    Notes: The feasibility of superconducting strips as position-sensitive detectors for α particles was investigated. For this purpose films have been prepared of different materials and dimensions using standard evaporation and laser ablation in an UHV system. Films were patterned into strips and current-biased strips were irradiated with 5.5 MeV α particles. The energy deposited by the particle in the strip creates a normal-conducting region, which in turn causes a voltage drop. The time evolution of the voltage drop across the strip as a function of bath temperature and bias current has been investigated. Information about the site of the strip hit by the α particle was obtained from monitoring the propagating normal-conducting zones. A lateral position sensitivity of ±30 μm for a tantalum strip detector has been achieved. The propagation of normal-state zones in the strip cannot provide information on the energy of the particle. A model describing the time evolution of a normal-conducting zone in a current-biased superconducting strip was used to test and interpret the experimental results and allows one to estimate the thermal conductivity of the strip material and the heat transfer from the strip into the substrate. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The surface plasmon polariton-enhanced Raman spectra of size-selected C16, C18, and C20 clusters isolated in nitrogen matrices are presented along with the calculated vibrational frequencies for the ring and linear chain isomers. The Raman spectra, recorded at a range of excitation wavelengths from 457.9 to 670 nm, show strong resonance enhancement for the three clusters. The calculated vibrational frequencies for ring and linear chain isomers and the cage and bowl structures for C20 are compared to the experimental frequencies. Systematic shifts in the series of peaks in the 200 cm−1 region for C16, C18, and C20 suggest that the observed isomers have the same geometry, thereby ruling out the bowl and cage isomers for C20. The measured spectra appear to be most consistent with the linear chain isomer. This high-energy isomer may be produced during neutralization of the deposited cluster ions. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: This is the first of a series of papers on the application of Wertheim's multidensity formalism to study the connectivity and related properties of equilibrium polymerizable particles. We first consider in detail the case in which each monomer has two sites available for covalent bonding. We modify Wertheim's treatment to apply it to the case where the two sites on a monomer are indistinguishable, i.e., to homofunctional units. A study is presented of the connectedness behavior in these systems, including expressions for the weight-average molecular weight and cluster size. The application of these results to specific models is reported in subsequent parts of this series.

    Notes: We will present results from μ+SR investigations of the heavy-electron systems CeAl3, U2Zn17, UCu5, and UCd11. The latter three are known to order antiferromagnetically at low temperatures. The transition into the antiferromagnetic phase is clearly manifest in the μ+SR data, but also above the Néel temperatures some weak magnetism seems to persist as can be inferred from enhanced μ+ relaxation rates even in zero applied field. The involved effective moments are much reduced in comparison to the free-ion f moments, generally below 0.5 μB, and the magnetic order may be of the spin-glass or spin-density wave type. In nonmagnetic CeAl3 a spontaneous μ+ precession signal appears below 0.7 K in zero external field which implies the presence of even some coherent magnetic order of probably very short range in this system. These findings are consistent with other recent μ+SR and neutron scattering work, indicating that weak magnetic mechanisms seem to be a characteristic feature of heavy-electron systems.

    Notes: Further insight into processing-structure-property relationships have been carried out for existing and candidate carbon-based protective overcoats used in the magnetic recording industry. Specifically, 5 nm thick amorphous diamond-like carbon (a:C) and nitrogenated diamond-like carbon (a:CNx) overcoats were deposited by low deposition rate sputtering onto a thin film disk consisting of either CoCrPt/CrV/NiP/AlMg or CoCrPt/CrV/glass. The wear durability and frictional behavior of these hard disks were ascertained using a recently developed depth sensing reciprocating nanoscratch test. It was determined that the CN0.14/CoCrPt/CrV/glass disk exhibited the most wear resistance, least amount of plastic deformation, and lowest kinetic friction coefficient after the last wear event. Core level x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results of sputter cleaned overcoats indicated that nitrogen up to 14 at. % incorporated into the amorphous network resulted in these improvements near the overcoat/magnetic layer interface, since there was an increase in the number of N-sp3 C bonded sites in a predominantly N-sp2 C bonded matrix. However, nonsputter cleaned overcoats exhibited a more graphitic pyridine-like (nondoping configuration) structure near the surface as evidenced by the increase in C(Double Bond)N versus C–N bonds and the valence band XPS determined appearance of the 2p-π band near the Fermi level (EF). Therefore, XPS sputter cleaning revealed a gradient in the chemical nature of the overcoats through the thickness. In addition, micro-Raman spectroscopy established that a further increase of nitrogen (≥18 at. %) weakened the overcoat structure due to the formation of terminated sites in the amorphous carbon network, since nitrogen failed to connect the sp2 domains within the network. This, in conjunction with an increase in the intensity of the 2p-π band from the valence band XPS spectra and the increase in the G-band position and ID/IG ratio from the Raman spectra, confirmed the increase in the size and number of sp2 bonds in the CN0.18 overcoat. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A prototype low-frequency ac magnetometer with a sensitivity to circular magnetic induction of (9±5)×10−15 T/(square root of)Hz is described. Using this device we confirm Ampère's law at 1.24 K setting an upper limit for possible deviations expressed in terms of the photon mass: mγ≤(8.4±0.8)×10−48 kg.

    Notes: The compound YbBiPt exhibits an extremely large low-temperature C/T (γ∼8 J K−2 mol−1/Yb) which, if due solely to a renormalized effective mass, would make this material the heaviest correlated electron system known to date. In the Kondo model, the very large γ corresponds to a small characteristic energy scale that is expected to be pressure dependent. We have studied the effect of chemical pressure on YbBiPt single crystals by heat-capacity measurements on Y and Lu-doped samples. We have also made preliminary low-temperature measurements under hydrostatic pressure of the heat capacity (300 mK≤T≤2 K, up to 8 kbar) and resistance (30 mK≤T≤1 K, at 16 kbar).

    Notes: Magnetism and superconductivity appear to be intimately connected in the heavy electron (HE) superconductors. For example, it has been conjectured but not proven that the exchange of antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations are responsible for pairing in HE superconductors. In this paper we review recent results in U1−xThxBe13, where specific heat, lower critical field, and zero-field muon-spin-resonance (μSR) measurements reveal another second-order phase transition (below the superconducting transition) to a state which possesses small-moment magnetic correlations for 0.019≤x≤0.043. We present a new phase diagram for (U,Th)Be13 which indicates that the superconducting and magnetic order parameters are closely coupled. A discussion of the nature of the lower phase is presented, including the consideration of a possible magnetic (time-reversal-violating) superconducting state. When UBe13 is doped with B (UBe12.97B0.03) the Kondo temperature is decreased and the specific heat jump at the superconducting transition temperature is significantly enhanced. However, μSR measurements reveal no magnetic signature in UBe12.97B0.03, unlike the case for Th doping. The correlation between changes in the Kondo temperature and changes in the superconducting properties induced by B doping provide evidence for the importance of magnetic excitations in the superconducting pairing interaction in UBe13.

    Notes: Members of the RBiPt (R=Ce–Lu with the exceptions of Pm and Eu) series have been grown as single crystals. Magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistance have been measured on all members of the series, and specific heat measurements have been performed on representatives. The high temperature resistance uniformly changes from that of a small-gap semiconductor or semimetal seen in NdBiPt to that of a heavy-fermion metal seen in YbBiPt, which shows a linear coefficient of specific heat at low temperatures of 8 J/K2 mole. Further, the lighter rare earth members show an unusually sharp increase in their resistance associated with antiferromagnetic ordering at low temperatures.
