    Notes: Abstract Electrochromic properties of the mixed solution of n-heptyl viologen dibromide (HV), Fe(CN) 6 4− and NaH2PO2 or KBr were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and the transparency-time relation. When Fe(CN) 6 4− is added to a HV solution the mixture colours violet without inputting any voltage. However, the colour fades gradually by further addition of NaH2PO2, and the transparency of the mixture increases with addition of larger amounts of NaH2PO2. The same effect was observed by addition of KBr to the HV-Fe(CN) 6 4− solution. The input voltage required for the electrochromism of HV is lowered considerably by addition of Fe(CN) 6 4− , when NaH2PO2 or KBr plays a role in controlling the colouringerasing phenomena. The HV-Fe(CN) 6 4− -KBr system showed some HV ‘residue’ in the cyclic voltammogram on an indium-tin oxide (ITO) electrode, while no such HV ‘residue’ was observed in the HV-Fe(CN) 6 4− -NaH2PO2 system. The HV-Fe(CN) 6 4− -NaH2PO2 system is superior in colouring-erasing reproducibility and in response time to the HV solution or the HV-Fe(CN) 6 4− system.

    Notes: Abstract Electrochromic properties of methyl, ethyl, n-hexyl and n-heptyl viologens, and α-, β-, γ-cyclodextrin systems were studied using cyclic voltammetry and absorption spectroscopy. Colourations of red-violet (λ max = 530 or 560 nm), blue (λ max = 600nm) and light purple (λ max = 560 and 600 nm) could be obtained by changing the length of the alkyl chain of viologens or the radius of cyclodextrin. The intermolecular interaction between viologen radicals is weakened when the radicals form inclusion complexes so the blue colour inherent in the monomer of viologen radical appears. The red-violet colour is ascribed to the dimer of the reduced viologen. With the addition of γ-cyclodextrin, viologens were found to be included as dimer. The light purple colour is ascribed to the mixed colour of the monomer and the dimer. Furthermore, since the ratio of monomer and dimer depends upon the concentration of cyclodextrin, any colour between the red-violet of the dimer and the blue of the monomer can be obtained by adjusting the concentration of cyclodextrin. The redox reaction of an inclusion complex was found to depend upon the length of the alkyl viologen and the size of the cavity in cyclodextrin.

    Notes: Abstract We parametrize the space of isometric immersions of the hyperbolic n -space into the hyperbolic ( n +1)-space by a family of properly chosen (at most) countable n -tuples of real-valued functions. This is an answer to the problem posed by Nomizu in 1973. We also construct a one-parameter family of deformable isometric immersions from the quotient spaces of the hyperbolic 2-plane modulo and some totally discontinuous subgroups of isometries.

JHs tested were (10R)-JH I [methyl (2E,6E,10R,11S)-10,11-epoxy-3,11-dimethyl-7-ethyl-2,6-tridecadienoate], (10S)-JH I [methyl (2E, 6E, 10S, 11R)-10,11-epoxy-3,11-dimethyl-7-ethyl-2,6-tridecadienoate], (10R)-JH III [methyl (2E,6E,10R)-10,11-epoxy-3,7,11-trimethyl-2,6-dodecadienoate] and (10S)-JH III [methyl (2E,6E,10S)-10,11-epoxy-3,7,11-trimethyl-2,6-dodecadienoate]. Among these compounds, natural (10R)-JH I was most active and the dose needed to induce 50% larval molting was 0.04 μg/larva; it was approximately 12,000 times more active than unnatural (10S)-JH I. Though natural (10R)-JH III showed slight biological activity, it was only one three-thousandth of that of (10R)-JH I. Unnatural (10S)-JH III exhibited no biological activity at the levels assayed.

    Notes: Abstract Chaotic behaviors of the tent map (a piecewise-linear, continuous map with a unique maximum) are studied analytically throughout its chaotic region in terms of the invariant density and the power spectrum. As the height of the maximum is lowered, successive band-splitting transitions occur in the chaotic region and accumulate to the transition point into the nonchaotic region. The timecorrelation function of nonperiodic orbits and their power spectrum are calculated exactly at the band-splitting points and in the vicinity of these points. The method of eigenvalue problems of the Frobenius-Perron operator is used. 2 m−1 critical modes, wherem = 1,2, 3, ..., are found which exhibit the critical slowing-down near the 2 m−1-band to 2 m -band transition point. After the transition these modes become periodic modes which represent the cycling of nonperiodic orbits among 2 m bands together with the periodic modes generated by the preceding band splittings. Scaling laws near the transition point into the nonchaotic region are investigated and a new scaling law is found for the total intensity of the periodic part of the spectrum.

