Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Ein Satz diskreter Datenwerte über dem Intervall [a, b], der eine Funktiong (x) repräsentiert, wird stückweise durch lokal definierte kubische Polynome interpoliert.
Notes: Abstract The interpolation of a discrete set of data, on the interval [a, b], representing the functiong(x) is obtained using a local piecewise polynomial of order 3. This piecewise cubic interpolant has the following properties: monotonicity and/or convexity or turning points that are present in the data are preserved and no extraneous turning points are created. This approximation method is also presented in the form of a FORTRAN77 subroutine.

Notes: Abstract This paper investigates the problem of predicting daily returns based on five Canadian exchange rates using artificial neural networks and EGARCH-M models. First, the statistical properties of five daily exchange rate series (US Dollar, German Mark, French Franc, Japanese Yen and British Pound) are analysed. EGARCH-M models on the Generalised Error Distribution (GED) are fitted to the return series, and serve as comparison standards, along with random walk models. Second, backpropagation networks (BPN) using lagged returns as inputs are trained and tested. Estimated volatilities from the EGARCH-M models are used also as inputs to see if performance is affected. The question of spillovers in interrelated markets is investigated with networks of multiple inputs and outputs. In addition, Elman-type recurrent networks are also trained and tested. Comparison of the various methods suggests that, despite their simplicity, neural networks are similar to the EGARCH-M class of nonlinear models, but superior to random walk models, in terms of insample fit and out-of-sample prediction performance.

Notes: Abstract Relative Difference Sets with the parameters (2a, 2b, 2a, 2a-b) have been constructed many ways (see davis, EB, jung, maschmidt, and pottsurvey for examples). This paper modifies an example found in arasusehgal to construct a family of relative difference sets in 2-groups that gives examples for b = 2 and b = 3 that have a lower rank than previous examples. The Simplex code is used in the construction.

Notes: Abstract Relative Difference Sets with the parameters k = nλ have been constructed many ways (see (Davis, forthcoming; Elliot and Butson 1966; and Jungnickel 1982)). This paper proves a result on building new RDS by taking products of others (much like (Dillon 1985)), and this is applied to several new examples (primarily involving (p i, p j, p i, p i−j)).
