis (or syn) geometry and one with a trans (or anti) geometry with respect to the naphthalene frame. We make an unambiguous assignment of each origin to a specific rotamer. The lower energy origin in the spectrum of 1HN is that of the cis rotamer, whereas the lower energy origin in the spectrum of 2HN is that of the trans rotamer. We then use these results, together with those of ab initio calculations on the ground electronic states of all four isomers, to explore the reasons for the differences in their energies, to account for the orientations of their transition moments, and to specify other features of the S0 and S1 potential energy surfaces along the cis–trans isomerization coordinate. Motion along this coordinate requires significant displacement of the oxygen atom and selected ring hydrogens as well as rotation about the C–O bond, in both electronic states.

Notes: Abstract Fourier transform algorithms are described using tensor (Kronecker) products and an associated class of permutations. Algebraic properties of tensor products and the related permutations are used to derive variants of the Cooley-Tukey fast Fourier transform algorithm. These algorithms can be implemented by translating tensor products and permutations to programming constructs. An implementation can be matched to a specific computer architecture by selecting the appropriate variant. This methodology is carried out for the Cray X-MP and the AT&T DSP32.

Notes: Abstract We discuss a programming methodology based on the use of multilinear algebra to design and implement parallel algorithms for linear computations. In particular, we review techniques for implementing expressions involving the tensor product. We then show how the tensor product can be used to formulate Strassen's matrix multiplication algorithm. We report on our experience using this formulation and these techniques to implement a parallel version of Strassen's matrix multiplication algorithm on the Encore Multimax.

Notes: Summary A specialized glpK transducing phage, λdglpK100, has been isolated and characterized with respect to DNA structure. The glpK component of the glpKF operon has been localized within a 2.0 kilobase pair (kbp) region of the approximately 8.24 kbp bacterial DNA insert, and the positions of BamHI, EcoRI and HindIII restriction sites within this DNA have been identified.

Notes: Summary Mutants of a specialized λdmet transducing phage bearing the metJBLF gene cluster of Escherichia coli K12 were constructed using transposon Tn5. Two of these mutants, λdmet128::Tn5, MW77 and λdmet128::Tn5, 3–1, were used to locate precisely as well as confirm the existence of the metF transcription unit (approximately 1,000 base pairs in size). The introduction of new restriction sites within the metJBLF gene cluster due to the Tn5 insertion events allowed the metF transcription unit to be cloned into the high copy number plasmid pBR322. Analyses of the structures of two of these recombinant plasmids, pTJ77H and pTJ3-1H, are presented. Expression of the plasmid borne metF allele in cells grown in the absence, or presence, of exogenous L methionine (0.2 mM) demonstrates that the amplification of the metF copy number does not abolish met regulon mediated control of the gene's activity.

Notes: Abstract The chemical bioregulator, 2-(3, 4-dichlorophenoxy)-triethylamine (DCPTA), which has markedly stimulated photosynthesis, carbon allocation, and above- and below-ground growth of several agricultural crops, caused small growth effects on red pine (Pinus resinosa L.) germinants and one and two-year-old seedlings, mainly to foliage and stems. At low DCPTA concentrations, i.e. 10 ppm, growth tended to be promoted, whereas at 100 ppm growth appeared to be suppressed. Continued testing of the bioregulator's effect on growth and physiology of other tree species is recommended.