    Notes: Abstract A novel process for producing inosine 5′-monophosphate (5′-IMP) has been demonstrated. The process consists of two sequential bioreactions; the first is a fermentation of inosine by a mutant of Corynebacterium ammoniagenes, and the second is a unique phosphorylating reaction of inosine by guanosine/inosine kinase (GIKase). GIKase was produced by an Escherichia coli recombinant strain, MC1000(pIK75), which overexpressed the enzyme up to 50% of the total cellular protein. The overproducing plasmid, pIK75, which was randomly screened out from deletion plasmids with various lengths of intermediate sequence between the E. coli trpL Shine-Dalgarno sequence, derived from the vector plasmid, and the start codon of the GIKase structural gene. In pIK75, the start ATG was placed 16 bp downstream of the trpL Shine-Dalgarno sequence under the control of the E. coli trp promoter. Fermentation of inosine and its phosphorylation were sequentially performed in a 5-l jar fermenter. At the end of inosine fermentation by C. ammoniagenes KY13761, culture broth of MC1000(pIK75) was mixed with that of KY13761 to start the phosphorylating reaction. Inosine in the reaction mixture was stoichiometrically phosphorylated, and 91 mM 5′-IMP accumulated in a 12-h reaction. This new biological process has advantages over traditional methods for producing 5′-IMP.

    Notes: Summary A dry powder of betel nuts, piper betel leaves and lime was administered to rats. Epidermal thickening was frequently observed in the upper digestive tracts of rats in groups fed the betel nut diet mixed with lime and the betel leaves diet, and a forestomach papilloma was seen in 1 rat given betel leaves diet. These epidermal changes were scarcely seen in rats given either betel nut or normal diet alone.

Epidemiologic and laboratory results consistently implicate the APOE gene in the pathogenesis of late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD) the ε4 allele increases risk in a dose-dependent fashion, while ε2 confers protection. Individuals are susceptible for AD in varying degrees depending on which combination of APOE alleles has been inherited, APOE promoter polymorphism and other factors. Deposition of both senile plaques and neurofibrillary tangles, the pathologic hall marks of AD, are enhanced by ε4 from the earliest lesions onward – diffuse plaques consisting of Aβ 1 – 42 and neurofibrillary tangles in the entorhinal cortex. Transgenic APOE mice carrying an APP mutation and 0, 1 or 2 copies of APOE showed dose-related increases in plaque deposition in the hippocampus and cortex, a clear indication that APOEp promotes Aβ deposition. The presence of each additional APOE ε4 allele leads to an earlier onset of the histopathological process of about 1 decade, on average. The association of both types of AD-related changes with the occurrence of ε4 suggests that the APOE polymorphism causally contributes to the pathogenesis of AD.

    Notes: Abstract. Apolipoprotein E (apoE) ɛ4 allele is a genetic risk factor for late-onset familial and sporadic Alzheimer’s disease (AD). In the central nervous system, apoE is secreted mainly by astrocytes as a constituent of high-density lipoproteins. A recent study using apoE knockout mice provided strong evidence that apoE promotes cerebral deposition of amyloid β protein (Aβ). However, no clear explanation of the pathogenesis of apoE-induced AD has been provided. Here we discuss two possible mechanisms by which apoE might enhance Aβ deposition. One is the intracellular pathway in which apoE is internalized by neurons and induces lysosomal accumulation of Aβ and amyloidogenic APP (amyloid precursor protein) fragments, leading to neuronal death. The other is the extracellular pathway in which apoE-containing lipoproteins are trapped by Aβ1–42 deposits mobilizing soluble Aβ peptides and consequently enlarge amyloid plaques. These two mechanisms may operate at different stages of AD pathogenesis and suggest a chaperone-like function for the apoE molecule.
