    Notes: A new synthetic elastomer has been obtained based on an ethylene-propylene copolymer prepared using an organometallic catalyst system. Reactive sites (phosphonyl dichloride groups) are placed on the copolymer chain by treating the polymer with phosphorus trichloride and oxygen. After hydrolysis or alcoholysis of the phosphonyl dichloride groups to phosphonic acid or phosphonic acid esters, vulcanization may be carried out by reaction with metallic oxides, particularly lead oxide. Vulcanizates of the polyolefin elastomer have outstanding resistance to heat, ozone, and oxygen, and have excellent electrical properties. This combination suggests the use of this material in high temperature electrical applications.

    Notes: The O-glycosidically linked Oligosaccharides on the pseudorabies virus (PRV) glycoprotein gp50 synthesized by three different cell lines were studied. The intact membrane protein (gp50) was expressed in Vero cells and in the insect cell line Sf9. In addition, a truncated, secreted form lacking the transmembrane and cytoplasmic domains (gp50T), was expressed in CHO and Sf9 cells. The protein, both in intact and truncated form, synthesized by the two mammalian cells contained only the disaccharide Galβ1-3GalNAc, either unsubstituted or substituted with one or tow sialic acid residues. By contrast, the major O-linked structure on gp50 and gp50T synthesized by Sf9 cells was the monosaccharide GalNAc. The Sf9 cells also linked lower amounts of Galβ1-3GalNAc to gp50 (12%) and gp50T (26%). None of the structures synthesized by Sf9 cells contained sialic acid. Measurements of the two relevant glycosyltransferases revealed that while all three cell lines contain comparable levels of the UDP-GalNAc:polypeptide, N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferase activity, there is a greater variation in the levels of UDP-Gal: N-acetylgalactosamine, β1-3 galactosyltransferase, with the Sf9 cells containing the lowest level.

    Notes: An approach to high-density, high-modulus binders for explosives is to blend low-density, high-modulus polymers with high-density, low-modulus polymers. Improved properties, which these pairs theoretically should have, are discussed. Two attempts to achieve miscibility between a high-density fluoropolymer (Kel-F 800) and high-modulus thermoplastics (Lucite 130 and Phenoxy PKHJ) were unsuccessful. These blends are immiscible and their physical properties are additive or only slightly enhanced. Anelastic properties of the blends indicate phase separation by the presence of two glass transitions, one associated with each phase.

    Notes: High molecular weight polyimide resins have been prepared by the reaction of diisocyanates and a mixture of dianhydrides and their acids in the presence of a tertiary amine catalyst. The polyimides thus formed can be made into tough flexible films similar to those polyimides prepared by the conventional method of reacting a dianhydride with a diamine. The preparation of high molecular weight polymer is affected by the purity of reagents, the anhydride-acid ratio, temperature, and moisture. Evidence from model compound studies is presented regarding the nature of the reaction mechanism.

    Notes: High molecular weight polyimide polymers have been prepared by the reaction of dissocyanates and a mixture of dianhydrides and their dialkyl esters in aprotic solvents. No catalyst is necessary, but high polymer formation is affected by the anhydride/ester ratio and temperature. Dianhydrides such as PMDA, BTDA, TMA, and their esters have been used successfully. Mixtures of these materials have also been used. Tough, flexible films can be obtained from these polymers.

    Notes: In the study of interactions of blood with artificial surfaces, it is common practice to wet these surfaces with a saline solution before exposing them to blood. The effect of this procedure on subsequent adhesion of blood platelets has been investigated both theoretically and experimentally, with a spinning disc apparatus. A large part of the observed delay in the initiation of platelet adhesion when using this apparatus is attributed to the time involved in displacing the prewetting fluid and bringing platelets near the surface. This observation is relevant to speculations of other researchers about the time course of adhesion-related reactions at the surface-proper. Other theoretical solutions are developed for the transient Leveque problem, which relates to a uniform shear-flow near a surface, and for a stagnation point apparatus. These solutions are compared with delay effects noticed in experimental data published by others.

    Notes: Comparison of metastable peaks in the mass spectra of the monoterpenes alloöcimene and a-pyronene shows that they fragment through common ions. It is concluded that the acyclic triene (alloöcimene) undergoes electrocyclic ring closure to the cyclic diene (a-pyronene) and fragmentation then proceeds from an ionised form of a cyclic diene. The fragmentation proceeds to a series of ions [CnH2n-5]+, the decomposing forms of which are inferred to be protonated benzene (n = 6) and dihydrotropylium ions (n = 7, 8, 9). These ions react via loss of H2, the dihydrotropylium → tropylium conversion being characterised by a relatively large kinetic energy release in both un-substituted (n = 7) and methyl-substituted (n = 8, 9) cases.

    Notes: The direct current conductivity of three different forms of polyethylene terephthalate was studied over a wide temperature and voltage range to determine the structural dependence of the conduction process. From the films in the amorphous, crystallized, and oriented and crystallized forms it was determined that crystallization reduces the conductivity by more than one order of magnitude. Orientation results in a sixfold decrease in conductivity. The conductivity does not change over a wide range of molecular weight or carboxyl end group concentration. As shown from model polymers and copolymers, disruption of chain symmetry and molecular packing, introduction of side chains, or any other modification which reduces the crystallinity and order, results in greater conductivity. The structural dependence of conductivity, the temperature dependence, and the current-voltage relationships of polyethylene terephthalate are consistent with a proposed ionic mechanism for the conduction process.
