    Notes: We study the transmission properties of a two-dimensional L-shaped quantum wire where a double potential barrier is placed at the corner. The localized state at the corner region without the barriers is pushed into the continuum in the presence of the barriers, resulting in resonant tunneling. Through resonant tunneling, reflection at the corner can be eliminated. The transmission is sharply peaked at resonant energies which can be tuned by applying a voltage. We propose that this system can be used as a basic element for connecting quantum devices in a circuit where bending of the connecting wire is necessary.

    Notes: We have investigated quantum transport through long wires in which a section consists of one or several Al atoms in a chain. The self-consistent ground state electronic potential is obtained using the first principles ab initio method and the conductance is calculated by solving a three-dimensional quantum scattering problem. We have observed quantized conductance when there are two or more Al atoms in the chain. Resistance is calculated for these wires at the Fermi level. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report properties of parametric electron pumping in the presence of a superconducting lead. Due to a constructive interference between the direct reflection and the multiple Andreev reflection, the pumped current is greatly enhanced. For both quantum point contacts and double barrier structures at resonance, we obtain exact solutions in the weak pumping regime showing that IpNS=4IpN, which should be compared with the result of conductance GNS=2GN. Numerical results are also provided for the strong pumping regime showing interesting Andreev assisted pumping behavior. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Tunnel-regenerated multiple-active-region (TRMAR) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with high quantum efficiency and high brightness have been proposed and fabricated. We have proved experimentally that the efficiency of the electrical luminescence and the on-axis luminous intensity of such TRMAR LEDs scaled linearly approximately with the number of the active regions. The on-axis luminous intensity of such TRMAR LEDs with only 3 μm GaP current spreading layer have exceeded 5 cd at 20 mA dc operation under 15° package. The high-quantum-efficiency and high-brightness LEDs under the low injection level were realized. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The standard method to study the diffusion of a particle in a system with immobile obstacles is to use Monte Carlo simulations on finite-size lattices with periodic boundary conditions. For example, the diffusion of proteins on the surface of biomembranes in the presence of fractal and random aggregates of obstacles has been studied extensively by M. J. Saxton. In this article, we derive two algebraically exact methods to calculate the diffusion coefficient D for such systems. The first method reduces the problem to that of a first passage problem. The second one uses the Nernst–Einstein relation to transform the problem into a field-driven drift problem where D is related to the zero-field mobility. Systems with closed volumes and multiple independent pathways are discussed. In the second part [Mercier and Slater, J. Chem. Phys. 110, 6057 (1999), following paper], a numerical implementation will be described and tested, and several examples of applications will be given. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have investigated the relaxational dynamics for a protein model at various temperatures. Theoretical analysis of this model in conjunction with numerical simulations suggests several relaxation regimes, including a single exponential, a power law, and a logarithmic time dependence. Even though a stretched exponential form gives a good fit to the simulation results in the crossover regime between a single exponential and a power-law decay, we have not been able to directly deduce this form from the theoretical analysis. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Description: This study explored the relative roles of climate and phylogenetic background in driving morphometric trait variation in 10 spruce taxa in China. The study further addressed the hypothesis that these variations are consistent with species turnover on climatic gradients. Nine morphometric traits of leaves, seed cones, and seeds for the 10 studied spruce taxa were measured at 504 sites. These data were analyzed in combination with species DNA sequences from NCBI GenBank. We detected the effects of phylogeny and climate through trait-variation-based K statistics and phylogenetic eigenvector regression (PVR) analyses. Multivariate analyses were performed to detect trait variation along climatic gradients with species replacement. The estimated K -values for the nine studied morphometric traits ranged from 0.19 to 0.68, and the studied environmental variables explained 39–83% of the total trait variation. Trait variation tended to be determined largely by a temperature gradient varying from wet-cool climates to dry-warm summers and, additionally, by a moisture gradient. As the climate became wetter and cooler, spruce species tended to be replaced by other spruces with smaller needle leaves and seeds but larger cones and seed scales. A regression analysis showed that spruce species tended to be successively replaced by other species, along the gradient, although the trends observed within species were not necessarily consistent with the overall trend. The climatically driven replacement of the spruces in question could be well indicated by the between-species variation in morphometric traits that carry lower phylogenetic signal. Between-species variation in these traits is driven primarily by climatic factors. These species demonstrate a narrower ecological amplitude in temperature but wider ranges on the moisture gradient. Previous studies have characterized the overall influence of climate on spruce distribution and trait variation. However, most of the previous studies of these topics in spruce have focused on one or a few species, and little is known about the relationship between trait variation and species turnover for a wide array of spruce species at large scales, and even less has been clarified about relative roles of climate and phylogenetic background in driving morphometric trait variation. Using data from field surveys in the spruce forests across China, we showed that the climatically driven replacement of the spruces in question could be well indicated by the between-species variation in morphometric traits that carry weak phylogenetic signals but strong climatic signals and demonstrate a narrower temperature amplitude but wider ranges on the moisture gradient.

    Description: This paper presents the results of a data based comparative study of several hundred catchments across continental United States belonging to the MOPEX dataset to systematically explore the connection between the flood frequency curve and mean annual water balance. Mean annual water balance is expressed in terms of two similarity measures: (i) the climatic aridity index, AI , which is a measure of the competition between energy and water availability; and (ii) the baseflow index, BFI , which is a measure of total runoff partitioning into surface and subsurface components at the annual time scale. The data analyses showed that the aridity index, AI , has a first order control on the shape of the flood frequency curve (also known as the growth curve), as expressed in terms of both the mean and coefficient of variation ( C v ) of the annual maximum floods, once normalized by catchment size (i.e., specific flood discharge) While the mean annual (specific) flood discharge decreases with increasing aridity, C v increases with increasing aridity. On the other hand, the BFI was found to be a second order control on the flood frequency curve. Higher BFI , meaning higher contributions of subsurface flow to total streamflow, leads to a decrease of the mean annual (specific) flood discharge, and vice versa. The statistically significant relationship between AI and the flood frequency curve and the consistent shift of the growth curves with AI support the use of AI as a similarity measure for regionalization of flood frequency.

    Description: We demonstrate the development of a double quantum dot with an integrated charge sensor fabricated in undoped GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures using a double top-gated design. Based on the evaluation of the integrated charge sensor, the double quantum dot can be tuned to a few-electron region. Additionally, the inter-dot coupling of the double quantum dot can be tuned to a large extent according to the voltage on the middle gate. The quantum dot is shown to be tunable from a single dot to a well-isolated double dot. To assess the stability of such design, the potential fluctuation induced by 1/ f noise was measured. Based on the findings herein, the quantum dot design developed in the undoped GaAs/AlGaAs semiconductor shows potential for the future exploitation of nano-devices.

    Description: We measured the radio-frequency reflection spectrum of an on-chip reflection line resonator coupled to a graphene double quantum dot (DQD), which was etched almost isolated from the reservoir and reached the low tunnel rate region. The charge stability diagram of DQD was investigated via dispersive phase and magnitude shift of the resonator with a high quality factor. Its complex admittance and low tunnel rate to the reservoir was also determined from the reflected signal of the on-chip resonator. Our method may provide a non-invasive and sensitive way of charge state readout in isolated quantum dots.
