    Notes: Abstract A difference equation model for the dynamics of a semelparous size-structured species consisting of juvenile and adult individuals is derived and studied. The adult population consists of two size classes, a smaller class and a larger more fertile class. Negative feedback occurs through slowed juvenile growth due to increased total population levels during the developmental period and consequently a smaller adult size at maturation. Intra-specific competition coefficients are size dependent and measure the strength of intra-specific competition between juveniles and adults. It is shown that equilibrium states in which adults and juveniles occur together at all times are in general destabilized by significantly increased juvenilevs adults competition with the result that stable periodic cycles appear, in which the generations alternate in time and hence avoid competition. This result supports the tenet that intra-specific competition between juveniles and adults is destabilizing. Exceptions to this destabilization principle are found, however, in which populations exhibiting non-equilibrium, aperiodic dynamics can be equilibrated by increase competition between juveniles and adults. This occurs, for example, when adult fertility and competition coefficients are significantly size class dependent.

    Notes: Abstract A general version of a model of Ebenman for the dynamics of a population consisting of competing juveniles and adults is analyzed using methods of bifurcation theory. A very general existence results is obtained for non-trivial equilibria and non-negative synchronous two-cycles that bifurcate simultaneously at the critical valuer=1 of the inherent net reproductive rater. Stability is studied in this general setting near the bifurcation point and conditions are derived that determine which of these two bifurcating branches is the stable branch. These general results are supplemented by numerical studies of the asymptotic dynamics over wider parameter ranges where various other bifurcations and stable attractors are found. The implications of these results are discussed with respect to the effects on stability that age class competition within a population can have and whether such competition is stabilizing or destabilizing.

    Notes: Abstract Novel Ag/SiO2–Al2O3 catalysts with low silver content prepared by the sol–gel method exhibit excellent catalytic properties in the catalytic oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde. The silver content was as low as 2% and the yield of formaldehyde was achieved as 90.3%, which is 16% higher than that of pumice‐supported silver and even 5–6% higher than that of a commercial electrolytic silver catalyst. XRD, XPS and SEM results reveal that all silver was present as Ag+ before catalytic reaction and was partially reduced to the metallic state after the reaction. It was also found that silver was aggregated on the surface after its reduction.

    Notes: Abstract Effects of GTP-binding proteins on the activation of secretory phospholipase A2 (sPLA2) and cytosolic phospholipase A2 (cPLA2) in rat liver during two different phases of sepsis were studied. Sepsis was induced by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP). Experiments were divided into three groups: control, early sepsis, and late sepsis. Early and late sepsis refers to those animals sacrificed at 9 and 18 h, respectively, after CLP. The results show that in the absence of G-protein modulator, hepatic sPLA2 and cPLA2 activities were activated by 40.8-46 and 91.6-105.8%, respectively, during early and late phases of sepsis. GTPγS and fluoroaluminate (A1F4-) stimulated sPLA2 and cPLA2 activities within each experimental group, i.e., control, early sepsis, and late sepsis. The GTPγS and A1F4--stimulated sPLA2 and cPLA2 activities remained significantly elevated during early phase (22.3-65.6% increase) and late phase (32.5-109.1% increase) of sepsis. Further analyses demonstrate that cholera toxin significantly stimulated sPLA2 and cPLA2 activities within each experimental group, and that the cholera toxin stimulated sPLA2 and cPLA2 activities remained significantly higher during early phase (23.5-37%increase) and late phase (56.7-70% increase) of sepsis. In contrast, pertussis toxin significantly inhibited sPLA2 and cPLA2 activities within each experimental group, and that the pertussis toxin-inhibited sPLA2 and cPLA2 activities remained significantly higher in early septic (57-68.5% increase) and late septic (34.6-45.5% increase) experiments. These data demonstrate that cholera toxin-sensitive Gαs and pertussis toxin-sensitive Gαi were both involved in the activation of sPLA2 and cPLA2 activities in rat liver during the progression of sepsis.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper, we studied the interface debonding when a crack perpendicularly approaches an interface between two dissimilar elastic materials. An interface toughness law was first defined according to an adhesive model governing the interface fracture. By analysing the interaction between the normally approaching crack and the interface crack and by tacking account of the adhesive forces at ends of the interfacial crack, a model for studying the interface debonding and the debonding stability was established. It is observed that the interface debonding toughness depends strongly on the mixed mode locally produced over the plastic adhesive zone of the interface. Moreover, the interface debonding may be unstable, i.e. the interface debonding length may jump from an initial value to a certain final value under critical remote loading. This jump may be surprisedly important in certain cases. These results agree with the experimental works gathered so far and can be used to explain the mechanism of 'crack arrestor' formed by an interface.

    Notes: Abstract A general class of age-structured models based upon the McKendrick/von Foerster equations are used to study intraspecific competition between juveniles and adults. Criteria for the existence and stability of equilibria are obtained and the dependence of equilibrium stability (i.e. equilibrium resilience) on competition coefficients is analyzed for low inherent net reproductive numbers. The results are applied to the question of whether juvenile vs. adult intraspecific competition is stabilizing or destabilizing. Two types of competition are studied. The first, involving suppressed adult fertility due to competition from juveniles, was found to be destabilizing in that equilibrium levels are lowered and equilibrium resilience weakened by increased competition. The second, involving increased juvenile mortality due to competition from adults, was found to be considerably more complicated. While equilibrium levels were again reduced by increased competition, equilibrium resilience can either be weakened or strengthened. A criterion for determining the effects on resilience is derived and several examples are given to illustrate various possibilities in this case.

    Notes: Abstract.  We study the dynamics of sexually transmitted pathogens in a heterosexually active population, where females are divided into two different groups based on their susceptibility to two distinct pathogenic strains. It is assumed that a host cannot be invaded simultaneously by both disease agents and that when symptoms appear – a function of the pathogen, strain, virulence, and an individual’s degree of susceptibility – then individuals are treated and/or recover. Heterogeneity in susceptibility to the acquisition of infection and/or in variability in the length of the infection period of the female subpopulations is incorporated. Pathogens’ coexistence is highly unlikely on homogeneously mixing female and male populations with no heterogeneity among individuals of either gender. Variability in susceptibility in the female subpopulation makes coexistence possible albeit under a complex set of circumstances that must include differences in contact/mixing rates between the groups of females and the male population as well as differences in the lengths of their average periods of infectiousness for the three groups.
