Notizen: This note describes improvements to the Suhara-Fukuda method for generating a triangular finite element network. These are based on the use of a node generation procedure which distributes nodes is a regular pattern across the network area and is sufficiently flexible to permit any variation in element density. Because of the regular node distribution, poorly shaped elements will not arise and so the procedure for connecting the nodes to form elements can be simplified. Examples of networks generaed in this way are given.

Notizen: The paper presents a finite element method for minimum weight design of structures with lower-bound constraints on the natural frequencies, and upper and lower bounds on the design variables. The design algorithm is essentially an iterative solution of the Kuhn-Tucker optimatility criterion. The three most important features of the algorithm are: (i) a-small number of design iterations are needed to reach optimal or near-optimal design, (ii) structural elements with a wide variety of size-stiffness may be used. The only significant restriction is the exclusion of curved beam and shell elements, (iii) the algorithm will for multiple as well as single frequency constraints. The design procedure is illustrated with three simple problems.

Notizen: It is shown that a singularity occurs in isoparametric finite elements if the mid-side nodes are moved sufficiently from their normal position. By choosing the mid-side node positions on standard isoparametric elements so that the singularity occurs exactly at the corner of an element it is possible to obtain quite accurate solutions to the problem of determining the stress intensity at the tip of a crack. The solutions compare favourably with those obtained using some types of special crack tip elements, but are not as accurate as those given by a crack tip element based on the hybrid principle. However, the hybrid elements are more difficult to use.

Notizen: The cell vertex method is generalized to three dimensions. It is proved that there exists a one-parameter family of eight-point three-dimensional methods with second-order truncation error on parallelepipeds. Using different triangulations of control volume faces, various finite volume methods are derived. Some of these are identified as members of the aforementioned one-parameter family and may be regarded as second-order upwind schemes. A Fourier analysis is used to investigate the spectral properties of these discretizations.Numerical experiments illustrate that second-order global accuracy is achieved on parallelepiped grids, as suggested by the theory. Randomly perturbed, stretched, sheared meshes are used to test these methods to destruction. It is found that upwinding improves both the accuracy on distorted meshes and the spectrum of the discretization.

Notizen: Based on the Euler-Maclaurin formula, a compact finite difference scheme is employed to solve a two-point boundary value problem for studying the secondary instabilities of the boundary layer flow. The parametric resonance of unstable waves is explored using the Floquet method. For both subharmonic and fundamental modes, two additional Fourier terms are added in the analysis, and the spatial growth rates are determined. The effect of suction mechanism on the secondary instability waves is also investigated. From numerical experiments, it is shown that the proposed numerical scheme is very promising. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: In this paper, an algorithm for obtaining solutions to the compressible Euler equations on mixed polyhedral grids is described. These grids, which are, in general, composed of hexahedral, pentahedral and tetrahedral elements, are used in the modelling of aerodynamic flows over complex three-dimensional geometries. The hexahedra are grouped into regular blocks, while the other elements are part of irregular grid regions, giving rise to the term “hybrid grid approach”. The interconnection of the grid elements is defined by an efficient data structure, which supplies the required information to drive the Euler algorithm. In fact, cell-vertex and cell-centre spatial discretization variants of this algorithm are detailed, along with an explicit time-marching scheme for obtaining steady-state solutions. Results on two geometrically simple configurations provide an evaluation of these solution techniques, whilst the focus on a third, complex configuration, demonstrates the potential of the method in addressing the flow over general aircraft geometries.

Notizen: The use of multigrid methods in complex fluid flow problems is recent and still under development. In this paper we present a multigrid method for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The distinctive features of the method are the use of a pressure-correction method as a smoother and a novel continuity-preserving manner of grid coarsening. The shear-driven cavity problem is used as a test case to demonstrate the efficiency of the method.

Notizen: A local mode Fourier analysis is used to assess the suitability of the SIMPLE pressure-correction algorithm to act as a smoother in a multigrid method. The necessary ellipticity of the Navier-Stokes equations and their discrete representation are established. The theoretical analysis is compared with practical results.

Notizen: In this paper, a segregated finite element scheme for the solution of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is proposed which is simpler in form than previously reported formulations. A pressure correction equation is derived from the momentum and continuity equations, and equal-order interpolation is used for both the velocity components and pressure. Algorithms such as this have been known to lead to checkerboard pressure oscillations; however, the pressure correction equation of this scheme should not produce these oscillations. The method is applied to several laminar flow situations, and details of the methods used to achieve converged solutions are given.
