Description: As a critical subsystem in electric vehicles and smart grids, a battery energy storage system plays an essential role in enhancement of reliable operation and system performance. In such applications, a battery energy storage system is required to provide high energy utilization efficiency, as well as reliability. However, capacity inconsistency of batteries affects energy utilization efficiency dramatically; and the situation becomes more severe after hundreds of cycles because battery capacities change randomly due to non-uniform aging. Capacity mismatch can be solved by decomposing a cluster of batteries in series into several low voltage battery packs. This paper introduces a new analysis method to optimize energy utilization efficiency by finding the best number of batteries in a pack, based on capacity distribution, order statistics, central limit theorem, and converter efficiency. Considering both battery energy utilization and power electronics efficiency, it establishes that there is a maximum energy utilization efficiency under a given capacity distribution among a certain number of batteries, which provides a basic analysis for system-level optimization of a battery system throughout its life cycle. Quantitative analysis results based on aging data are illustrated, and a prototype of flexible energy storage systems is built to verify this analysis.

Description: This paper reviews the applications of micro/nanoparticles in microfluidics device fabrication and analytical processing. In general, researchers have focused on two properties of particles—electric behavior and magnetic behavior. The applications of micro/nanoparticles could be summarized on the chip fabrication level and on the processing level. In the fabrication of microfluidic chips (chip fabrication level), particles are good additives in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to prepare conductive or magnetic composites which have wide applications in sensors, valves and actuators. On the other hand, particles could be manipulated according to their electric and magnetic properties under external electric and magnetic fields when they are travelling in microchannels (processing level). Researchers have made a great progress in preparing modified PDMS and investigating the behaviors of particles in microchannels. This article attempts to present a discussion on the basis of particles applications in microfluidics.

Description: Water, Vol. 9, Pages 634: Two Dimension Reduction Methods for Multi-Dimensional Dynamic Programming and Its Application in Cascade Reservoirs Operation Optimization Water doi: 10.3390/w9090634 Authors: Zhiqiang Jiang Hui Qin Changming Ji Zhongkai Feng Jianzhong Zhou An efficient reservoir operation technique plays a very important role in improving the water resources and energy efficiency of reservoirs. In order to effectively avoid or alleviate the “curse of dimensionality” of Multi-dimensional Dynamic Programming (MDP) in the application of cascade reservoirs operation optimization (CROO) and keep a global convergence at the same time, two dimension reduction methods are proposed in this paper. One is a hybrid algorithm of MDP and a Progressive Optimality Algorithm (POA), named MDP-POA, which combines the global convergence of MDP and the strong local search ability of POA. MDP-POA first takes the global optimal trajectory of MDP in a low discrete degree as the initial trajectory of the POA, and then implements further optimization to the obtained initial trajectory by the POA with a high discrete degree, so as to avoid the “curse of dimensionality” of MDP in high discrete degree and the dependency of the POA for the initial trajectory. The other is an improved MDP (IMDP), which first constructs a corridor by the optimal trajectory of MDP in a lower discrete degree, and then implements further optimization in the corridor by MDP with a relatively high discrete degree, so as to avoid a large number of unnecessary calculations, and shorten the run-time effectively. In a case study, the results of MDP-POA, IMDP, and MDP are compared and analyzed from the aspects of power generation and run-time. The analysis indicates that the proposed MDP-POA and IMDP both have a good application effect and are worthy of further promotion.

Description: Materials, Vol. 11, Pages 784: Study on the Characteristics of Walnut Shell/Co-PES/Co-PA Powder Produced by Selective Laser Sintering Materials doi: 10.3390/ma11050784 Authors: Yueqiang Yu Yanling Guo Ting Jiang Jian Li Kaiyi Jiang Hui Zhang Yu Zhuang Agricultural and forestry wastes are used as materials for selective laser sintering (SLS) to alleviate resource shortage, reduce the pollution of the environment, lower the cost of materials, and improve the accuracy of parts produced by SLS. However, the mechanical properties of wood–plastic parts are poor, and thus they cannot be applied widely. In order to improve the mechanical properties of wood–plastic parts, a new type of walnut shell polymer composite (WSPC) was prepared by a polymer mixing method and was used to produce parts via SLS. Additionally, the dimensional accuracy, morphologies, density, and mechanical properties of the WSPC parts were studied. The results showed that the addition of a small amount of copolyamide (Co-PA) powder could effectively improve the mechanical properties and decrease the density of the WSPC parts. By increasing the amount of Co-PA powder and decreasing that of copolyester (Co-PES) powder, the mechanical properties first increased, then decreased, and finally increased again; in addition, the density first decreased then increased. By increasing the preheating temperature, the mechanical properties and density of the WSPC parts were enhanced.

