Notes: Abstract Despite similarities in their socio-economic environments and the provision of identical legal grounds for divorce, England & Wales is dominated by fault divorce decrees whereas no-fault divorce dominates in Scotland. Indeed, during the past fifteen years, the shares of fault and no-fault divorce have increasingly diverged across these two regions. The paper proposes an explanation for this remarkable contrast based on cost incentives generated by procedural and legal interventions within the respective legal systems. In particular, the introduction of the Simplified Procedure in Scotland and the reduction in the time bar to divorce in England & Wales are key causal factors.

Notes: Abstract Xenoliths in primitive olivine tholeiite lavas from Merelava Volcano, Vanuatu, include recrystallized wehrlites and harzburgites characterized by extremely fine grain size (0.02–2 mm) and equigranular textures. The harzburgites display mineral segregations, have highly variable ratios of ol: opx, minor clinopyroxene and accessory Cr-spinel, and are interpreted as the residues of high degrees of melting of upper mantle peridotite. Annealed Cr-spinel aggregates in harzburgite sample # 31564B enclose numerous small inclusions of sodic sanidine and minor plagioclase, attributed to infiltration of the harzburgite by a residual melt derived from an earlier period of island arc magmatism. The recrystallized wehrlites have high ol/cpx ratios and depleted REE patterns compatible with a cumulus origin. The refractory nature of the phases in both groups of recrystallized xenoliths compares closely with phases in ‘Alpine-type’ peridotites and primitive arc lavas, and is incompatible with compositions of abyssal peridotites. The recrystallized wehrlites give equilibration temperatures of 1070–1130° C and are interpreted as cumulates derived from an earlier period of Vanuatu Arc magmatism. The range of composition displayed by phases in the harzburgites is greater than phase variation in the wehrlites, and reflects a more complex thermal history. Textural, mineralogical, and geothermometric considerations indicate the harzburgites underwent cooling to 800°/900° C before being re-heated to 1000–1100° C by the current magmatic regime. A shallow crustal origin for these xenoliths is indicated by gravity data and tectonic considerations which strongly imply the presence of an ophiolite body beneath Merelava, representing the northward extension of the Pentecost Ophiolite. These interpretations are compatible with a published model for generation of the host basalts by partial melting at the crust/mantle boundary (ca. 17 km). Sr isotopic data show that the harzburgites are incompatible with residues of ocean-floor magmatism, or with residues of Merelava and Central Chain magmatism, but suggest an affinity with Vitiaz Arc magmatism of Eocene-lower Miocene age. Both groups of xenoliths were apparently entrained from wall rocks during ascent of the host magmas.

Notes: Abstract A knowledge of the ‘proteome,’ total protein output encoded by a genome, provides information on (1) if and when predicted gene products are translated, (2) the relative concentrations of gene products, and (3) the extent of posttranslational modification, none of which can be accurately predicted from the nucleic acid sequence alone. The current status of proteome analysis is reviewed with respect to some of the techniques employed, automation, relevance to genomic studies, mass spectrometry and bioinformatics, limitations, and recent improvements in resolution and sensitivity for the detection of protein expression in whole cells, tissues, or organisms. The concept of ‘proteomic contigs’ is introduced for the first time. Traditional approaches to genomic analysis call upon a number of strategies to produce contiguous DNA sequence information, while ‘proteomic contigs’ are derived from multiple molecular mass and isoelectric point windows in order to construct a picture of the total protein expression within living cells. In higher eukaryotes, the latter may require several dozen image subsets of protein spots to be stitched together using advanced image analysis. The utility of both experimental and theoretical peptide-mass fingerprinting (PMF) and associated bioinformatics is outlined. A previously unknown motif within the peptide sequence of Elongation Factor Tu from Thermus aquaticus was discovered using PMF. This motif was shown to possess potential significance in maintaining structural integrity of the entire molecule.

Notes: Summary Below-crown radial and height variations in maximum crushing strength parallel to grain, relative density and tracheid length of an immature, 55 year old, red pine were studied. All properties showed pronounced trends with radial age and increased from pith to bark. A radial age of 16 years was estimated as the ‘age’ from which mature stem wood is formed. All properties studied varied with height above ground. Strong correlations were observed among properties. The study tree exhibited noticeably lower average crushing strength than is reported in the literature for wood from mature red pines.

Notes: Abstract Moxalactam pharmacokinetics at steady state was examined in a group of 40 patients with presumed or proven abdominal sepsis. Mean steady-state serum concentrations ranged from 27.0 to 211.0 mcg/ml and correlated inversely with creatinine clearance (r=0.91, p〈0.0001). Terminal half-life ranged from 1.27 to 8.27 hr and reflected the varying renal function of the patients. Moxalactam total body clearance (CL)displayed excellent correlation with creatinine clearance as 92%(r 2×100)of the variance in clearance could be accounted for by renal function (p〈 0.0001). Pharmacokinetic parameters were estimated using noncompartmental analysis based on statistical moment theory. Noncompartmentally determined CLwas in agreement with CLdetermined by nonlinear least squares regression (r=0.99, p〈 0.0001).Moxalactam total body clearance is best predicted from creatinine clearance corrected for body surface area.

Notes: Abstract The pulmonary deposition and pharmacokinetics of human growth hormone (hGH), administered by aerosol and instillate, in formulations containing 99mTc-DTPA (for gamma scintigraphic imaging) have been studied in five male New Zealand White rabbits. Gamma scintigraphy indicated that the peripheral:central deposition tended to be greater for aerosol (1.54) than for instillate (0.8). Two gamma scintigraphic methods were used to quantify dose deposited by aerosol, which permitted bioavailabilities to be determined. The bioavailable fraction for aerosolized hGH (45%) was greater than for instilled hGH (16%). This was attributed to the differential effects of mucociliary clearance. Absorption rate limited pharmacokinetics prevailed for both hGH formulations with post-peak half-lives approximately 10-fold greater than the intravenous elimination half-life of 40 min. Apparent absorption rate constants resulting from instillation and aerosolization were equivalent (0.0012 min−1and 0.0020 min−1respectively), however lung-to-blood transfer rate constants for aerosol delivery (0.00071 min −l) were greater than for instillation (0.00018 min−1).

Notes: Summary Mitoxantrone (Novantrone®; dihydroxyanthracenedione) is a substituted anthraquinone with a spectrum of activity similar to doxorubicin in experimental tumors. One hundred and seventy three patients with advanced breast cancer and no prior cytotoxic therapy for advanced disease entered a phase II study of mitoxantrone, 14 mg/m2 i.v. repeated every 3 weeks. At the time of this analysis 116 patients were evaluable. Eight patients achieved a complete response and 27 a partial response, the overall response rate being 30% (95% confidence limits: 22–39%). The median time until response was recorded was 15 weeks. The median duration of response was 74+ weeks and the median time to progression or death for all 116 patients was 22+ weeks. Mitoxantrone was well tolerated with myelosuppression as the dose-limiting toxicity. The most frequent non-haematological toxicities were nausea and vomiting (65%) but they were rarely severe. Total alopecia occurred in only 6% of the patients. Four patients developed clinically significant evidence of cardiotoxicity after cumulative mitoxantrone doses of 174–256 mg/m2. Thus, mitoxantrone offers comparable efficacy and less acute toxicity than the most active single agents currently available in the treatment of advanced breast cancer.
