    Notes: Magnetic transitions in UNiGa were found to cause pronounced anomalies in temperature and magnetic-field dependencies of the electrical resistivity. The resistivity values are drastically reduced by the field induced transition from an antiferromagnetic to a ferromagnetic phase. The giant magnetoresistance (as large as Δρ/ρ=−87% at T=1.2 K for i(parallel)c) observed in UNiGa is typical for materials characterized by a strong coupling of conduction electrons with highly correlated f electrons. The observed anisotropy of transport properties is closely connected with the strong uniaxial magnetic anisotropy of this compound.

    Notes: Kudzu (Pueraria lobata) is a noxious weed infesting some areas of the USA. Knowledge of its genetic variation in both native and invasive areas can lead to effective biological control measures. Inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) variations were studied in P. lobata and its four closely related congeneric species (P. edulis, P. montana, P. phaseoloides and P. thomsoni). ISSR results allowed a clear separation of these five species. For P. lobata, 108 plants from China and USA were analysed. The samples from the US were genetically closer to Chinese P. lobata populations than to other congeneric populations. High genetic differentiation was found for P. lobata, P. montana and P. thomsoni in Chinese samples. High genetic diversity and low population differentiation was found in P. lobata samples of the US. This supports the hypothesis of multiple introductions into the USA from different sources in Japan or China, followed by subsequent gene exchange and recombination.

    Notes: Chromolaena odorata is one of the world's worst tropical weeds, and it can be found in Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan and Yunnan provinces in China. Genetic variation of 27 C. odorata populations sampled from across its invasive range in China was investigated using inter-simple sequence repeats (ISSR) analysis. All populations exhibited low levels of genetic variation. On average, 2.35% of the ISSR loci were polymorphic, total genetic diversity (HT) was 0.0406 and Shannon's information index (Hsp) was 0.0623. High genetic identities (I) between populations (0.9687 ± 0.01204) indicated low genetic differentiation. A frequent founder effect was interpreted as the main cause of the genetic structure observed in C. odorata.

    Notes: Alternanthera philoxeroides (Mart.) Grisb is an invasive weed that is widespread in a variety of habitats around the world. It was introduced into China in the 1930s, and today occurs in 20 provinces. The level and pattern of genetic diversity of 193 individuals from 11 land-grown A. philoxeroides populations from South China were determined using 81 intersimple sequence repeat markers. Mean Nei's gene diversity (HE) was 0.0203 ± 0.008, and total diversity (HT) was 0.0286, indicating that genetic diversity in A. philoxeroides in South China is very low. There was a greater proportion of diversity within populations than among (GST =  0.292) populations. Gene flow (Nm) among populations was 0.607. These results are in accordance with the assumption that populations in South China are genetically depauperate because of the short introduction history and the partially clonal propagation of this weed.

    Notes: As one of the worst invasive weeds in the world, Mikania micrantha H. B. K. spread to southern China after 1910 but without any natural enemies. Since the 1980s it has started to spread and invade widely. The weed has caused significant damage to many ecosystems in Guangdong province in recent years. This paper reviews the research in China on this weed, including its description, history of introduction together with information from morphological and physiological studies. The distribution of this invasive plant in China has been mapped and is presented together with damage being caused and analyses of soil types infested. The measures taken by the Chinese government for prevention and elimination are also discussed. Chinese scientists are now looking for effective biocontrol options to deal with this deleterious plant. Several native insects, mites and fungi have been reported to be able to control the reproduction of this weed in China, but no natural control has been achieved. Cuscuta sp., a native autoecious vine has recently been shown to suppress the growth of M. micrantha. Three major causes for the massive spread of this weed in southern China are presented together with recommendations for future control activities.

    Description: Dewetting is a well-known degradation mechanism for thin films at elevated temperatures. It is driven by surface energy minimization and occurs while the film is solid. The dewetting process is characterized by the formation of holes, retracting edges, and the formation of thickened rims on retracting edges. In anisotropic single-crystal thin films, holes are initially faceted. It is often observed that the corners of the holes retract faster than the edges of the hole, leading to dendritic or star-shaped holes. This so-called “corner instability” is one of the defining morphological characteristics of the dewetting process, and an understanding of this instability may lead to new film patterning techniques. In this work, we present a study of the growth of natural and patterned initially square holes in single-crystal Ni thin films on MgO substrates. A characteristic structure near the corners of the holes was observed, and a model for the growth of faceted holes was developed based on these observations. Despite its simplicity, the model reproduces the observed phenomenology and is in quantitative agreement with experiments. The model reveals that the corner instability arises from a redistribution of mass to create a new hole perimeter, which can only be created at the corner. The consequence is that the corner reaches a steady-state constant retraction rate while mass accumulation at the rims causes their retraction rate to continuously decrease.

    Description: Linear polarization angle, θ , dependent measurements of the microwave radiation-induced oscillatory magnetoresistance, R xx , in high mobility GaAs/AlGaAs 2D electron devices have shown a θ dependence in the oscillatory amplitude along with magnetic field, frequency, and extrema-dependent phase shifts, θ 0 . Here, we suggest a microwave frequency dependence of θ 0 ( f ) using an analysis that averages over other smaller contributions, when those contributions are smaller than estimates of the experimental uncertainty.

    Description: We examine the role of the microwave power in the linear polarization angle dependence of the microwave radiation induced magnetoresistance oscillations observed in the high mobility GaAs/AlGaAs two dimensional electron system. The diagonal resistance R xx was measured at the fixed magnetic fields of the photo-excited oscillatory extrema of R xx as a function of both the microwave power, P , and the linear polarization angle, θ . Color contour plots of such measurements demonstrate the evolution of the lineshape of R xx versus θ with increasing microwave power. We report that the non-linear power dependence of the amplitude of the radiation-induced magnetoresistance oscillations distorts the cosine-square relation between R xx and θ at high power.
