Notes: Abstract Raman and infrared spectra have been recorded of water and heavy-water solutions of carbon dioxide, potassium bicarbonate, and potassium carbonate. The structures of the carbonate and bicarbonate ions and CO2 (aqueous solution) have been determined from a consideration of Raman and infrared data. The results reveal the presence of solvent effects in the carbonate and CO2 water solutions. No bands characteristic of H2CO3 were observed in the Raman spectrum of aqueous solutions of CO2.

Notes: Abstract The structures of two thiosemicarbazones are described: syn,E-1-cyclopentano-4-ethyl-3-thiosemicarbazone (1) and syn,E-1-cyclopentano-4-phenyl-3-thiosemicarbazone (2). Crystal data: for 1: tetragonal, P43 (#78), a = b = 8.922(7) Å, c = 12.899(13) Å, and Z = 4; for 2: monoclinic a = 15.163(18) Å, b = 7.482(5) Å, c = 12.467(15) Å, β = 119.04(7)°, and Z = 4. In 1, molecules are linked by hydrogen-bonding into infinite chains with non-planar 9-ring subunits in which thioamides interact with the H—N—C—N—N groups of neighbors. Thioamide groups in 2 form dimers linked by N—B···HS hydrogen-bonds with a planar 8-ring as in solid state structures of carboxylic acids. The semicarbazide syn conformation fosters formation of N—H···N intramolecular hydrogen-bonding in each structure. The solid state structures are consistent with their infrared and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectra.

Notes: Abstract Raman and infrared spectra of gaseous SO2 and SO2 dissolved in H2O and D2O have been recorded. Although the results are in general agreement with previous work, some new infrared data is presented, as well as results on the effect of phase and solvent change on the infrared and Raman spectra. Previous workers have used the technique of vibrational spectroscopy to investigate the structure of the pyrosulfite ion in solution. The present study indicates that it is difficult to make conclusive statements concerning the structure of this ion on the basis of present and previous work. Solutions containing the sulfite ion have also been studied. Spectral differences between previous studies have been investigated, and an earlier study by Bernstein is essentially substantiated, although the present work does indicate, some discrepancy in the 900–1100-cm− region for this ion.

Notes: Abstract Pyridine adsorption on sulfated zirconia (SO 2− 4 -ZrO2) provides evidence for infrared bands characteristic of both Brønsted and Lewis acid sites. Samples treated at 100°C retain water and have a higher fraction of Brønsted acidity than when the sample is treated at 400°C. The fraction of Brønsted acid sites observed for SO 2− 4 -ZrO2 is the same in the presence or absence of supported Pt. Based on pyridine adsorption, exposure to gaseous hydrogen at 100 or 150°C did not significantly alter the fraction of Brønsted acid sites following the exposure to hydrogen.

Notes: Abstract We present 10 and 20 μm spectra of comet Hale-Bopp taken at UKIRT on 1996 June 20 and 1996 September 29.The 10 μm spectra clearly show a strong silicate feature with peaks at 10.0 and 11.2 μm. The 20 μm spectrum on September 29 has strong excess flux relative to a blackbody and a peak near 19μm, in good agreement with the ISO SWS spectra obtained a week later. However, the 20 μm spectrum on June 20 has significantly lower flux than would be expected based on a blackbody extrapolation from the flux at 12.5 μm.
