Notes: Abstract This paper is concerned with double sequencesC={C n} n =−∞/∞ of Hermitian matrices with complex entriesC n ∈M s×s ) and formal Laurent seriesL 0(z)=−Σ k=1 ∞ C −k z k andL ∞(z)=Σ k=0 ∞ C k z −k . Making use of a Favard-type theorem for certain sequences of matrix Laurent polynomials which was obtained previously in [1] we can establish the relation between the matrix counterpart of the so-calledT-fractions and matrix orthogonal Laurent polynomials. The connection with two-point Padé approximants to the pair (L 0,L ∞) is also exhibited proving that such approximants are Hermitian too. Finally, error formulas are also given.

Notes: Summary The meiotic identification of nine pairs of chromosomes at metaphase I of meiosis of Triticum aestivum (B genome, 4A and 7A) has been achieved using a Giemsa C-banding technique. As a result, the analysis of the pairing of each chromosome arm in disomic and monosomic intervarietal hybrids between ‘Chinese Spring’ and the Spanish cultivar ‘Pané 247’ could be carried out. Differences in the chiasmata frequencies per chromosome arm cannot be explained on the basis of relative arm lengths only. Possible effects of arm-to-arm heterochromatic differences on meiotic pairing are discussed.

Notes: Summary The meiotic behaviour of the amphiploid Hordeum chilense X Triticum turgidum conv. durum using a C-banding staining method is studied. Nine pairs of chromosomes at metaphase-1 (4A, 7A and the seven of the B genome) were identified and the remaining wheat chromosomes (1A, 2A, 3A, 5A and 6A) and seven of the chilense (1 to 7 H ch chromosomes) were assigned to its particular genome. A similar mean number of univalents from parental genomes (wheat and wild barley) were found. No meiotic pairing between chilense and turgidum chromosomes was detected. Differences in the meiotic behaviour per chromosome and amongst genomes are explained on the basis of cytomorphological and heterochromatin characteristics.

Notes: Summary The C-banding pattern of nine meiotic chromosomes of common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) as described. In F1s of crosses between monosomics of ‘Chinese Spring’ and two Spanish wheat cultivars, univalent chromosomes were used to aid the recognition and analysis of the C-banding pattern for the individual chromosomes. The identification of one chromosome involved in one translocation in ‘Chinese Spring’ x ‘Pané 247’ has been made through heterochromatin bands observed in the chromosomes involved in multivalents.

Notes: Abstract In many applications it is of major interest to decide whether a given formal power series with matrix-valued coefficients of arbitrary dimensions results from a matrix-valued rational function. As the main result of this paper we provide an answer to this question in terms of Matrix Padé Approximants of the given power series. Furthermore, given a matrix rational function, the “smallest” degrees of the matrix polynomials which represent it are not necessarily unique. Therefore we study a certain minimality-type, that is, minimum degrees. We aim to obtain all the minimum degrees for the polynomials which represent the function as equivalents. In addition, given that the rational representation of the function for the same pair of degrees need not be unique, we have obtained conditions to study the uniqueness of said representation. All the results obtained are presented graphically in tables setting out the above information. They lead to a number of properties concerning special structures, staired blocks, in the Padé Table.

Notes: Summary Metaphase I chromosome association of the monosomic F1 and the backcross progenies made to develop a monosomic line in the Spanish common wheat Pané-247 was analyzed using a Giemsa C-banding technique. This permits the unequivocal identification of nine meiotic chromosomes (4A, 7A and the seven chromosomes of the B genome). The average frequencies of pairing per arm and of univalents for these nine pairs per arm and of univalents for these nine pairs indicate a difference between arms. The F1 showed asynapsis with univalents in 18.5 per cent of PMC's in intervarietal hybrids. This mainly involved chromosomes 4A, 1B and 6B which also have the largest amount of constitutive heterochromatin. The possible causes of reduced metaphase I association and its rapid decrease during backcrossing are discussed in relation to polymorphism between heterozygous homologous chromosomes.

Notes: Summary The meiotic pairing behaviour at metaphase I of a Triticum aestivum×Triticum monococcum hybrid has been studied by means of the C-banding technique to ascertain the homology between the chromosomes in the A genome of the two species. The technique allowed the A and B genome chromosomes and the 2D, 3D and 5D chromosomes to be identified. Differences in the level of chromosome pairing in the A genome were noted. The T. monococcum 4A chromosome did not pair with any of the T. aestivum chromosomes in any of the metaphase I cells analysed. Two reciprocal translocations between the 2B and 2D chromosomes on one side and the 2A and 3D on the other side have been identified. The usefulness of the C-banding technique in the study of chromosome homology among species related to wheat is discussed.

Notes: Abstract The aim of this paper is to apply an algorithm related to the rational approximation for the identification of the lag structure in a transfer-function model. In fact, we apply the ε-algorithm proposed by Berlinet [3–5] to determine the polynomial orders in univariate and multivariate ARMA models. Furthermore, it has been proposed by Berlinet [5], González and Cano [13, 14] and González et al. [15] for a transfer-function model with one input and multiple inputs, respectively. The main contribution in this paper concerns the study of the relative significance of the elements in the ε-algorithm table, in the same way as that given by Berlinet and Francq [7] for ARMA models, to confirm the pattern used to specify the model. Two examples will be considered, namely, the sales series M [8] and a simulated model [20]. A comparison is also made between the results of the ε-algorithm and the corner method generally used in the econometric literature. Although the ε-algorithm requires a more advanced theory in Numerical Analysis, it can be applied in a more simple way than the corner method.
