Notizen: Colossal magnetoresistive La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 thin films have been grown under tensile strains on (100)-SrTiO3 substrates and compressive strains on (100)-LaAlO3 and (110)-NdGaO3 substrates by pulsed laser deposition. Using magnetic force microscopy (MFM), a "feather-like" magnetic pattern, characteristic of films with an in-plane magnetization, is observed for films deposited on both SrTiO3 and NdGaO3 while a "bubble" magnetic pattern, typical of films with an out-of-plane magnetization, is recorded for LaAlO3. We show that the shape of the magnetic pattern imaged by MFM is fully correlated to the easy direction of the magnetization in the film. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Beschreibung: Author(s): O. Gladii, M. Haidar, Y. Henry, M. Kostylev, and M. Bailleul One of the most peculiar properties of spin waves in magnetic thin films is nonreciprocal wave propagation, i.e., a dependence of the wave properties on the propagation direction. The authors study this effect in permalloy films of thickness varying from 6 to 40 nm and find that the difference in the frequencies can reach several tens of MHz. The authors show that this frequency nonreciprocity is mainly caused by asymmetric magnetic anisotropies at the two surfaces of the ferromagnetic film. This result is important to understand recent works on the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, an unconventional chiral magnetic interaction that generates a similar frequency nonreciprocity. The authors demonstrate that while these contributions usually occur at the same time, the two can be distinguished via the difference in their dependence on the film thickness. [Phys. Rev. Beschreibung: The periodic stripes and spots that often adorn animals’ coats have been largely viewed as self-organizing patterns, forming through dynamics such as Turing’s reaction-diffusion within the developing skin. Whether preexisting positional information also contributes to the periodicity and orientation of these patterns has, however, remained unclear. We used natural variation in colored stripes of juvenile galliform birds to show that stripes form in a two-step process. Autonomous signaling from the somite sets stripe position by forming a composite prepattern marked by the expression profile of agouti . Subsequently, agouti regulates stripe width through dose-dependent control of local pigment production. These results reveal that early developmental landmarks can shape periodic patterns upstream of late local dynamics, and thus constrain their evolution.

Beschreibung: We investigate the effect of an electrical current on the attenuation length of a 900 nm wavelength spin-wave in a permalloy/Pt bilayer using propagating spin-wave spectroscopy. The modification of the spin-wave relaxation rate is linear in current density, reaching up to 14% for a current density of 2.3 × 10 11  A/m 2 in Pt. This change is attributed to the spin transfer torque induced by the spin Hall effect and corresponds to an effective spin Hall angle of 0.13, which is among the highest values reported so far. The spin Hall effect thus appears as an efficient way of amplifying/attenuating propagating spin waves.

Beschreibung: Spin transfer appears to be a promising tool for improving spintronics devices. Experiments that quantitatively access the magnitude of the spin transfer are required for a fundamental understanding of this phenomenon. By inductively measuring spin waves propagating along a permalloy strip subjected to a large electrical current, we observed a current-induced spin wave Doppler shift that we relate to the adiabatic spin transfer torque. Because spin waves provide a well-defined system for performing spin transfer, we anticipate that they could be used as an accurate probe of spin-polarized transport in various itinerant ferromagnets.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Vlaminck, Vincent -- Bailleul, Matthieu -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2008 Oct 17;322(5900):410-3. doi: 10.1126/science.1162843.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Institut de Physique et Chimie des Materiaux de Strasbourg, UMR 7504 CNRS-Universite Louis Pasteur, 23 Rue du Loess, 67034 Strasbourg Cedex 2, France.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18927387" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Beschreibung: The magnetic anisotropy of an ultradense array of crystalline cobalt nanowires is investigated by means of broadband ferromagnetic resonance and magnetic torque measurements. The array is grown epitaxially in solution on a Pt(111) film and consists of single crystalline metallic wires with a diameter of 6.2 nm and a center-to-center interwire distance of 9.6 nm. The shape anisotropy and the Co hexagonal compact structure with the c-axis along the wire axis combine with each other to impose a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy despite the high density of 8 × 10 12 wires/in. 2 . The intrinsic uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy constants K 1 and K 2 are extracted from the ferromagnetic resonance and torque measurements using a mean field approach accounting for the interwire dipolar interactions. At room temperature, and despite air exposure, an unexpected increase of K 1 and K 2 of more than 40% with respect to the bulk is evidenced.
