Notes: Abstract A brief review of recent research and development works of some advanced Ti alloys and Ni base superalloys in the Institute of Aeronautical Materials, Beijing (BIAM) is reported. In which, the tensile deformation and fracture characteristics in an α-β Ti alloy, the creep behavior of Ti3Al intermetallic alloy and effect of heat treatment and crystal orientation on the creep properties of a single crystal Ni base alloys DD3, are presented. The applications of the above mentioned alloys in aeronautic industry are described.

Notes: Abstract The paper presents a brief review of some of the major research activities on fatigue and fracture mechanics in recent years at the Beijing Institute of Aeronautical Materials. Attention is mainly given to the studies on weight function methods for analyses of two- and three-dimensional crack problems, fatigue crack growth under variable amplitude loading, small crack effects and a fracture-mechanics-based total fatigue life prediction method.

Notes: Abstract The structure, space groups, lattice parameters and stoichiometric formula for the strengthening phase in Al−Fe−Mo−Si−Zr−Ti alloys were determined by X-ray diffraction, TEM, CBED and EDX. The coarsening behavior and mechanism of the strengthening phase were studied also using TEM and EDX. Results showed that the strengthening phase was identified to be BCC Al12(Fe, Mo, Zr, Ti)3Si (Im3,a=1.263 nm) and the coarsening rates is the lowest in all the intermetallic phases of Al−Fe system, which is controlled by the diffusion of alloy element Zr in the matrix. Addition of Gd, Y make a volumetric coarsening rate one order of magnitude slower, at 477°C approaching to the coarsening rate LI2 Al3(Zr, V) phase.

Notes: Abstract The anharmonic potential felt by a single-species ions confined in a rf quadrupole trap which results from a non-ideal trap configuration and the charge distribution of the ion cloud is studied. The rf resonance-absorption spectra are explained by a Duffing oscillator and a representation of the line-shape parameter η is derived. Forη 〉 0.77, the electric signals will exhibit hysteresis. The relation with the anharmonic potential is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Wire breaking is a serious problem in the application of wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM). A WEDM sparking frequency monitoring and control system based on the characteristics of the voltage waveform of WEDM is developed. Two types of wire breaking phenomena are categorised according to the duration of the symptoms: a sudden rise of sparking frequency, and a sluggish rise of sparking frequency. Based on these results, a new self-learning fuzzy controller (SLFC) is proposed. The pulse off-time is regulated in real-time to keep the sparking frequency at a safe level so that wire breaking can be prevented. Experimental results show that this monitoring and control system can control the sparking frequency at an optimal high metal removal rate level without the risk of wire rupture.

Notes: Abstract For the first time, an element abundance table of China Shelf Sea sediments is published based on 286 samples from the continental shelf of China analyzed for 62 chemical elements. The shelf sediments result from the redistribution of sediments from China over the continental shelf. On the basis of comparison of element abundances among the China shelf samples, hemipelagic Okinawa Trough samples, and pelagic brown clay from the West Pacific, it is clear that each has its own elemental characteristics. Hg anomaly enrichment in Okinawa Trough sediments may be used as an indicator of hydrothermal activity.

Notes: Abstract In Pb(B x ′B1−x ″)O3 ceramic compositions, it is customary to find a mixture of cubic pyrochlore and perovskite phases after calcination. Based on X-ray diffraction analysis, we concluded that both phases are made up of the same structural unit of BO6 octahedra. The B′ and B″ ions occupy the B sites randomly to the extent that local charge equilibrium is maintained. Thus a general formula for the pyrochlore phase can be expressed as Pb(B x ′B1−x )O3 · Op where O ⩽p ⩽ 0.5. An extensive study of the Pb(Zn x Nb1−x )O3.5−1.5x pyrochlore system was made by varying the zinc concentration. We interpret changes in the X-ray diffraction pattern and the lattice constant as indicative of the changing occupancy of the seventh oxygen sites in order to maintain local charge balance. The best combination of the dielectric properties, with a dielectric constant of130 and a σ factor greater than 1000 at10 MHz, is achieved at a composition of 0.3 ⩽x ⩽ 0.4 and a sintering temperature of 980° C. The temperature coefficient of the dielectric constant measures −0.75 × 10−3° C−1. It decreases to −0.54 × 10−3° C−1 when5 mol% of PbTiO3 was mixed with the nominal pyrochlore compositions and sintered. Thus, it may be possible to effect a larger change in the temperature coefficient by judiciously including selective amounts of a second phase which has the best compensating temperature coefficient.

Notes: Abstract In the Ti-rich region of the SrO-TiO2 system, a temperature-composition range is found to exhibit limited solubility of strontium, the maximum limit being 0.5 mol % Sr. It is also found that a two-phase region exists between this solubility limit and SrTiO3, in agreement with existing phase diagrams. When the strontium concentration is small (⩽ 0.5 mol %), strontium segregates to the grain boundaries to form a second phase of SrTiO3 below the solubility limit. Above 1200
