    Notes: Nanostructured CdS was deposited electrochemically on porous silicon (PS) substrate/cathode. The PS-supported CdS deposits were found to be uniformly packed particles of ∼100 nm, each of which is an aggregate of smaller clusters of several nanometers as revealed by scanning electron microscope and confirmed by glancing incidence x-ray powder diffraction. No significant CdS deposition into the pore of porous silicon is found under the reported experimental conditions. X-ray absorption fine structures (XAFS), both extended x-ray absorption fine structure and x-ray absorption near edge structures, across the S and the Si K edge of the samples have been investigated. The structure and electronic properties of the CdS/PS composite are discussed on the basis of the XAFS results obtained using multichannel detection (total electron and x-ray fluorescence yields) from a series of CdS and PS samples. The optical luminescence behavior of CdS/PS was also investigated utilizing a technique often referred to as synchrotron x-ray excited optical luminescence (XEOL). By selecting excitation photon energies near the Si and the S K edge, the luminescence originated from both CdS and PS can be distinguished in the XEOL spectra. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The structure and bonding of amorphous carbon nanowires and amorphous carbon nanowires-converted multiwalled carbon nanotubes have been investigated with carbon K-edge near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure using surface-sensitive total electron yield, and bulk-sensitive fluorescence yield. The results strongly support that amorphous carbon nanowire is a precursor to multiwalled carbon nanotubes. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Photoluminescence from tris (8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (Alq3) films has been observed using tunable soft x rays as an excitation source. The photons were tuned to energies above and below the K absorption edges of C, N, O, and Al. The luminescence was in turn used to monitor the absorption. It was found that the luminescence induced by soft x ray exhibits additional emission bands at shorter wavelengths compared to ultraviolet excitation. While all K edges exhibit optical x-ray absorption fine structures (XAFS) similar to those of total electron and fluorescence yield, the optical XAFS at the C K-edge resonance are enhanced for the C1s to π* transitions, indicating site specificity. These observations are attributed to the energetics of the process and the local electronic structure. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We suggested a simple method for obtaining the quantitative transition rate constants of trans–cis isomerization in the pseudo-stilbene-type of azobenzene molecule. The absorbances of the solution and film of a poly(malonic ester) containing disperse red 1(PDR1) were measured with the pumping beam intensity, and analyzed by the rate equation for the fractions of trans and cis conformers. The rate constants of PDR1 solution and film were successfully determined. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Description: This paper focuses on the stability analysis of a delay differential system encountered in modelling immune dynamics during imatinib treatment for chronic myelogenous leukemia. A simple algorithm is proposed for the analysis of delay effects on the stability. Such an algorithm takes advantage of the particular structure of the dynamical interconnections of the model. The analysis shows that the model yields three fixed points, two of which are always unstable and one of which is sometimes stable. The stable fixed point corresponds to an equilibrium solution in which the leukemia population is kept below the cytogenetic remission level. This result implies that, during imatinib treatment, the resulting anti-leukemia immune response can serve to control the leukemia population. However, the rate of approach to the stable fixed point is very slow, indicating that the immune response is largely ineffective at driving the leukemia population towards the stable fixed point. To extend the stability analysis with respect to the delay parameter, we conduct a global non-linear analysis to demonstrate the existence of unbounded solutions. We provide sufficient conditions based on initial cell concentrations that guarantee unbounded solutions and comment on how these conditions can serve to predict whether imatinib treatment will result in a sustained remission based on a patient's initial leukemia load and initial anti-leukemia T cell concentration.
