Description: A simple barotropic quasi-geostrophic model is used to demonstrate that instabilities radiated from an unstable eastern boundary current can generate zonal striations in the ocean interior with realistic wavelengths and amplitudes. Nonlinear transfer of energy from the more unstable trapped modes is important for radiating modes to overcome friction. The dynamics shown here are generic enough to point to the eastern boundary current as a likely source of the observed striations extending from oceanic eastern boundaries.

Description: Upwelling of global deep waters to the sea surface in the Southern Ocean closes the global overturning circulation and is fundamentally important for oceanic uptake of carbon and heat, nutrient resupply for sustaining oceanic biological production, and the melt rate of ice shelves. However, the exact pathways and role of topography in Southern Ocean upwelling remain largely unknown. Here we show detailed upwelling pathways in three dimensions, using hydrographic observations and particle tracking in high-resolution models. The analysis reveals that the northern-sourced deep waters enter the Antarctic Circumpolar Current via southward flow along the boundaries of the three ocean basins, before spiraling southeastward and upward through the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. Upwelling is greatly enhanced at five major topographic features, associated with vigorous mesoscale eddy activity. Deep water reaches the upper ocean predominantly south of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, with a spatially nonuniform distribution. The timescale for half of the deep water to upwell from 30° S to the mixed layer is ~60–90 years.

Description: A multistep dry fractionation method for modification of palm oil was adopted to achieve a high iodine value (IV) of the obtained palm olein, herein denoted as top olein. The effect of the composition of palm oil top olein on the IV and on the crystallization properties was analyzed in detail. Thermal properties of a series of olein and stearin fractions were evaluated by means of differential scanning calorimetry upon cooling. The composition of triacylglycerols in the products was investigated by high-performance liquid chromatography. IV analysis was carried out to measure the degree of unsaturation in these oil samples. Finally, an innovative and reliable method was developed to determine the IV of palm oils by relating the thermal properties with IV. The results agree well with those obtained by the traditional American Oil Chemists' Society method. In the palm oil industry, the iodine value is normally determined by a titration method that uses toxic solvents. An innovative method is proposed to quickly determine the iodine value of oil samples. This approach can provide statistically similar results to those given by traditional official procedures, with the advantages of being extremely rapid and environmentally friendly.

Description: Sm 2 Fe 17 alloys prepared by strip casting technique can be directly nitrided to prepare interstitial Sm 2 Fe 17 N X compounds without pre-crushing. A phenomenon of spontaneous pulverization in the Sm 2 Fe 17 strips induced by nitrogenation is found. This kind of pulverization may arise from the inter-granular fracture along the Sm-rich grain boundary phase as well as trans-granular fracture of Sm 2 Fe 17 primary phase. Anisotropic Sm 2 Fe 17 N 2.85 powders with a remanence (B r ) of 14.1 kGs, a coercive force ( i H c ) of 12.1 kOe, and a maximum energy product ((BH) max ) of 33 MGOe can be prepared using the nitrided strips.

Description: β-Yb 2 Si 2 O 7 is a promising environmental barrier coating (EBC) material and recently attracted attention for its damage tolerance. To investigate the mechanisms of its damage tolerance and possible plasticity, dense β-Yb 2 Si 2 O 7 sample was synthesized by in situ reaction/hot-pressing method, and its mechanical properties were measured from room to high temperatures. The low magnitudes of hardness to Young's modulus ratio H V /E , shear modulus to bulk modulus ratio G/B , and high fracture toughness to strength ratio K IC / σ provide evidences of damage tolerance of β-Yb 2 Si 2 O 7 . β-Yb 2 Si 2 O 7 exhibits extensive plastic deformation in Hertzian contact tests at both room and high temperatures. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations show that the deformation mechanisms are different at low and high temperatures. Deformation twinning and parallel dislocation arrangement occur in plastic deformation at room temperature. Above the brittle-to-ductile transition temperature (between 1200°C and 1300°C), plastic deformation brings out extensive slip and climb of dislocations, while twinning is seldom observed. Measurement of temperature-dependent dynamic Young's modulus demonstrates excellent elastic stiffness retention up to 1300°C.

Description: Background: Pesticide poisoning is an important issue in rural China, and is also a major public health problem that affects the health of farmers. The purpose of this paper is to explore the epidemiology of pesticide poisoning in Jiangsu Province, and to put forward the relevant suggestions on the logical and discerning utilization of the pesticides. Methods: According to the data of the pesticide poisoning report card established by the health hazard detection information system, the cases of pesticide poisoning in Jiangsu Province from 2006 to 2018 were exported to Excel, and the database of pesticide poisoning was established. Furthermore, the imported data was screened and collected. A descriptive statistical analysis had been employed on this data utilizing SPSS 20.0. Results: Between the years 2006 and 2018, 38,513 pesticide poisoning cases were registered in Jiangsu Province, with a downward trend. Meanwhile, 77.83% of poisoning cases involved insecticide poisoning, followed by herbicide and rodenticide. The greater part of the diverse sorts of studied insecticide poisoning cases involved people aged between 30 and 59 years (57.51%). Poisoning cases caused by rodenticide accounted for a large proportion of people aged between 0 and 14 years (23.72%) in non-occupational pesticide poisoning. Regarding seasons, it was distinguished that more insecticide cases were reported in autumn (46.95% of the total number of cases). Pesticide poisoning was reported in 13 cities of Jiangsu Province, and among these, insecticide poisoning was reported mainly from the northern Jiangsu area, which was the same as rodenticide and herbicide. Conclusions: Although there is a decreased risk for pesticide poisoning among farmworkers in Jiangsu Province, the number of farmworkers with pesticide poisoning is still high. Further management of the pesticide utilization is necessary, especially insecticide. More attention ought to be paid to the protection of vulnerable groups, including children and the elderly.

Description: Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with dual-band crop-growth sensors can achieve high-throughput acquisition of crop-growth information. However, the downwash airflow field of the UAV disturbs the crop canopy during sensor measurements. To resolve this issue, we used computational fluid dynamics (CFD), numerical simulation, and three-dimensional airflow field testers to study the UAV-borne multispectral-sensor method for monitoring crop growth. The results show that when the flying height of the UAV is 1 m from the crop canopy, the generated airflow field on the surface of the crop canopy is elliptical, with a long semiaxis length of about 0.45 m and a short semiaxis of about 0.4 m. The flow-field distribution results, combined with the sensor’s field of view, indicated that the support length of the UAV-borne multispectral sensor should be 0.6 m. Wheat test results showed that the ratio vegetation index (RVI) output of the UAV-borne spectral sensor had a linear fit coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.81, and a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.38 compared with the ASD Fieldspec2 spectrometer. Our method improves the accuracy and stability of measurement results of the UAV-borne dual-band crop-growth sensor. Rice test results showed that the RVI value measured by the UAV-borne multispectral sensor had good linearity with leaf nitrogen accumulation (LNA), leaf area index (LAI), and leaf dry weight (LDW); R2 was 0.62, 0.76, and 0.60, and RMSE was 2.28, 1.03, and 10.73, respectively. Our monitoring method could be well-applied to UAV-borne dual-band crop growth sensors.
