Notes: Abstract The transient dynamics of a single-mode semiconductor laser subjected to both weak optical feedback and light injection is studied. Even at detuning values for which injection locking is not effective, turn-on jitter and frequency jitter can still be strongly reduced by adjusting either the length of the external cavity or the detuning.

Notes: Abstract The electrogenerative oxidation of ferrous ions in 3m sulfuric acid, containing sulfur dioxide and subsequent sulfur dioxide oxidation, were studied in connection with potential regenerable sulfur dioxide remediation processes. The presence of sulfur dioxide in the feed stream did not affect cell performance. Oxidation of sulfur dioxide in the electrogenerative reactor took place when high ferrous to ferric ion conversions were obtained. Low cost graphite and iron ions served as an effective mediating system for promoting electron transfer to sulfur dioxide in strong acid solutions. In contrast, the homogenous reaction between iron(iii) and sulfur dioxide is relatively slow. In a separate batch reactor, the heterogeneous iron(iii) and sulfur dioxide reaction was found to be graphite catalysed, accounting for sulfur dioxide conversion observed in the electrogenerative reactor. Ferrous ion presence should be minimized, because it inhibits the desired catalysed reaction.

Notes: Abstract Zinc–nickel electrocoatings obtained from an industrial bath containing two additives were characterized by analysing their morphology, structure, microhardness, residual stress and corrosion resistance. Changes in deposit characteristics following the addition of saccharin were also studied. All coating, with or without saccharin, presented a good appearance, good mechanical properties and a high corrosion resistance. Moreover, by varying certain plating conditions it was observed that the deposits maintained their properties over a wide interval of experimental conditions, which suggests their suitability for use in batch bath.

Notes: Abstract The use of sulphur dioxide as an anode depolarizer in the electrolytic production of hydrogen can considerably reduce the electrical energy input to the electrolyzer. The present work deals with developments in the technology of SO2-depolarized electrolysis. Recent achievements in electrode fabrication techniques and optimization of cell configuration have resulted in substantial improvements in both cell potential and performance stability. While operating in 50 wt% sulphuric acid at 50° C and 1 atm, the measured cell potentials at 200 and 400mA cm−2 were ≈ 0.77 and 1.05V (including ohmic losses), respectively. A cell endurance test, performed at a constant current density of 100mA cm−2, indicated that a stabilized cell potential of ≈ 675 mV was achieved after 80 hours of continuous operation. The resulting gas from the test cell contained 98.7 vol% hydrogen. The effect of acid concentration in the range 10–60 wt% on the performance characteristics of an SO2-depolarized electrolyzer was also investigated. Experimental results revealed that the optimum acid concentration for operating SO2-depolarized electrolyzers is approximately 30 wt%. The observed cell potential was only 0.71 V at 200mA cm−2.

Notes: Abstract Let f:X→Sbe a projective morphism of Noetherian schemes. We assume fpurely of relative dimension dand finite Tor-dimensional. We associate to d+1 invertible sheaves $$L{\text{,}}...{\text{,}}L_{d + 1}$$ on Xa line bundle I X/S ( $$L{\text{,}}...{\text{,}}L_{d + 1}$$ ) on Sdepending additively on the $$L_{\text{1}}$$ , commuting to ‘good’ base changes and which represents the integral along the fibres of fof the product of the first Chern classes of the $$L_{\text{1}}$$ . If d=0, I X/S ( $$L$$ ) is the norm N X/S ( $$L$$ ).

Notes: Abstract. Estrogen-receptor–like binding was partially characterized in liver tissue of prespawning female largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides (LMB). Saturation and Scatchard analyses exhibited estrogen binding activity with high affinity (Kd in the 10−9 M range) and limited capacity (nuclear = 37.4 fmol/g tissue; cytosol = 234 fmol/g tissue). Androgens, progestins, and cortisol competed poorly for binding in competition studies. Thus, LMB liver estrogen binding activity possesses similar properties to estrogen receptors (ER) described in other vertebrates. In a study of prespawning female LMB from Lake Hartwell, SC/GA, a reservoir contaminated by polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), individuals environmentally exposed to high levels of PCBs had significantly lower ER binding capacity (Bmax) and higher nonspecific binding (NS) than fish from a relatively uncontaminated reference location. Fish obtained at a site with intermediate levels of PCBs did not exhibit the expected decrease in Bmax. The lower Bmax observed in fish from the location with high PCB contamination is consistent with the reported behavior of liver ER in fish experimentally exposed to PCBs. Increased NS in the ER assays could be related to elevations in albumin associated with the PCB exposure.

Notes: Abstract Experiments using high-efficiency neutron detectors have detected neutron emission from various forms of Pd and Ti metal in pressurized D2 gas cells and D2O electrolysis cells. Four independent neutron detectors based on3He gas tubes were used. Both random neutrons (0.05–0.2 n/s) and time-correlated neutron bursts (10–280 n) of ≤100-μs duration were measured using time-correlation counting techniques. The majority of the neutron burst events occurred at ∼ −30°C as the samples were warming up from the liquid nitrogen temperature.

Notes: Summary The effect of isotope substitutions on reactive probabilities and product vibrational distributions of the reaction of Cl2 with H has been investigated using collinear accurate quantum techniques. The behaviour of the reactive probability with energy has been parameterized with the aid of quasi-classical trajectory results while detailed distributions have been modelled in terms of a Franck-Condon treatment.
