    Description: Degradation of cattle pastures is a management concern that influences future land use in Amazonia. However, “degradation” is poorly defined and has different meanings for ranchers, ecologists, and policy makers. Here we analyze pasture degradation using objective scalars of photosynthetic vegetation (PV), nonphotosynthetic vegetation (NPV), and exposed soil (S) derived from Landsat imagery. A general, probabilistic spectral mixture model decomposed satellite spectral reflectance measurements into subpixel estimates of PV, NPV, and S covers at ranches in western and eastern Amazonia. Most pasture management units at all ranches fell along a single line of decreasing PV with increasing NPV and S, which could be considered a degradation continuum. The ranch with the highest stocking densities and most intensive management had greater NPV and S than a less intensively managed ranch. The number of liming, herbiciding, and disking treatments applied to each pasture management unit was positively correlated with NPV and negatively correlated with PV. Although these objective scalars revealed signs of degradation, intensive management kept exposed soil to 〈40% cover and maintained economically viable cattle production over several decades. In ranches with few management inputs, the high PV cover in young pastures declined with increasing pasture age, while NPV and S increased, even where grazing intensity was low. Both highly productive pastures and vigorous regrowth of native vegetation cause high PV values. Analysis of spectral properties holds promise for identifying areas where grazing intensity has exceeded management inputs, thus increasing coverage of senescent foliage and exposed soil.

    Notes: A computationally efficient scheme for generating pumping rates was developed for use with a pulsed CO2 laser model. A steady-state solution of the Boltzmann electron transport equation generates the rates. Vibrational temperatures for the CO2 and N2 populations are determined by iterating the Boltzmann solver with the rate equation model. Rapid convergence and coarse grids allow quick calculations of pulse shape, peak power, and total energy. Results compare well with a fully time-dependent Boltzmann solver.

    Notes: Electrical characteristics associated with radiation detection were measured on single-crystal natural type-IIa diamond using two techniques: charged particle-induced conductivity and time-resolved transient photoinduced conductivity. The two techniques complement each other: The charged particle-induced conductivity technique measures the product of the carrier mobility μ and lifetime τ throughout the bulk of the material while the transient photoconductivity technique measures the carrier mobility and lifetime independently at the first few micrometers of the material surface. For each technique, the μτ product was determined by integration of the respective signals. The collection distance that a free carrier drifts in an electric field was extracted by each technique. As a result, a direct comparison of bulk and surface electrical properties was performed. The data from these two techniques are in agreement, indicating no difference in the electrical properties between the bulk and the surface of the material. The collection distance continues to increase with field up to 25 kV/cm without saturation. Using the transient photoconductivity technique the carrier mobility was measured separately and compared with a simple electron-phonon scattering model. The general characteristics of carrier mobility, lifetime, and collection distance at low electric field appear to be adequately described by the model.

    Notes: The equilibrium structure and interconversion tunneling of the van der Waals dimer of sulphur dioxide is investigated. Results with the electrostatic model are compared with those obtained ab initio at the self-consistent field level and with second order Møller–Plesset perturbation theory. This complex is shown to be a difficult problem for theoretical chemistry. We have located six stationary points on the dimer surface, two of which are probably transition states. The lowest energy region is very flat at all levels of theory but dispersion forces are likely to be responsible for the observed Cs symmetry global minimum. Substantial vibrational averaging must be invoked to explain the observed dipole moment. The tunneling splittings can be explained by a single motion proceeding via a centrosymmetric transition state and analogous to the internal rotation of acetylene dimer. A model potential gives a value of 56 cm−1 for the barrier, within the range predicted ab initio. We have also investigated three cyclic structures of the SO2 trimer, two of which are minima. The global minimum is probably nonsymmetric.

    Notes: The technique of near forward laser scattering is used to infer characteristics of intrinsic and controlled density fluctuations in laser-produced plasmas. Intrinsic fluctuations are studied in long-scalelength plasmas where it is found that the fluctuations exhibit scale sizes related to the intensity variation scales in the plasma forming and interaction beams. Stimulated Brillouin forward scattering and filamentation appear to be the primary mechanism through which these fluctuations originate. The beam spray resulting from these fluctuations is important to understand, since it can affect symmetry in an inertial confinement fusion (ICF) experiment. Controlled fluctuations are studied in foam and exploding foil targets. Forward scattered light from foam targets shows evidence that the initial target inhomogeneities remain after the target is laser heated. Forward scattered light from an exploding foil plasma shows that a regular intensity pattern can be used to produce a spatially correlated density fluctuation pattern. These results provide data which are being used to benchmark numerical models of beam spray.

    Notes: It is shown that the measured laser power transmission through a large scale length, high temperature plasma (which emulates an indirect drive ignition-scale plasma) is in approximate agreement with the simulated transmission provided the simulations account for the power loss due to scattering from laser-plasma instabilities. Detailed accounting of the incident, transmitted, scattered, and absorbed powers is used to infer the likely location in the target where most of the scattering occurs along the incident beam trajectory. This location is near the incident laser side of the target at peak electron temperatures for a range of laser intensities. As a result, the backscattered light measurements at peak electron temperature do not require significant adjustment to account for attenuation of the backscattered light as it propagates out through the plasma. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
