    Description: Understanding and controlling growth of graphene on the carbon face (C-face) of SiC presents a significant challenge. In this work, we study the structural, vibrational, and dielectric function properties of graphene grown on the C-face of 4H-SiC by high-temperature sublimation in an argon atmosphere. The effect of growth temperature on the graphene number of layers and crystallite size is investigated and discussed in relation to graphene coverage and thickness homogeneity. An amorphous carbon layer at the interface between SiC and the graphene is identified, and its evolution with growth temperature is established. Atomic force microscopy, micro-Raman scattering spectroscopy, spectroscopic ellipsometry, and high-resolution cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy are combined to determine and correlate thickness, stacking order, dielectric function, and interface properties of graphene. The role of surface defects and growth temperature on the graphene growth mechanism and stacking is discussed, and a conclusion about the critical factors to achieve decoupled graphene layers is drawn.

    Notes: The effects of interspecific competition from roach on gonad development in O+ and 1+ perch were studied in a pond experiment by varying the roach density between treatments. The proportion of mature O+ males first increased and, thereafter, decreased with increasing roach density and increasing somatic weight. O f females were immature and all I+ males were mature. The proportion of mature 1+ females decreased with increasing roach density and decreasing somatic weight. The gonad weight of O+ and 1+ males as well as 1+ females decreased with increasing roach density and decreasing somatic weight. For 1+ males, which were individually marked, both start weight as well as somatic end weight were positively related to gonad weight. One possibleexplanation for the hump shaped relationship between the proportion of mature O+ males and somatic weight is that behavioural interactions between O+ and I+ males in the absence of roach affected maturing in O+ males. This study supports previous suggestions that annual variation in resource availability may give rise to variance in fecundity-body size relationships.

    Notes: Species biomass and size composition of fish faunas along a productivity gradient were studied in south Swedish lakes. Generally, with increasing productivity (measured as chlorophyll content), Salmoniformes were replaced by percids, which in turn were replaced by cyprinids, as suggested in previous studies. However, percids showed two peaks in biomass, one in medium productive lakes due to perch and one in highly productive lakes due to zander. Benthic piscivores were present in all lakes, whereas pelagic piscivores were absent in the least productive lakes. The proportion of piscivores in the total fish biomass showed a peak in medium productive lakes, largely reflecting the importance of piscivorous perch. The median size of the dominant cyprinids (roach) in the systems studied increased as the importance of piscivores increased, which was interpreted as a size refuge response to increased predation pressure. The same pattern was present for the dominant planktivore, vendace, in low productive systems. Although a predictable pattern of change in the fish fauna was found along the productivity gradient, other environmental factors such as structural complexity may be the ultimate cause of the observed succession pattern.

    Notes: Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of ribonuclease from buds of bird-cherry (Prunus padus L.) revealed four different bands (I–IV). The activity of band I, which probably corresponds to an in vivo free ribonuclease, increased from October to January — most rapidly between December, when 69% of the buds were dormant, and January when 43% were in the dormant state — but did not change from January to March, when growth was resumed. Bands II–IV may represent ribonucleases which are structure-bound in vivo. The activity of band II decreased from October to a minimum in January and then increased from January to March. The activities of bands III and IV were very low from October to February but were enhanced with acceleration of growth in March. The results may indicate that the separate ribonucleases have different functions.

    Description: The intention was to study recruitment of benthic macrofauna to an exposed shore. Two mesh-sizes (1.0 and 0.5 mm) were used. The additional abundance and biomass in the finer sieve show both temporal and spatial variations. Maximum values were found in the autumn and at the shallowest station (5 m). The reasons for this are discussed.

    Description: Grab samples were taken at seven stations (10-58 m) in the Hanö bay in July-August during the period 1970-78. A high percentage, 26 - 60 %, of surviving adults (females) were found. At stations shallower than 38 m increasing population densities of Oiastylis rathkei were found until 1975 after which they decreased again. The population increase was found to be positively correlated to high water temperature during the previous winter. At 43 m depth the population changes were numerically small. Variations in the oxygen regime in the Bornholm basin caused the population changes at 58 m depth.
