    Notes: A simple and efficient three-noded mixed harmonic axisymmetric element for shells of revolution under non-symmetric loading is developed. The present element considering shear strain is based on a modified mixed variational principle in which the independent unknowns are only the quantities prescribable at the shell edges. The non-symmetric variations of the displacements and stress resultants in the circumferential direction are decomposed in terms of Fourier series. The stress resultants are eliminated on the element level so that the standard stiffness equations are obtained. The importance of consistent stress parameters is addressed and the efficiency of the present consistent mixed element is shown. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: A 4-node hybrid stress quadrilateral shell element with 3 rotational d.o.f.s per node is presented. The mid-surface displacement of the element is founded on Allman's rotation. The equal-rotation mode intrinsic to the rotation is suppressed by a stabilization vector. The assumed stress field and the stabilization scalar is chosen such that membrane locking can be avoided. Computational efficiency of the element is improved by employing orthogonal stress modes and admissible matrix formulation. Popular benchmark tests are attempted and the results are found to be satisfactory. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: This paper presents a general direct integral formulation for potential flows. The singularities of Green's functions are desingularized theoretically, using a subtracting and adding back technique, so that Gaussian quadrature or any other numerical integration methods can be applied directly to evaluate all the integrals without any difficulty. When high-order quadrature formulas are applied globally, the number of unknowns can be reduced. Interpolation functions are not necessary for unknown variables in the present paper. Therefore, the present method is much simpler and more efficient than the conventional one. Several numerical examples are calculated and compared satisfactorily with analytical solutions or published results. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: The use of wavelet expansions in numerical solutions of electromagnetic frequency-domain integral equation formulations is steadily growing. In this paper we review the recently suggested impedance matrix compression (IMC) method for a more effective integration of wavelet-based transforms into existing numerical solvers. The difference between the IMC method and the previous approaches to applying wavelets in computational electromagnetics is twofold. Firstly, the transformation is effected by means of a digital filtering approach. This approach renders the transform algorithm adaptive and facilitates the derivation of a basis which best suits the problem at hand. Secondly, the conventional thresholding procedure applied to the impedance matrix is substituted for by a compression process in which only the significant terms in the expansion of the (yet-unknown) current are retained and hence a substantially smaller number of coefficients has to be determined. A few numerical results are included to demonstrate the advantages of the presented method over the currently used ones. The feasibility of ensuring a slow growth in the number of unknowns even when there is a rapid increase in the problem complexity is shown by an illustrative example. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: A new method, namely the normal stiffness matrix along contact line (NSMACL) method, for analysing gears, is proposed. The new method uses the static coagulation technique to coagulate the global stiffness matrix of all contact teeth into a lower-order NSMACL. By adding the concert deformation condition and equilibrate condition, the relation between the torque acting on the driving gear and the load along the contact lines can be established, and the contact stress and gear tooth deformation can also be obtained. Three-dimensional (3D) highly accurate solid models of gear teeth have been established, in which the contact range and the whole finite element model can be automatically adjusted with the change of meshing process. Spur and helical bevel gears can be analysed using these models. Example models and results are presented. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: The hypersingular integral equation approach is suggested to solve the plane elasticity crack problem with circular boundary. The complex variable function method is used in the formulation. In the equation the crack opening displacement function is used as the unknown function, and the traction on the crack face as the right-hand term. A numerical integration rule is used to evaluate the hypersingular integral. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the use of the approach. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: The arc-length method has been widely used in non-linear analysis of structures. While it can handle complex load-deflection paths effectively, the analyst has no control over the load incrementation scheme to achieve convergence to specific locations along the load-deflection path. There are a number of situations in which such control is necessary, for example when convergence to predefined load levels, displacement levels or stress levels is required. This paper describes an improved arc-length method in which this deficiency is overcome. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
