Notes: Abstract Ultrashort laser pulses offer new jump in information and communication technology. Especially semiconductor laser based ultrafast photonic devices and systems are promising. We review our new approaches for femtosecond pulse generation, and thin film technology for broad band semiconductor optical amplifiers.

Notes: Abstract. The effects of direct Coulomb and exchange interactions on spin states are studied for quantum dots contained in circular and rectangular mesas. For a circular mesa a spin-triplet favored by these interactions is observed at zero and nonzero magnetic fields. We tune and measure the relative strengths of these interactions as a function of the number of confined electrons. We find that electrons tend to have parallel spins when they occupy nearly degenerate single-particle states. We use a magnetic field to adjust the single-particle state degeneracy, and find that the spin-configurations in an arbitrary magnetic field are well explained in terms of two-electron singlet and triplet states. For a rectangular mesa we observe no signatures of the spin-triplet at zero magnetic field. Due to the anisotropy in the lateral confinement single-particle state degeneracy present in the circular mesa is lifted, and Coulomb interactions become weak. We evaluate the degree of the anisotropy by measuring the magnetic field dependence of the energy spectrum for the ground and excited states, and find that at zero magnetic field the spin-singlet is more significantly favored by the lifting of level degeneracy than by the reduction in the Coulomb interaction. We also find that the spin-triplet is recovered by adjusting the level degeneracy with magnetic field.

Notes: Abstract  Disposable-type microbial sensors were prepared for the determination of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD). The yeast, Trichosporon cutaneum, was directly immobilized on the surface of miniature oxygen electrodes using an ultraviolet crosslinking resin (ENT-3400). The oxygen electrodes (15 mm× 2 mm×0.4 mm) were made on silicon substrates using micromachining techniques. They were Clark-type two-electrode systems with−1021 mV applied to the working electrode. Typical response times of the BOD sensors were in the range of 7–20 min. At 20°C, the sensors’ dynamic range was from 0 to 18 mg/l BOD when a glucose/glutamate BOD standard solution was used. The lower limit of detection was 0.2 mg/l BOD. This value was one order of magnitude lower than that of sensors previously reported. The sensors’ operational lifetime of 3 days was satisfactory for a disposable type. The sensors’ responses were reproducible to within 8% relative standard deviation. The BOD sensors’ were applied to untreated and treated waste waters from industrial effluents and municipal sewage. BOD values determined using these sensors correlated well with those determined by the conventional 5-day BOD determination method.

Notes: Summary Demineralized bovine bone powder was reduced with NaB3H4 to label the collagen crosslinks with tritium. The powder was enclosed in small nylon mesh pouches and implanted subcutaneously into rats for 3 weeks. Histological examinations revealed that multinuclear giant cells accumulated around the bone matrix, some in Howship's lacunae. Collagenous peptides containing intermolecular crosslinks were detected in the urea-soluble fraction extracted from the implant. Two crosslink-containing peptides were isolated from a dialyzable fraction: one contained dihydroxylysinonorleucine and the other hydroxylysinonorleucine. Both peptides had molecular weights of approximately 1000 estimated from the elution positions of gel filtration chromatography; and both had similar quantitative compositions of amino acids. There were no homologous peptides detected in a control experiment of the reduced bone matrix which was incubated in vitro with buffered saline for 1 week at 37°C.

Notes: Abstract A study was undertaken to ascertain whether vitamin D has a direct action on the mineralization of the dentin in rats made rachitic by a diet low in calcium and deficient in vitamin D. Physiological amounts of vitamin D, given orally to rachitic rats, increased their serum calcium from 4.8±0.5 mg/100 ml to 7.5±0.4 mg/100ml. The mineralization of dentin recovered markedly, although osteoporosis occurred in bone trabeculae. The results suggest that vitamin D increases serum calcium by accelerating bone resorption and that the increased serum calcium level acts directly to mineralize the dentin. When calcium was given to rachitic rats by subcutaneous injection, the serum calcium level increased and mineralization of dentin recovered to the same extent as that observed in rats given vitamin D. These results indicate that recovery of mineralization of rachitic dentin depends primarily on recovery of the serum calcium level and that vitamin D is an indirect factor in the mineralization process.

Notes: Abstract The gene encoding Clara cell-derived inflammatory molecule CC16 has been cited as a candidate gene for atopic asthma on chromosome 11q13. A genetic association study was performed with variants of the CC16 gene on chromosome 11q13 in relation to asthma in British (n=275) and Japanese (n=300) populations. No significant association was found between asthma and CC16 genotypes, irrespective of atopic status in these two populations. These data suggest that CC16 might not be the major locus for asthma on 11q13.

Notes: Abstract  The cation distribution of Co, Ni, and Zn between the M1 and M2 sites of a synthetic olivine was determined with a single-crystal diffraction method. The crystal data are (Co0.377Ni0.396Zn0.227)2SiO4, M r  = 212.692, orthorhombic, Pbnm, a = 475.64(3), b = 1022.83(8), and c = 596.96(6) pm, V = 0.2904(1) nm3, Z = 4, D x  = 4.864 g cm−3, and F(0 0 0) = 408.62. Lattice, positional, and thermal parameters were determined with MoKα radiation; R = 0.025 for 1487 symmetry-independent reflections with F 〉 4σ(F). The site occupancies of Co, Ni, and Zn were determined with synchrotron radiation employing the anomalous dispersion effect of Co and Ni. The synchrotron radiation data include two sets of intensity data collected at 161.57 and 149.81 pm, which are about 1 pm longer than Co and Ni absorption edges, respectively. The R value was 0.022 for Co K edge data with 174 independent reflections, and 0.034 for Ni K edge data with 169 reflections. The occupancies are 0.334Co + 0.539Ni + 0.127Zn in the M1 sites, and 0.420Co + 0.253Ni + 0.327Zn in the M2 sites. The compilation of the cation distributions in olivines shows that the distributions depend on ionic radii and electronegativities of constituent cations, and that the partition coefficient can be estimated from the equation: ln [(A/B)M1/(A/B)M2] = −0.272 (IR A -IR B ) + 3.65 (EN A −EN B ), where IR (pm) and EN are ionic radius and electronegativity, respectively.