Description: Materials, Vol. 10, Pages 1381: Study on the Ingredient Proportions and After-Treatment of Laser Sintering Walnut Shell Composites Materials doi: 10.3390/ma10121381 Authors: Yueqiang Yu Yanling Guo Ting Jiang Jian Li Kaiyi Jiang Hui Zhang To alleviate resource shortage, reduce the cost of materials consumption and the pollution of agricultural and forestry waste, walnut shell composites (WSPC) consisting of walnut shell as additive and copolyester hot melt adhesive (Co-PES) as binder was developed as the feedstock of selective laser sintering (SLS). WSPC parts with different ingredient proportions were fabricated by SLS and processed through after-treatment technology. The density, mechanical properties and surface quality of WSPC parts before and after post processing were analyzed via formula method, mechanical test and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. Results show that, when the volume fraction of the walnut shell powder in the WSPC reaches the maximum (40%), sintered WSPC parts have the smallest warping deformation and the highest dimension precision, although the surface quality, density, and mechanical properties are low. However, performing permeating resin as the after-treatment technology could considerably increase the tensile, bending and impact strength by 496%, 464%, and 516%, respectively.

Description: Water, Vol. 10, Pages 20: Studying Operation Rules of Cascade Reservoirs Based on Multi-Dimensional Dynamics Programming Water doi: 10.3390/w10010020 Authors: Zhiqiang Jiang Hui Qin Wenjie Wu Yaqi Qiao Although many optimization models and methods are applied to the optimization of reservoir operation at present, the optimal operation decision that is made through these models and methods is just a retrospective review. Due to the limitation of hydrological prediction accuracy, it is practical and feasible to obtain the suboptimal or satisfactory solution by the established operation rules in the actual reservoir operation, especially for the mid- and long-term operation. In order to obtain the optimized sample data with global optimality; and make the extracted operation rules more reasonable and reliable, this paper presents the multi-dimensional dynamic programming model of the optimal joint operation of cascade reservoirs and provides the corresponding recursive equation and the specific solving steps. Taking Li Xianjiang cascade reservoirs as a case study, seven uncertain problems in the whole operation period of the cascade reservoirs are summarized after a detailed analysis to the obtained optimal sample data, and two sub-models are put forward to solve these uncertain problems. Finally, by dividing the whole operation period into four characteristic sections, this paper extracts the operation rules of each reservoir for each section respectively. When compared the simulation results of the extracted operation rules with the conventional joint operation method; the result indicates that the power generation of the obtained rules has a certain degree of improvement both in inspection years and typical years (i.e., wet year; normal year and dry year). So, the rationality and effectiveness of the extracted operation rules are verified by the comparative analysis.

Description: Remote Sensing, Vol. 10, Pages 1168: Drought and Flood Monitoring of the Liao River Basin in Northeast China Using Extended GRACE Data Remote Sensing doi: 10.3390/rs10081168 Authors: Xinhui Chen Jinbao Jiang Hui Li In recent years, alternating periods of floods and droughts, possibly related to climate change and/or human activity, have occurred in the Liao River Basin of China. To monitor and gain a deep understanding of the frequency and severity of the hydro-meteorological extreme events in the Liao River Basin in the past 30 years, the total storage deficit index (TSDI) is established by the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE)-based terrestrial water storage anomalies (TWSAs) and the general regression neural network (GRNN)-predicted TWSA. Results indicate that the GRNN model trained with GRACE-based TWSA, model-simulated soil moisture, and precipitation observations was optimal, and the correlation coefficient and the root mean square error (RMSE) of the predicted TWSA and GRACE TWSA for the testing period equal 0.90 and 18 mm, respectively. The drought and flood conditions monitored by the TSDI were consistent with those of previous studies and records. The extreme climate events could indirectly reflect the status of the regional hydrological cycle. By monitoring the extreme climate events in the study area with TSDI, which was based on the TWSA of GRACE and GRNN, the decision of water resource management in the Liao River Basin could be made reasonably.

Description: Measured by harmonic tests, the viscoelastic properties of Chinese fir during moisture sorption processes were examined under three relative humidity (RH) modes: RHramp, RHisohume, and RHstep. The stiffness decreased and damping increased as a function of the moisture content (MC), which is presumed to be the effect of plasticization and an unstable state. The increasing damping was associated with the breaking of hydrogen bonds and the formation of free volume within polymer networks. The changes of loss modulus ratio at 1 and 20 Hz, E″1Hz/E″20Hz, proved the changing trend of the unstable state. Higher ramping rates aggravated the unstable state at the RHramp period, and higher constant RH levels provided more recovery of the unstable state at the RHisohume period. Changes of viscoelastic properties were associated with RH (varied or remained constant), and the application of Boltzmann’s superposition principle is a good approach to simulate viscoelasticity development.
