Notizen: Glasses in the Ge-S, Ge-As-Se, and Ge-As-Se-Te systems, doped with Si3N4, were melted after sealing under reduced pressure, and their crystallization behavior was examined using differential thermal analysis/differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffractometry. The effect of Si3N4 doping on the suppression of the crystallization of chalcogenide glasses was confirmed for all three systems and is attributed to the increased crosslinking upon substitution of the chalcogens by nitrogen atoms, presumably forming structural units that are similar to Ge3N4.

Notizen: The effect of a variety of doping additives on the hydration resistance of calcined materials in the MgO–CaO system was investigated. Samples were prepared from lightly calcined flotation magnesite that was mixed with dolomite, as well as from analytically pure CaO and MgO; then, the samples were doped with additives that contained cations with various valences (monvalent to tetravalent). Both the hydration rate and the powdering rate were measured. The important role of the higher-valence cations in improving the hydration resistance of the MgO–CaO materials was revealed. This behavior is believed to be due to the formation of vacancies in solid solutions of CaO or MgO with higher-valence cations. The Ti4+ cation forms a solid solution with CaO, which reduces the Ca2+ concentration and leads to the improved hydration resistance of calcined materials from the MgO–CaO system.

Notizen: The ultraviolet absorption and emission spectra of Ce3+ doped phosphate glasses based on gadolinium and sodium phosphates are studied in the present work. Compared with the cerium-free phosphate glass matrixes, CePO4 doping shifts the ultraviolet absorption edge of glasses into the longer wavelength because of the 4f–5d absorption transition of Ce3+. The emission spectra correlate such red-shift with glass compositions. Explanations are based on variation in the optical basicity of glasses, which corresponds not only to the alkali content but also to the O/P ratio. The latter is proportional to the number of nonbridging oxygen in the oxyanion unit (PO4), and most likely plays an overwhelming role in the overall optical basicity of glasses.
