Notizen: It has been shown that the only way to predict the size of the PTC effect displayed by a crystalline polymer when filled with conductive particles is through the knowledge of the glass transition point of the polymer. The size of the PTC anomaly is found to decrease sharply with rise in glass transition temperature and for a polymer to be a useful PTC material its glass transition must be below 0°C. It has not been possible to explain this relationship by any of the current theories of the PTC mechanism in filled polymers.

Notizen: Because of the increase in cost of foreign oil, ethylene costs have increased markedly within the last several years. There is presently a sizeable incentive to reduce raw material costs for basic polymer manufacture. The polyketones, synthesized from ethylene and CO, and the polysulfones, synthesized from ethylene and SO2, both utilizing high energy radiation, offer one such possibility. The process has the additional advantage that CO and SO2, usually considered as.wastes and pollutants from fossil fuel burning power plants, are converted to useful materials. The polyketones and polysulfones formed by radiation-induced polymerization from the gas phase below 100°C have been found to be high molecular weight polymers which, depending on composition, either melt with difficulty or decompose at temperatures of 250°C or higher. The higher temperature (〉100°C) catalyst-induced reaction produces low molecular weight waxes. Design calculations indicate that for a G value of 10, 000 and 50 percent energy deposition efficiency, it would take 331 megacuries of Co6O to conserve 2 billion pounds of ethylene or 25 percent of the overall U.S. consumption in the PE market by substituting CO and SO2. This savings amounts to as much as $280 million at today's market price. Electron machine radiation with a 25 percent energy deposition efficiency requires a total beam power of 9800 KW. The use of machine radiation is preferred because of safety, availability, and lower initial investment. The challenge presented by the development of these substituted polymer systems depends on (1) the determination of the uniqueness of the radiation process and confirming the yields with electron machine radiation, (2) the processability and market acceptability of the substituted polymers, and (3) the ability to design an efficient radiation process reactor.

Notizen: This work shows how laboratory experiments may provide parameters which are useful in modeling a commercial process of polystyrene devolatilization. Such processes often occur at temperatures where depolymerization of polystyrene to monomer may be significant. Polystyrene devolatilizers function by forming thin films of the polymer, with styrene loss by flashing and diffusion and styrene generation by depolymerization. The modeling parameters of importance are: depolymerization rate constant, monomer diffusivity, and thermodynamic equilibrium polymer-vapor partition coefficient. Typical levels of styrene in polystyrene in the last stage of devolatilization are 100 to 1000 ppm. Pressures and temperatures in the devolatilizer are often less than 10 torr and greater than 200°C. For styrene-polystyrene the desired parameters have not been reported, nor apparently measured, at the concentration, pressure and temperature levels of interest.

Notizen: Ionene glasses are considered as being a new class of materials. Their properties have been investigated in detail by thermoanalytical, solid state NMR, and dielectric techniques. The segmental dynamics of these cationic polyelectrolytes, labeled in chosen positions, have been studied with solid state 2H-NMR. Below the glass transition the quaternized ammonium groups in the polymer backbone are essentially static, due to strong Coulomb interactions. The glass transition in these materials is characterized by the softening of a network formed by the N+-cations. However, both the low molecular weight counterions and the organic chain segments linking the ammonium groups are already mobile below Tg. The dynamics of the organic segments in the glassy state can be described as motion between fixed ends. Ionic conductivity in the glassy state is based on thermally activated anion transport. The influence of the flexibility of the organic chain segments and of the type of the anion on the conductivity are discussed. A simple analytic expression is proposed to describe the conductivity behavior in the low frequency limit.

Notizen: Temperature distribution at the exit of the leakage gap is of interest for a number of problems. For the calculation of temperatures, the leakage flow may be considered to be a pure drag flow to a good approximation. In the Newtonian case, thermal development length may be expressed in terms of gap height as L ≈ 3/8Pe · δ;usually this is less than the available gap length. Pe is the Peclet number and δ the height of leakage gap. Therefore the existing flow may be considered fully developed. For power law fluids, numerical calculations lead to results of the same order. Martin's results therefore may be applied to the flow at the exit of the leakage gap.

Notizen: The mechanical behavior of polyurethane-poly(methyl methacrylate) interpenetrating polymer networks (PUR/PAc IPN's) was investigated. Stress-strain and impact resistance measurements were made on IPN's with a variable PUR content. The effect of the degree of crosslinking of each network on the mechanical properties was also studied. It appears that only the ultimate elongation varies largely upon changing the crosslink degree. The results are interpreted in terms of the contribution of each network to the mechanical behavior, but also by the interpenetration of both components and by the phase continuity of the PAc network.

Notizen: This is a study of materials which are positive-temperature-coefficient resistors. Such materials, composed of conductive particles dispersed in a crystalline polymeric matrix, have been found to be of limited stability. An example is carbon black in high-density polyethylene. On repeated cycling through the anomaly temperature or on extensive heating at or above the anomaly temperature, the room temperature resistivity rises and the anomaly height falls to zero. This phenomenon has been shown to be caused by the absorption of oxygen by the polymer matrix which alters the structure, reduces the crystallinity, and induces an unusual form of crosslinking of a reversible nature.

Notizen: Star-shaped block copolymers were used as heat activated adhesives in glass to glass joints. The branches consisted in either AB or ABA poly(styrene-b-isoprene) block copolymers. Tensile shear strengths of simple lap joints were measured for star block copolymers differing in the length or in the number of branches. Values higher than those of the corresponding linear species were obtained. These results were related to the presence of chemical junction points created by coupling the linear copolymers.

Notizen: Mineral fillers of flake configuration such as mica can, in principle, produce large increases in modulus and strength especially if the flake is oriented predominantly in a plane. Additionally, the resulting composites have the advantage of possessing isotropic properties in the plane of orientation, thereby minimizing the warpage normally associated with the injection molding of fiber-reinforced thermoplastics. However, to properly transmit stress from the matrix to the mica and minimize the effect of defects in morphology, a ductile matrix is required with adequate interaction or adhesion between phases. Many of the above conclusions are documented in the literature and are confirmed by our investigations of the system mica-polypropylene. The novelty of this effort rests upon (1) successful attempts to identify specific non-silane additives which by co-blending suitably modify the mica-polypropylene interface, (2) to demonstrate the remarkable effects of time-temperature during melt processing on the behavior of this system; and, (3) to show the relation between composition and time-temperature effects on resultant mechanical, physical, and thermal properties. Most notably, large improvements in tensile and flexural strength and heat distortion temperature can be attributed to the use of small amounts of chlorinated organic compounds blended under carefully selected melt process conditions. Some speculation concerning the mechanism of interaction will be discussed and the resultant potential for increased application will also be outlined.
