Notes: Summary The non-linear interaction between large-scale Rossby waves is considered making use of a spectral model of a barotropic atmosphere in spherical geometry. It is found that, if an arbitrary number of zonal components is taken into account it is possible to predict the non-linear energy and enstrophy flux between Rossby waves whose interaction cannot be predicted by single triadic resonance. It is shown, referring to the results of a paper by Baines, that such kind of, zonally mediated, non-linear energy flux is capable of explaining some relevant features of numerical integrations of truncated models with a large number of components and, could, as a consequence be responsible of some features of the large-scale circulation.

Notes: Abstract Some applications of surface organometallic chemistry on metals to catalysis are presented, showing the great importance of the modification of a metallic surface by organometallic compounds on its catalytic properties. The selective hydrogenation of α–β unsaturated aldehydes such as citral (Z and E) can be achieved on rhodium–tin catalysts. While rhodium alone is relatively unselective, geraniol (and nerol) can be obtained selectively (〉 98%) without a significant loss of activity by use of a rhodium–tin catalyst showing a typical ligand effect of the organotin fragment on the surface. Similarly, in the isomerization of (+) 3-carene into (+) 2-carene or the dehydrogenation of butan–2–ol into methyl ethyl ketone, the selectivity into the desired product is increased by introduction of small amounts of tin which will form adatoms poisoning unselective sites. An alloying effect of tin is also presented in the dehydrogenation reaction of isobutane in isobutene.

Notes: Abstract: The aim of this work is to study the porosity of three-dimensional and two-dimensional packing of stiff cylindrical fibres according to their aspect ratio. First, we have carried out an experimental study of the porosity for 3D and 2D packing. In this last case, the elementary representative surfaces have been determined. Then, an attempt of interpretation of the porosity variations for 2D stacks has been realized on the basis of the excluded volume theory and a variation law has been proposed. To conclude, we have studied the relevance of a simplified packing model based on a single geometry of the defects.

Notes: Abstract. Molecular nanomagnets, besides promising to open new frontiers in technology, have attracted huge interest in the scientific community because they can exhibit the phenomenon known as quantum tunnelling of the magnetization, i.e. coherent fluctuations of the direction of the total spin vector. In this paper we study a different quantum phenomenon involving fluctuations of the magnitude of the total spin vector. These fluctuations are related to the mixing between states with different spin quantum number, and imply new macroscopic effects, which we theoretically investigated in the Mn-[ $\mathsf{3\times3}$ grid.

Notes: Summary Beta-estradiol-3-benzoate provoked an initial centrifugal membrane shift in rat parathyroid cells and, later, enlargement of the compartments concerned with parathyroid hormone secretion, which suggests that estradiol modulates not only transport and release of parathyroid hormone but also the capacity for its synthesis, packaging and storage.

Notes: Abstract We have recently demonstrated, using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, that insulin receptor internalization in response to insulin incubation (down-regulation) in human erythrocytes is accompanied by a transient decrease in membrane order, as measured by the 2T′‖ order parameter. Since membrane lipids play such an important role in receptor internalization, we investigated the possible effects that an alteration of the normally-occurring lipid profile might have on down-regulation and the concomitant transient decrease in membrane order. Consequently, human erythrocytes enriched with cholesterol and erythrocytes from cirrhotic patients were examined, because both of these groups of cells have a higher cholesterol/phospholipid molar ratio (CH/PL) than controls. The 5-nitroxystearate spin label, which inserts into the lipid bilayer of cell membranes, was used to monitor changes in 2T′‖ for a 3-h period at 37°C. We report here that both cholesterol-enriched and cirrhotic erythrocytes do not down-regulate, as demonstrated by binding assays, and that they do not show the typical transient decrease in membrane order observed in controls. The results seem to indicate that a more ordered membrane inhibits internalization of the insulin receptor in erythrocytes, and that an increase in membrane disorder is necessary for insulin receptor down-regulation.

Notes: Summary A kinetic study was performed on leukemic blasts from patients with acute myeloid leukemia, separated into 2 subpopulations by a specific density gradient. The growth curve and the [3H]-thymidine uptake were simultaneously analyzed. While cumulative nucleotide uptake fitted with the growth kinetics in the low-density fraction, such a concordance was not found in the high-density subpopulation. That indicated the occurrence of simultaneous growth and loss in the high density fraction, which could not be evaluated by a simple numerical determination.

Notes: Abstract The paper refers to the solution of the integral equation for the acceleration (or pressure) potential for the study of subsonic linearized unsteady flow in view of aeroelastic applications. The case considered is relevant to a trapezoidal wing infinitely thin surface without discontinuities. As is well known [1, 2], the kernel of the integral equation exhibits three singularities, two of which are integrable in elementary form, whereas, for the third one integration in principal part according to Hadamard's rule is necessary. The kernel is therefore reworked in such a way that all the singularities are separated from the regular part, and eventually the discretization is performed in such a way that only the regular part is to be recalculated for each new value of the reduced frequency. Convergence tests, comparison with other methods of solution, and time saving associated with the technique of separation are also shown. Sommario.
