Notes: [Auszug] To clarify the mechanism of ossification, we carried out experiments on the extraction and refinement of bone collagen. The first problem of the extraction of bone collagen is to eliminate the bone mineral which occupies the major part of bone. Some attempts have been made to solve this problem and ...

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The interaction of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and mixture of two surfactants in aqueous system was studied viscometrically on the following five typical combinations of surfactants in three categories, in which in its single solution the first surfactant in each pair interacts with PVP strongly while the second component, except for guanidinium dodecylsulfate, is not at all or only weakly interacting. 1. Different surfactant ions with the same counterions: sodium dodecylsulfate (NaDS) and sodium decylsulfate. 2. The same surfactant ions with different counterions: NaDS and tetrabutylammonium dodecylsulfate; NaDS and guanidinium dodecylsulfate; dodecylammonium thiocyanate (DASCN) and dodecylammonium chloride. 3. An ionic and a nonionic surfactant: NaDS or DASCN and polyoxyethylene dodecylether. These combinations produce varieties of interaction with PVP, and the results were discussed on the basis of the surfactant-surfactant and polymer-surfactants relations and of the counterion distribution around the polymer-surfactants complex.

Notes: Summary The effect of drawing on the molecular motions in amorphous polycarbonate is studied by the dielectric relaxation with following conclusions. (1) A structural model for the drawn polycarbonate is obtained from the data of the density, the birefringence and the height of the endothermic peak atT g . The molecular chains of polycarbonate are supposed to be oriented to the draw direction and packed closely by drawing. No process similar to that in polyethylene terephthalate occurs in polycarbonate. (2) The rate of the torsional oscillation of the frozen chains in the glassy polycarbonate varies with the draw ratio. It decreases at first and then increases near the severance. This behavior can be explained by the local mode relaxation theory and the structural model proposed here. (3) The behavior of polycarbonate by drawing was compared with that of polyethylene terephtalate and discussed.

Notes: Summary Aqueous suspensions and emulsions stabilized solely by nonionic surfactant of the polyoxyethylene type are flocculated by adding polymeric acid (for example, poly-acrylic acid) and electrolyte (acid and neutral salts of polyvalent cations). This destabilization effect of polymeric acids is ascribed to the interaction between the polyacid and nonionic surfactant on the colloid particles. Some examples of the flocculation reaction are shown.

Notes: Abstract. To examine the role of metallothionein (MT) on heavy metal accumulation in hepatic cytosol of rats, this study was carried out to determine the relative Zn, Cd and Cu-binding capacities of MT in hepatic cytosol of Zn, Cd and Cu-injected rats, respectively. The heavy metal contents were detected in the liver and cytosol in the following proportions: 65.2–74.8% of the Zn content, 61.9–65.6% of the Cu content, and approx. 65% of the Cd content. Each rat was given a single intraperitoneal injection of saline, ZnSO4 (1, 5, 10 and 20 mg Zn/kg b.w.), CuSO4 (2, 4 and 6 mg Cu/kg b.w.) or CdCl2 (1, 2 and 3 mg Cd/kg b.w.). The amounts of the increased Zn and Cu were attributable to MT and high molecular weight proteins, while most of the increased Cd was attributable to MT. There was a close relationship between heavy metal content of the cytosol and MT in all heavy metal-injected rats. Our data demonstrated that approx. 60% of the increased Zn or Cu in the hepatic cytosol of Zn or Cu-injected rats was bound to MT, while 83% of the increased Cd in hepatic cytosol of Cd-injected rats was bound to MT. Therefore the order of relative binding capacity in vivo of MT determined for several metals (Cd 〉 Zn 〉 Cu) did not correlate with the published in vitro order of affinity to MT, Cu 〉 Cd 〉 Zn. These results suggested that the role of MT in Zn or Cu accumulation in the liver of Zn or Cu-injected rats was different from that of MT in Cd accumulation in the liver of Cd-injected rats.
