    Description: First-principles density functional theory (DFT) is used to investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of Sr 4 Rh 3 O 10 , a member of the Ruddlesden-Popper series. Based on the DFT calculations taking into account the co-operative effect of Coulomb interaction ( U ) and spin-orbit couplings (SOC), Sr 4 Rh 3 O 10 is found to be a half metallic ferromagnet (HMF) with total magnetic moment μ tot  = 12  μ B per unit cell. The material has almost 100% spin-polarization at the Fermi level despite of sizable SOC. Replacement of Rh atom by the isovalent Co atom is considered. Upon full-replacement of Co, a low-spin to intermediate spin transition happens resulting in a HMF state with the total magnetic moment three-time larger (i.e., μ tot  = 36  μ B per unit cell), compared to Sr 4 Rh 3 O 10 . We propose Sr 4 Rh 3 O 10 and Sr 4 Co 3 O 10 as candidates of half metals.

    Description: Human visual recognition processes are remarkably robust and can function effectively even under highly degraded viewing conditions. Contextual information may play a critical role in such circumstances. Here, we provide neurophysiological evidence that contextual cues can elicit object-specific neural responses, which have hitherto been believed to be based on intrinsic cues alone. Specifically, we find that the "fusiform face area" (FFA) maintains its selectivity for faces without regard to whether the faces are defined intrinsically or contextually.     Description: The need of lead-free high performance ceramics with large electrostrictive effect, minimum hysteresis loss and energy storage ability at room temperature has become indispensable. At room temperature one of the key challenges in ceramic materials is to enhance the electrostrictive and energy storage properties simultaneously. In this regards, lead-free gadolinium modified barium zirconate titanate (Ba 1-x Gd 2x/3 )(Zr 0.3 Ti 0.7 )O 3 (x = 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08, 0.10) ceramic was experimentally investigated to gain the competent electromechanical parameters near room temperature. Dielectric measurements exhibit a diffuse type of phase transition of relaxor phenomena and slim hysteresis loop with low remnant polarization and low hysteresis loss were observed. A moderate electric field of 30 kV/cm, recoverable energy and storage efficiency increases with Gd content. Strain-electric field hysteresis curves such as S-E , S-E 2 , and S-P 2 profiles indicate improved electrostrictive characteristic of the ceramics. Results show that a maximum strain S  ∼ 0.083% with large electrostrictive coefficient Q 11  ∼ 0.054 m 4 /C 2 and M 11  ∼ 0.142 × 10 −16 m 2 /V 2 were obtained for x = 0.02 based BGdZT composition near relaxor-paraelectric phase boundary. The behavior of electrostrictive effect and energy storage efficiency suggested new possibilities of high precision lead-free ceramic actuator in a moderate field.

    Description: The magnetodielectric response of a double perovskite oxide Lu 2 NiMnO 6 (LNMO) synthesised by the sol–gel process has been investigated. The Rietveld refinement of the X-ray diffraction data indicates that the room-temperature crystal structure of LNMO is monoclinic with the space group P2 1 /n, which contains an ordered array of alternate MnO 6 and NiO 6 octahedra. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies confirm the mix valence state of Mn (4+ and 3+) and Ni (2+ and 3+). The optical band gap (E g  = 1.56 eV) obtained from the UV-Visible absorption spectrum suggests that LNMO is a semiconductor. The field cooled and zero-field cooled measurements show the ferromagnetic behaviour of the sample with the transition temperature (T c ) = 45 K and a saturation magnetization of 5.2 μ B /f.u. is observed at 2.5 K. The temperature and frequency dependent dielectric measurements reveal colossal values of the dielectric constant, which are interpreted by the Maxwell-Wagner interfacial polarization. The temperature dependence of the bulk dc conductivity indicates a variable-range-hopping mechanism. The saturation polarization value is estimated to be 232  μ C/m 2 from the pyroelectric current measurement. A negative magnetodielectric effect of 1% is observed at the paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition temperature. The electronic structure calculations based on density functional theory have been performed to analyse the magnetic properties of LNMO.

    Description: We describe and show results from a series of field campaigns that used balloonborne instruments launched from India and Saudi Arabia during the summers 2014–17 to study the nature, formation, and impacts of the Asian Tropopause Aerosol Layer (ATAL). The campaign goals were to i) characterize the optical, physical, and chemical properties of the ATAL; ii) assess its impacts on water vapor and ozone; and iii) understand the role of convection in its formation. To address these objectives, we launched 68 balloons from four locations, one in Saudi Arabia and three in India, with payload weights ranging from 1.5 to 50 kg. We measured meteorological parameters; ozone; water vapor; and aerosol backscatter, concentration, volatility, and composition in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS) region. We found peaks in aerosol concentrations of up to 25 cm–3 for radii 〉 94 nm, associated with a scattering ratio at 940 nm of ∼1.9 near the cold-point tropopause. During medium-duration balloon flights near the tropopause, we collected aerosols and found, after offline ion chromatography analysis, the dominant presence of nitrate ions with a concentration of about 100 ng m–3. Deep convection was found to influence aerosol loadings 1 km above the cold-point tropopause. The Balloon Measurements of the Asian Tropopause Aerosol Layer (BATAL) project will continue for the next 3–4 years, and the results gathered will be used to formulate a future National Aeronautics and Space Administration–Indian Space Research Organisation (NASA–ISRO) airborne campaign with NASA high-altitude aircraft.
