Notes: Abstract The crystal structure of N-(4-nitrophenyl)-N-phenylsulfonamide (C18H14N2O4S), a derivative of sulfonamide, has been determined by X-ray diffraction method using CuKα radiation. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space groupP21/n, witha=24.463(1),b=5.745(2),c=11.428(3)Å andβ=94.39(2)°. The structure was solved by direct methods and refined by full-matrix least squares to a finalR value of 0.045 with 3032 unique reflections. The dihedral angle between the substituents phenyl ring B and the phenyl A is 94.7(3)°. The S atom is in the usual distorted tetrahedral configuration.

Notes: Abstract The crystal structure of C6H16N8O2·CuCl2, a biguanide metal complex, has been determined by X-ray diffraction data using MoKα radiation. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space groupP21/a, witha=11.074(4),b=12.061(4),c=5.312(3)Å andβ=102.8(1)°. The structure was solved by direct methods and refined by full-matrix least-squares to a finalR value 0.037 with 1245 unique reflections. The complex molecule is centrosymmetric, with the Cu atom (0.5,0.5,0.5) on a crystallographic center of symmetry. The complex molecule is rhombic planar with a trans configuration.

Notes: Abstract The structure of di(2-Methylbenzotriazole) sulphate, (C7N3H9)2SO4, has been solved by X-ray diffraction methods. The compound crystallises in triclinic space group P $$\bar 1$$ witha=6.986(1),b=18.914(1),c=6.990(1) Å, α=95.083 (1), β=115.56 (1) and γ=84.93(1)o, respectively.M r=362.36,F(000)=380,Z=2,D m=1.45 mg m−3, finalR=0.060,R w=0.064. The structure was solved by direct methods (SHELXS86) and refined by least-squares methods. Dimers of planar 2-Methylbenzotriazole (MBT) molecules form stacks, one along thea-axis and the other parallel to thec-axis. The SO 4 −2 ions are confined by the two sets of stacks and are responsible for holding them together. The structure is mainly stabilized by the stacking forces. The average interplanar distances in any stack are 3.281 Å, within a dimer, and 3.361 Å, between the dimers.

Notes: Abstract The equation for radiative transfer in the case of resonance radiation for isotropic scattering has been solved by the method of the Laplace transformation and linear singular operators. The solution for emergent intensities have come out in terms ofX- andY-functions.

Notes: Abstract A time-dependent nonconservative radiative transfer equation in a finite media has been solved. Firstly, the time-dependent function is converted into a time-independent function by the use of a Laplace transform and the transformed equation is then solved by a method using linear operator theory.

Notes: Abstract  Measurements of two-components of velocity in the wake of a square cylinder using a hot-wire anemometer are reported. Two Reynolds numbers, namely 8700 and 17,625, have been considered. The measurements were carried out in a low-speed, low-turbulence wind tunnel. Benchmark experiments at much lower Reynolds numbers show good agreement between the present experiments and published results. At higher Reynolds numbers, the experimental data reveal anticipated trends in terms of wake recovery and turbulence decay. Both velocity and velocity fluctuations show symmetry about the wake axis. The experimental data have been compared with the large eddy simulation (LES) calculation reported by Wang et al. [University of Illinois at Urbana – Champaign (1996) Report CFD 96-03] and LDV measurements of Lyn et al. [J Fluid Mech (1995) 304: 285–319]. The agreement among the three sets is generally acceptable in terms of the time-averaged velocity components, but not the velocity fluctuations. The turbulence fluctuations in the present experiments are seen to be lower than in the referred work. The differences have been traced to factors such as the aspect ratio, blockage ratio and upstream turbulence. Experiments with increased upstream turbulence did show a reduction in the discrepancy between the present experiments and the published data. An assessment of the experimental data in terms of physical mechanisms revealed that (a) streamwise normal stresses were correlated with the vortex centers, and (b) the turbulence kinetic energy profiles are similar to the turbulence shear stress. Spectral analysis of the velocity signals was carried out in the present work. Energy transfer from the mean flow to the streamwise velocity fluctuation was confirmed in the near wake. A redistribution of the kinetic energy between the streamwise and transverse components of velocity over a longer distance downstream was subsequently observed.

Notes: Summary We report on the regeneration of fertile Indica rice (Oryza sativa L.) plants from protoplasts isolated from scutellar tissue of immature embryos. The average yields of protoplasts after purification ranged from 2.8 × 105 to 3.5 × 105 protoplasts per fifty embryos. Protoplasts developed rapidly to colonies when cultured in maltose containing medium using the nurse culture method. Upto 146 or 39 visible colonies per 106 protoplasts were obtained for the varieties Basmati 370 and IR43 respectively. Of two basal culture media compared, R2 medium containing 3 mg l−1 kinetin, 1 mg l−1 naphthalene acetic acid (NAA), 30 g l−1 maltose and 3.0 g l−1 agarose was found to be more effective in producing green plants. All scutellum protoplast-derived plants that were transferred to the greenhouse survived and were fertile.

Notes: Abstract Theoretical studies have been carried out to investigate the convective heat transfer coefficients at different locations in the entrance region of a cylindrical duct with combined axial and tangential entry of time-independent power-law fluids. Investigations have been performed with uniform heat flux and uniform wall temperature boundary conditions. Theoretical model uses integral approach of hydrodynamic and thermal boundary layer theory to establish a functional relationship of local Nusselt number (Nu z ) with the pertinent input parameters such as generalised Reynolds number based on tangential velocity of injection $$\left( {Re_{G_i } } \right)$$ , generalised Prandtl number based on inlet tangential velocity (Pr G ), the ratio of axial-to-tangential velocity at the inlet to the duct (V R), the flow behaviour index of the fluid (n) and the ratio of axial-distance-to-duct-diameter (z/D).
