Description: Cortical thickness, surface area and volumes vary with age and cognitive function, and in neurological and psychiatric diseases. Here we report heritability, genetic correlations and genome-wide associations of these cortical measures across the whole cortex, and in 34 anatomically predefined regions. Our discovery sample comprises 22,824 individuals from 20 cohorts within the Cohorts for Heart and Aging Research in Genomic Epidemiology (CHARGE) consortium and the UK Biobank. We identify genetic heterogeneity between cortical measures and brain regions, and 160 genome-wide significant associations pointing to wnt/β-catenin, TGF-β and sonic hedgehog pathways. There is enrichment for genes involved in anthropometric traits, hindbrain development, vascular and neurodegenerative disease and psychiatric conditions. These data are a rich resource for studies of the biological mechanisms behind cortical development and aging.

Notes: This paper reviews recent progress in understanding the metal-insulator transition in a system of spin-1/2 interacting electrons in the presence of a non-magnetic random potential. Using results of recent experiments in doped semiconductors, it is argued that the metallic state near the transition can be described by a phenomenological two-fluid model of local moments and itinerant quasiparticles. A mean-field calculation on a disordered Hubbard model which justifies this two fluid model is described. Recent advances in the non-linear sigma model description of the transition are also discussed.

Notes: A field experiment on wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) ev. Shera grown at 120 kg N ha−1 was conducted. Half of the dose of fertilizer N was applied at the pre-sowing stage and the other half when the seedlings were one month old. The leaf blades were examined for their NO3− content and NO3− assimilatory activity at various stages of growth and development. Soil nitrate level at 50 cm depth was determined throughout the wheat growing season in terms of cencentration (μg/ml) and total amount (kg ha−1). The upper leaf blades were examined for their capacity to assimilate NO3−. Highly significant correlation between NR (nitrate reductase) activity and NO3− content in the leaf blades. NR activity and soil NO3−, and between soil NO3− and leaf blade NO3− was observed. Findings on low soil NO3− status during the reproductive phase and the capacity of the upper leaf blades to assimilate additional amounts of NO3−, point to the need for developing a programme of soil fertilizer application whereby all the leaf blades can utilize the NO3− optimally and thus result in greater N harvest.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die 5-Alkyl-5,6-dihydrobenzimidazo[2,1 -h]pteridin-2,4(1H,3H)-dione4 a-d wurden mittels Kondensation von 2-(Alkylaminomethyl)benzimidazolidhydrochloriden1 a–d mit 5-Brombarbitursäure (2) dargestellt.
Notes: Abstract 5-Alkyl-5,6-dihydrobenzimidazo[2,1 -h]pteridine-2,4(1H,3H)-diones (4 a–d) have been synthesised by the condensation of 2-(alkyl-aminomethyl)benzimidazole dihydrochloride (1 a–d) with 5-bromobarbituric acid (2). Similarly, 5-alkyl-5,6-dihydro-4 a-nitrobenzimidazo[2,1 -h] pteridine-2,4(3H,4aH)-diones (10 a–d) have also been synthesised by the condensation of1 a–d with 5-bromo-5-nitrobarbituric acid (8) followed by cyclisation of the intermediate 5-[(benzimidazol-2-ylmethyl)alkylamino]-5-nitrobarbituric acid (9 a–d) with 5% NaOH. Thermal cyclisation of the intermediates9 a–d have also been studied. Methylation of the compound10 a has been carried out with CH3I and K2CO3 usingD M F as solvent to confirm cyclisation. The structures are supported by elemental analyses, IR and PMR spectra.

Notes: Abstract The constraints on the scaling properties of conserved charge densities in the vicinity of a zero temperature (T), second-order quantum phase transition are studied. We introduce a generalized Wilson ratio, characterizing the nonlinear response to an external field,H, coupling to any conserved charge, and argue that it is a completely universal function ofH/T: this is illustrated by computations on model systems. We also note implications for transitions where the order parameter is a conserved charge (as in aT=0 ferromagnet-paramagnet transition).

Notes: Abstract Exact multinomial solutions of the beach equation for shallow water waves on a uniformly sloping beach are found and related to solution of the same equation found earlier by other investigators, using integral transform techniques. The use of these solutions for a general initialvalue problem for the equation under investigation is briefly discussed.

Notes: Abstract The collapse of a spherical (cylindrical) cavity in air is studied analytically. The global solution for the entire domain between the sound front, separating the undisturbed and the disturbed gas, and the vacuum front is constructed in the form of infinite series in time with coefficients depending on an “appropriate” similarity variable. At timet=0+, the exact planar solution for a uniformly moving cavity is assumed to hold. The global analytic solution of this initial boundary value problem is found until the collapse time (=(γ−1)/2) for γ ≤ 1+(2/(1+v)), wherev=1 for cylindrical geometry, andv=2 for spherical geometry. For higher values of γ, the solution series diverge at timet — 2(β−1)/ (v(1+β)+(1−β)2) where β=2/(γ−1). A close agreement is found in the prediction of qualitative features of analytic solution and numerical results of Thomaset al. [1].
