Description: Although 1D and 2D fast Fourier transforms (FFTs) have long been used for the filtering, interpretation, and modeling of potential-field data, 3D FFTs have not enjoyed similar popularity. This may change with the recent discovery (Caratori Tontini et al, in press, JGR) that simple 3D FFT filters can be used to transform distributions of density (or magnetization) within a box-shaped 3D volume into gravity (or magnetic) fields within the same volume.

Notes: Abstract The crystal structure of the donor — acceptor adduct (CH3)2HN−SO2 is reported. Crystals of the compound are clear prisms, space group Pna21; at −96°C,a=9.894(1),b=6.051(2),c=16.478(3) Å,D=1.469 g/cm3,V=786.6(5) Å,Z=8. The unit cell contains two crystallographically independent adducts, with N−S bond lengths of 2.015(3) Å and 1.991(3) Å. The average value, 2.00(1) Å is 0.33(4) Å shorter than the 2.34(3) Å value previously determined from microwave spectroscopy of the gas phase species, revealing a large medium effect on the length of the donor — acceptor bond. The structural results are compared with published data for the trimethylamine — SO2 adduct, and discussed in terms of existing experimental and theoretical results for other donor — acceptor systems.

Notes: Abstract We present near infrared maps of the planetary nebula IC 418 taken at 5 arc sec spatial resolution. These show an extremely compact source structure at 1.65 μm, and very much broader and more elliptical emission distributions at 2.2 and 3.6 μm. The possibility that the near infrared continuum derives from small grains with low thermal capacity is discussed, and synthetic spectra are derived. These indicate a very much slower variation of flux with wavelength than would be deduced for grains at unitary temperature, and imply a near infrared continuum which is significantly cooler than maximum grain temperatures. Fits to the spectrum of IC 418 suggest that peak grain temperatures may approachT p0∼103 K (for εαλ−2), for instance, compared to the observed colour temperature of ∼650 K. Finally, the relevant grains are required to be refractory and, given the large C/O ratio in this nebula, probably consist of graphite. Their mass is also required to be small, and is probably of order ∼2×10−7 M ⊙. This compares with the probable total mass for large dust grains of ∼10−4 M ⊙. Although they are both small and warm, such grains would be expected to persist over the lifetime of the nebula, and may also be responsible for various NIR band emission features.

Notes: Abstract The nature of semi-regular oscillations in the transition zones of certain novae is discussed. It is found that hydrostatic collapse following a reduction of radiative support for the photospheric layers is a likely explanation of transition zone inception.

Notes: Summary The heterocyclic amino acid, β-(6-bromopyridin-3-yl)alanine [DL-a-amino-β-(6-bromopyridin-3-yl)propanoic acid], interferes with the morphological development of the cruciferArabidopsis thaliana when incorporated in the growth medium. It appears to overcome the normal apical dominance control mechanism within the seedling, producing multirather than single-stemmed plants.

Notes: Abstract During the seasonal aerial application of insecticides on cotton, a cholinesterase surveillance program was realized and the adherence of the safety measures in connection with insecticides was supervised. No cases of ill health or poisoning due to the handling of the insecticides are known to have occurred amongst the pilots, entomologists, and aircraft engineers. Only a small number of ground personnel and landing strip workmen showed temporarily depressed cholinesterase levels while engaged in this program.

Notes: Abstract 1. Wildtype Oregon-R Drosophila melanogaster were trained in the ambient magnetic field to a horizontal gradient of 365 nm light emanating from one of the 4 cardinal compass directions and were subsequently tested in a visually-symmetrical, radial 8-arm maze in which the magnetic field alignment could be varied. When tested under 365 nm light, flies exhibited consistent magnetic compass orientation in the direction from which light had emanated in training. 2. When the data were analyzed by sex, males exhibited a strong and consistent magnetic compass response while females were randomly oriented with respect to the magnetic field. 3. When tested under 500 nm light of the same quantal flux, females were again randomly oriented with respect to the magnetic field, while males exhibited a 90° clockwise shift in magnetic compass orientation relative to the trained direction. 4. This wavelength-dependent shift in the direction of magnetic compass orientation suggests that Drosophila may utilize a light-dependent magnetic compass similar to that demonstrated previously in an amphibian. However, the data do not exclude the alternative hypothesis that a change in the wavelength of light has a non-specific effect on the flies' behavior, i.e., causing the flies to exhibit a different form of magnetic orientation behavior.
