    Notizen: The principles of NMR imaging applicable to materials are reviewed, and examples of current developments given. Among the different types of materials, polymers are particularly suitable for NMR imaging, because they are rich in protons, the most sensitive NMR nucleus. While the spatial resolution in solid materials is restricted to dimensions larger than 50 μm, the interest in NMR as an imaging technique derives from the abundance of parameters, which can be converted to image contrast for localization and identification of material morphology, chemistry and physics. Particular progress has been achieved in imaging of polymer melts and liquids, where diffusion and non-Newtonian flow are investigated as well as of elastomers, where composition, deterioration by thermal and mechanical aging, and stress distribution can be characterized.

    Notizen: The initiating ability of the graphite intercalation compounds (GICs) of SbCl5, FeCl3, and AlBr3 was investigated. It was found that GICs were able to initiate the polymerization of monomers of different types-cyclosiloxanes, 1,2-epoxides, vinyl ethers, lactones, and vinyl monomers. GICs of SbCl5 initiated also the polymerization of tetrahydrofuran. The interaction of the monomers (with the exception of the lactones) caused a size increase of the GICs and deformations in their lamellar structure. Relatively high-molecular poly(vinyl ethers) and polydimethylcyclosiloxanes were obtained. The mechanism of action of GICs was discussed.

    Notizen: The copolymerization of ε-caprolactone (ε-CL) with octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) and styrene (St) under the action of the second-stage potassium graphitide KC24 was investigated. The copolymerizations were carried out in bulk or in xylene at 20°C. The content of the block copolymer ε-CL/D4 in the polymerization mixture was 60-95%, the molecular weight ranging between 150,000 and 300,000. The data for the copolymers' composition obtained by 1H-NMR and GPC showed 14-20% of D4-units in the copolymer. The amount of the block copolymer ε-CL/St in the polymerization products was 0-87%, and the molecular weights in the case of copolymer formation were between 100,000 and 500,000. The content of St-units in the copolymers was from 10 to 75% as shown by GPC and 1H-NMR. The mechanism of action of the initiator is discussed.

    Notizen: The anionic polymerization of δ-valerolactone initiated by KC24 in xylene or tetrahydrofuran was investigated. The influence of the polymerization conditions on the amount and composition of the oligomers fraction and high polymers formed was tested. Experiments were done with a potassium mirror and benzophenone-potassium as initiators of the polymerization to check the influence of the layered structure of the initiator. It was found that the amount of the oligomers formed under comparable conditions increases in the order KC24 (9%), potassium mirror (22%), benzophenone-potassium (56%). The highest yields of poly(δ-valerolactone) (over 90%) and highest intrinsic viscosities (1.0 dL/g and more) were achieved by the KC24-initiated polymerizations in xylene.

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Investigations of Some Three-Component Systems of the Type MeCl2—HCl—H2O (Me = Ni2+, Mn2+, Fe2+)The systems NiCl2—HCl—H2O at 25.0°C, MnCl2—HCl—H2O at 25.0, 40.0 and 50.0°C, and FeCl2—HCl—H2O at 25.0°C are investigated. The dehydrating action of the hydrochloric acid is established on the considered crystal hydrate salts. Vapour pressures on the crystal hydrate salts of the type MeCl2 · nH2O (Me = Ni2+, Mn2+, Fe2+) at 25.0°C are calculated according to the transition points in the phase diagrams and literature data for the water activity of the corresponding binary solutions. The obtained data are in a good agreement with the available literature data.
    Notizen: Die Systeme NiCl2—HCl—H2O sind bei 25,0°C, MnCl2—HCl—H2O bei 25,0, 40,0 und 50,0°C und FeCl2—HCl—H2O bei 25,0°C untersucht worden. Es ist eine Dehydratationswirkung der Salzsäure auf die Salz-Kristallhydrate festgestellt worden. Nach den Übergangspunkten von den Zustandsdiagrammen und nach den Literaturdaten über die Wasseraktivität der entsprechenden binären Lösungen sind die Dampfdrücke des Wassers über den Salz-Kristallhydraten vom Typ MeCl2 · nH2O (Me = Ni2+, Mn2+, Fe2+) bei 25,0°C bestimmt worden. Die gewonnenen Werte sind in sehr guter Übereinstimmung mit den vorhandenen Literaturdaten.

    Beschreibung: Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) aims to maintain circulating drug concentrations at a desired level to optimize clinical outcome. The vast majority of marketed drugs do not require TDM, suggesting the clinical benefit of TDM has not been sufficiently demonstrated in most cases. With the continued emergence and prominence of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) as drugs, especially in inflammation and cancer therapeutic areas, we are at a juncture to consider applicability of TDM for mAbs.

    Beschreibung: 〈span〉〈div〉Abstract〈/div〉Hadean zircons hold the promise of providing a rare window into the crustal development and surface evolution of early Earth. To date, the only known sources of abundant Hadean zircons are sedimentary units in the Jack Hills and Mount Narryer regions of Western Australia. Here we describe a sedimentary layer, termed the Green Sandstone Bed, dated at ca. 3306 Ma, in the Barberton greenstone belt, South Africa, that contains abundant zircons ranging from 3300 to 4100 Ma, many of which predate the oldest known rocks in the greenstone belt at ca. 3550 Ma. This adds to a very small number of known Hadean zircon-bearing localities and is particularly important due to its low degree of thermal metamorphism (lower greenschist facies) and negligible strain. There is a high probability that primary mineral compositions of zircon and other heavy minerals present in this bed are well preserved.〈/span〉

    Beschreibung: 〈span〉〈div〉Abstract〈/div〉Gold deposits are often observed to have complex histories with multiple mineralization and remobilization events. Lead (Pb) isotopes have been useful in identifying the source and timing of metals during the initial or “primary” mineralization in these deposits; however, the source and timing of metals associated with Pb that has more radiogenic isotope ratios as compared to the primary Pb are less definitive. Here, we used Pb isotope analyses, obtained by whole-rock, microdrilled, and in situ sampling techniques, coupled with detailed petrography to identify distinct fluid histories associated with gold mineralization in the Reef Deposit, which occurs in Penokean-age (1.8 Ga) rocks in north-central Wisconsin. Early Pb-rich minerals, encased in pyrite (as is some gold), have nonradiogenic Pb isotope ratios that match the Pb isotope composition of galena from volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits that occur locally north of the Reef Deposit. In contrast, late Pb-rich minerals, intergrown with gold, have highly radiogenic Pb isotope ratios that closely match those of galena from Paleozoic carbonate rocks in the region. A low-temperature brine fluid was found in fluid inclusion assemblages in late crosscutting carbonate veinlets. Based on these data, we infer that initial gold mineralization in the Reef Deposit was produced during the Penokean orogeny (ca. 1.8 Ga) and was subsequently overprinted by fluids similar to Mississippi Valley–type mineralization during the Permian (ca. 270 Ma). This temporal disparity between primary mineralization and remobilization, as identified by Pb isotopes, has important implications for our understanding of gold and other ore deposits. This study should prove useful to guide future Pb isotope investigations in various disciplines.〈/span〉
