Notes: Zinc(II) complexes of N-pyridylcinnamides (H, m-OCH3, p-OCH3 and p-OH derivatives) were studied by spectrophotometric methods in aprotic media, and represent a chemical model inhibition by cinnamides of coniferyl alcohol dehydrogenase (CAD), a zinc enzyme involved in the lignification process. The complexation of N-pyridylcinnamide and m-methoxy-N-pyridylcinnamide with zinc ion is effected according to a 1 : 1 stoichiometry (ML), whereas a two-step equilibrium (M + L ⇌ ML \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ V_{\rm m} = 4 \cdot 45C_0 + 6 \cdot 44C_1 - 3 \cdot 33C_2 + 0 \cdot 46C_4 + 52 \cdot 9{\rm (}n = 300,r = 0 \cdot 999,s = 0 \cdot 81) $\end{document} ML2) is preferred with p-methoxy and p-hydroxy compounds. These ligands are mainly bonded through the carbonyl oxygen atom and the nitrogen of the pyridyl ring. Molar absorptivities for these complexes, not directly available, were calculated from analysis of the experiemental data. The UV complexation results are also supported by the stoichiometry of the complexes, which were synthesized and characterized.

Notes: The changes in harmonic vibrational frequencies and line intensities with respect to different strengths of an applied electric field are computed using analytically calculated energy derivatives. The ground states of several small molecules are studied at the ab initio restricted Hartree–Fock self-consistent-field (RHF SCF) level with a double ζ plus polarization basis set. The dependence of vibrational frequencies and line intensities upon the applied field strength is discussed.

Notes: Expressions are given for analytic determination of energy second derivatives of closed-shell restricted Hartree–Fock (RHF) wave functions under the effect of an external uniform electric field. In this way, harmonic vibrational frequencies can be computed. Application of the theoretical method to the methane molecule is presented, and comparison with the induced changes in vibrational bands of its experimental infrared spectrum is carried out.

Notes: A theoretical formalism and its implementation are described for the analytic evaluation of energy third derivatives for the paired-excited multiconfiguration self-consistent-field wave function. Cubic force constants and vibration–rotation interaction constants for H2O, CH2(3B1), CH2(1A1), HCN, and NH3 are reported for five different basis sets—from double zeta through triple zeta plus double polarization. These results are compared with those from single configuration SCF wave functions and with the available experimental data.

Notes: Using a serial bilayer model we show that heterogeneous ferroelectric systems may exhibit substantial Maxwell–Wagner piezoelectric relaxation. The relaxation has its origin in the coupling of the dielectric and piezoelectric properties. The model predicts both retardation (positive phase angle and counterclockwise charge–pressure hysteresis) and relaxation (negative phase angle and clockwise charge–pressure hysteresis) of the longitudinal direct piezoelectric coefficient. The theoretical results are confirmed experimentally in ferroelectric ceramic–ceramic bilayers and in a single-phase ferroelectric Aurivillius compound ceramic in which neighboring grains with strongly anisotropic properties may behave as basic Maxwell–Wagner units. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Microstructure, structural defects, and piezoelectric response of bismuth titanate (Bi4Ti3O12)1−x and bismuth titanium niobate (Bi3TiNbO9)x solid solution with x=0.05 and 0.2 were investigated. Depending on x and on the sintering temperature different microstructures and piezoelectric responses were observed. For a low content in Bi3TiNbO9 (x=0.05) and a high sintering temperature (1130 °C), a coarse grain size is present, the number of structural defects within the grain is small, and there is a strong dependence of d33 on the ac pressure. For higher Bi3TiNbO9 (x=0.2) content or for lower sintering temperature (1080 °C) and x=0.05, the grain size is finer and a large number of structural defects is present within the grains. In particular, for x=0.2, high resolution transmission electron microscopy shows a high concentration of intergrowth defects which consist of Bi3TiNbO9 layers inserted in the Bi4Ti3O12 matrix in a more or less random way. In these samples, there is a very small dependence of d33 on the ac pressure and the piezoelectric hysteresis is likewise very small. The relation between microstructure and piezoelectric properties is discussed and it is shown that there is a good correlation between the dependence of the piezoelectric response on the ac pressure and the defect density. The piezoelectric response may be related to the structural defects present within the grain. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The magnetooptical technique was used to directly observe the magnetic flux penetration in single crystals of the La–Sr–Cu–O superconductor. The large size of the crystals (several millimeters along the three axes) allows for observations to be made along the different crystalline orientations. In a previous study, we reported on direct measurements of critical currents and the dependence of their anisotropy on the amount of Sr doping. When looking at the behavior of vortices which are parallel to the Cu–O planes, we observed that the roughness of the flux fronts was greatly magnified for the highly anisotropic samples. This suggested that the vortices were moving between the planes, as if they were in independent channels. In this communication, we report on observations made when an additional field component is applied along the c axis. Our experiments show that this additional component strongly suppresses the vortex penetration, drastically reducing the apparent anisotropy of the critical currents. We argue that this behavior is consistent with a picture in which the vortices easily move ("glide'') between the Cu–O planes, and only feel the pinning potential when they are tilted by the additional field component, and thus forced to "puncture'' the planes. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Thin films of YBa2Cu3O7−x were deposited on Si substrates at 600–700 °C by dc magnetron sputtering from a stoichiometric oxide target. Resistivity measurement results indicate that these films are superconducting with a zero resistance Tc as high as 76 K, without further high-temperature post-annealing treatments. These films give both core and valence-band x-ray photoemission, and x-ray diffraction spectra similar to those for superconducting films prepared with a high-temperature post-annealing step. No significant diffusion of Si from the substrate into the film was detected for the films deposited at 650 °C or lower, according to depth profiles obtained using secondary ion mass spectrometry.

Notes: We report on the temporal characteristics of a Q-switched and mode-locked Nd-doped yttrium-aluminum-perovskite laser. The emission at the 1.0795-μm line shows up a 16-ps coherence time and an overall 200-ps pulse duration. This last one can be reduced to 70 ps by adjusting the laser cavity length to an accuracy better than 1 μm.

Notes: A vibrating reed of a high-Tc superconductor with electrostatic excitation and sensoring may be used as a sensitive magnetometer. Its sensitivity can be increased (in our preliminary experiment, by a factor of 2.5) by placing the free tip of the reed between two flat superconductors, which may also serve as capacitance electrodes. This arrangement can be used to obtain the irreversible magnetization curve of the electrode material from the resonance frequency of the reed.
