Notes: The solution of the stream function-vorticity equations is developed using a multigrid method to improve efficiency in a finite-element p-method. The equations are discretized using 2-D Lagrange finite elements (linear, quadratic and cubic) and solved in iteratively decoupled form using successive approximation and continuation methods. The comparative performance of several multigrid and direct matrix solvers is investigated with respect to convergence characteristics and time performance on the Cray Y-MP.

Notes: A numerical study of three-dimensional natural convection with phase change in a rectangular parallelepiped is described. The fluid has temperature-dependent variable properties. The governing equations are approximated by finite differences, second order in space and first order in time. A boundary-fitted co-ordinate system is implemented to predict the shape and the movement of the solid-liquid interface. Preliminary results have been obtained for freezing of water in a cube for Rayleigh numbers in the range of about 105-106.

Notes: A generalized finite difference scheme is developed to represent the one-dimensional consolidation process. The difference equations are derived from integral balance equations which represent the soil as a mixture of two constituents. No restrictions are placed on the soil constitutive properties or stratigraphy. An approach to stability analysis for the scheme is outlined, and an example problem is presented.

Notes: A recent paper by Donald Gignac describes some difficulties with a certain matrix eigenvalue problem. This paper shows that the difficulties result from the naturue of the matrix itself. Quantities called condition numbers, which measure the sensitivity of the eigenvalues, are computed, and numerical results given.

Notes: Univariate minimization is considered for constrained optimization with the Kavlie-Moe extended interior penalty. An algorithm is derived using a linear-plus-hyperbolic fit suggested by R. L. Fox for interior penalties. A linear extension to the linear-plus-hyperbolic permits rapid convergence with extended interior alties. However, constraint deletion and approximation of remaining constraints before each minimization also characterize the environment. These and other complexities impede accurate fitting of larger intervals. Thus, following Murray, a mixed strategy is adopted with function comparison reductions of interval size to supplement curve fitting.Analysis shows how quadratic and cubic fit searches break down under certain limiting conditions of interior, extended and exterior penalties. A quadratic-extended linear curve derived for exterior penalties and the linear-plus-hyperbolic similarly fail on extended interior penalties. Examples of constrained optimization with extended interior penalties were run on the Stanford IBM 370/168 computer. A stiffened two-panel box provides eight optimization variables with many constraints on demensions and against failure. The extended linear-plus-hyperbolic surpasses cubic and linear-plus hyperbolic fitting, especially when the Fiacco-McCormick multiplier for the penalty becomes small. The value of feedback from curve fitting to decide function comparison use is also illustrated.

Notes: A stable fast marching scheme has been developed for the solution of coupled parabolic partial differential equations such as the Navier-Stokes equations. The scheme was developed with the aid of a stability analysis. The implementation of the method in standard alternating direction implicit algorithms is straightforward. The scheme was tested on the problem of natural convection in a square cavity. The number of iterations required for convergence was significantly reduced compared to conventional methods.

Notes: To explore possible biochemical mechanisms whereby electromagnetic fields of around 0.1 mT might affect immune cells or developing cancer cells, we studied intracellular calcium signaling in the model system Jurkat E6-1 human T-leukemia cells during and following exposure to a 60 Hz magnetic field. Cells were labeled with the intracellular calcium-sensitive fluorescent dye Fluo-3, stimulated with a monoclonal antibody against the cell surface structure CD3 (associated with ligand-stimulated T-cell activation), and analyzed on a FACScan flow-cytometer for increases in intensity of emissions in the range of 515-545 nm. Cells were exposed during or before calcium signal-stimulation to 0.15 mTrms 60 Hz magnetic field. The total DC magnetic field of 78.2 μT was aligned 17.5° off the vertical axis. Experiments used both cells cultured at optimal conditions at 37 °C and cells grown under suboptimal conditions of 24 °C, lowered external calcium, or lowered anti-CD3 concentration. These experiments demonstrate that intracellular signaling in Jurkat E6-1 was not affected by a 60 Hz magnetic field when culture and calcium signal-stimulation were optimal or suboptimal. These results do not exclude field-induced calcium-related effects further down the calcium signaling pathway, such as on calmodulin or other calcium-sensitive enzymes. Notes: An analytical model has been developed for computing embedded subsonic flow in rocket plumes from underexpanded axisymmetric supersonic nozzles. Numerical procedures based on the analysis have been incorporated in a simplified, non-reacting exhaust structure program and calculations for representative plume conditions performed. The technique is numerically stable and has provided satisfactory predictions of Mach-disc associated embedded subsonic flow.
