    Notes: Summary The present paper describes the grafting of vinyl monomers onto cellulose nitrate in non-aqueous medium using benzoyl peroxide as a catalyst. The complete separation of the homopolymers and graft copolymer was carried out by selective solvent extraction. The graft copolymer was characterized by IR spectra. The GPC was used as a technique to differentiate between homopolymer, polymer mixture, polyblend, and graft copolymer.

    Notes: Abstract Precise static dielectric constants are reported for methanol, ethanol, andn-propanol at 10,25, and 40° C and at pressures up to 3 kbar. The measurements were carried out by a low-frequency bridge method using a threeterminal, all-glass cell. An uncertainty of 0.05% is claimed for the data. The results are compared to data from previous investigations, whith the agreement in the absolute magnitude poor but the agreement in the pressure coefficient reasonable in most cases. The data are analyzed in terms of the Kirkwood correlation factorg K as obtained from the Fröhlich equation. In all cases, theg K factor decreases with increased pressure. The problems involved in calculating this factor from the experimental data are discussed, and it is shown that the trends ing K are very dependent upon the assumptions made in isolating the liquid dipole moment from its gas-phase value. This fact also indicates that an interpretation of theg K values in terms of stepwise association of correlation dipoles is premature at this time.

    Notes: Abstract The static dielectric constant of liquid acetonitrile is reported at 10, 25, and 40°C and at pressures up to 3 kbar. Densities of pure acetonitrile were measured where needed in order to analyze the dielectric measurements using the Kirkwood-Fröhlich equation. The Kirkwood correlation factorg K was found to be less than unity with a positive temperature but negative pressure coefficient, suggesting an increasing anticorrelation of dipoles with decreased temperature and increased pressure. Theg K factors are analyzed by a dipole pair-bonding model as outlined by Dannhauser and Flueckinger in which the lowg K values are attributed to the presence of dimers consisting of completely anticorrelated dipoles. The implication of this model on other measurements, especially MNR relaxation studies, is examined.

    Notes: Abstract Electrodeposition of metals from solution is usually accompanied by the simultaneous discharge of hydrogen ions or water molecules. When hydrogen is liberated at an iron/steel surface during electrodeposition, a portion of the hydrogen is absorbed by the metal surface and then diffuses into the interior. The diffused hydrogen produces some detrimental effects, such as reduction in ductility and loss in mechanical strength, leading to hydrogen embrittlement. The present paper reports investigations on hydrogen permeation measurements in zinc-manganese alloy deposition using a modified electrode clamp for easy removal and fixing of the electrode. Hydrogen permeation studies indicate that the porosity of the deposit increases in the following order:Zn-Mn(14.3%), Zn-Mn(2.4%), Zn-Mn(24.8%) and Zn-Mn(37.5%).This is in agreement with the corrosion data obtained which indicates that Zn-Mn alloy deposits with low manganese content show better performance than pure zinc deposits.

    Notes: Abstract Effect of feeding 0.5% curcumin diet or 1% cholesterol diet was examined in albino rats rendered diabetic with streptozotocin injection. Diabetic rats maintained on curcumin diet for 8 weeks excreted comparatively less amounts of albumin, urea, creatinine and inorganic phosphorus. Urinary excretion of the electrolytes sodium and potassium were also significantly lowored under curcumin treatment. Dietary curcumin also partially reversed the abnormalities in plasma albumin, urea, creatinine and inorganic phosphorus in diabetic animals. On the other hand, glucose excretion or the fasting sugar level was unaffected by dietary curcumin and so also the body weights were not improved to any significant extent. Diabetic rats fed curcumin diet had a lowered relative liver weight at the end of the study compared to other diabetic rat groups. Diabetic rats fed a curcumin diet also showed lowered lipid peroxidation in plasma and urine when compared to other diabetic groups. The extent of lipid peroxidation on the other hand, was still higher in cholesterol fed diabetic groups compared to diabetic rats fed with control diet. Thus, the study reveals that curcumin feeding improves the metabolic status in diabetic condition, despite no effect on hyperglycemic status or the body weights. The mechanism by which curcumin improves this situation is probably by virtue of its hypocholesterolemic influence, antioxidant nature and free radical scavenging property.

    Notes: Abstract Streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats were maintained on 0.5% curcumin containing diet for 8 weeks. Blood cholesterol was lowered significantly by dietary curcumin in these diabetic animals. Cholesterol decrease was exclusively from LDL-VLDL fraction. Significant decrease in blood triglyceride and phospholipids was also brought about by dietary curcumin in diabetic rats. In a parallel study, wherein diabetic animals were maintained on a high cholesterol diet, the extents of hypercholesterolemia and phospholipidemia were still higher compared to those maintained on control diet. Curcumin exhibited lowering of cholesterol and phospholipid in these animals also. Liver cholesterol, triglyceride and phospholipid contents were elevated under diabetic conditions. Dietary curcumin showed a distinct tendency to counter these changes in lipid fractions of liver. This effect of curcumin was also seen in diabetic animals maintained on high cholesterol diet. Dietary curcumin also showed significant countering of renal cholesterol and triglycerides elevated in diabetic rats. In order to understand the mechanism of hypocholesterolemic action of dietary curcumin, activities of hepatic cholesterol-7a-hydroxylase and HMG CoA reductase were measured. Hepatic cholesterol-7a-hydroxylase activity was markedly higher in curcumin fed diabetic animals suggesting a higher rate of cholesterol catabolism. (Mol Cell Biochem 166: 169-175, 1997)

Dietary onion also partially reversed the abnormalities in plasma albumin, urea, creatinine and inorganic phosphorus in diabetic animals. Onion also produced a significant reduction in hyperglycemic status of diabetic animals. Diabetic rats maintained on onion diet had a lowered relative liver weight at the end of the study compared to diabetic control group. Diabetic rats fed onion diet also exhibited lowered lipid peroxides in circulation and in urine when compared to diabetic control group. Blood cholesterol was lowered significantly by dietary onion in diabetic animals. Cholesterol decrease was exclusively from LDL-VLDL fraction. Significant decrease in blood phospholipids and tr iglycerides also brought about by dietary onion. Hepatic cholesterol, triglycerides, phospholipids which were elevated under diabetic condition were countered significantly by dietary onion. Dietary capsaicin did not have any significant influence on any of the parameters tested in diabetic rats. Thus, the study reveals that onion feeding improves the metabolic status in diabetic condition, probably because of its hypoglycemic as well as hypocholesterolemic effect.     Notes: Abstract Curcumin, the coloring principle of the commonly used spice turmeric (Curcuma longa) was fed at 0.5% in the diet to streptozotocin-induced diabetic Wistar rats for 8 weeks. Renal damage was assessed by the amount of proteins excreted in the urine and the extent of leaching of renal tubular enzymes: NAG, LDH, AsAT, AlAT, alkaline and acid phosphatases. The integrity of kidney was assessed by measuring the activities of several key enzymes of the renal tissue: glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, glucose-6-phosphatase, and LDH (Carbohydrate metabolism), aldose reductase and sorbitol dehydrogenase (polyol pathway), transaminases, ATPases and membrane PUFA/SFA ratio (membrane integrity). Data on enzymuria, albuminuria, activity of kidney ATPases and fatty acid composition of renal membranes in diabetic condition suggested that dietary curcumin brought about significant beneficial modulation of the progression of renal lesions in diabetes. These findings were also corroborated by histological examination of kidney sections. It is inferred that this beneficial ameliorating influence of dietary curcumin on diabetic nephropathy is possibly mediated through its ability to lower blood cholesterol levels.
