    Description: By separating the test sample of Haruna pumice at 300°C, the ferromagnetic mineral grains showing self-reversal of thermo-remanent magnetism (Reverse T.R.M.) (1) were classified into three types A, AB and B. The measurement of Js-T curve and T.R.M. characteristics of each type revealed that the sole component responsible for Reverse T.R.M. is the grains AB, each of which containing both of the constituents of types A and B in itself. It was concluded that the appearance of Reverse T.R.M. is a result of magnetic interaction between magnetic domains of the constituents A and B in the grains of type AB during cooling under a weak magnetic field. © 1952, Society of Geomagnetism and Earth, Planetary and Space Sciences.     Description: Besides the dacitic pumice of Mt. Haruna, an igneous rock having the tendency of self-reversal of thermo-remanent magnetization has been found in a pitchstone of Mt. Asio. Although the self-reversal property of the Asio ferromagnetic minerals is weaker than that of the Haruna ferromagnetic minerals, the magnetic and crystallographic properties of the former are fundamentally same as those of the latter. By thermo-magnetic separation, an ensemble of ferromagnetic grains in both the Haruna and the Asio rocks were divided into A, B and AB groups. The results of thermo-magnetic measurement, chemical analysis, and X-ray analysis of these three groups showed that the A-constituent is a titanomagnetite of the crystal structure of inverse spinel type having the Curie-point at 430°-510°C, and the B-constituent is an ilmenite-hematite solid-solution of the rhombohedral crystal structure having the Curie-point at about 230°C, while the AB grains are composed of both A- and the B-constituents. The measurement of thermo-remanent magnetization of a large number of single grain gave the result that only the AB grains can have the reverse thermo-remanent magnetization, the A- and the B- grains getting the ordinary normal thermo-remanent magnetization. © 1953, Society of Geomagnetism and Earth, Planetary and Space Sciences.     Description: The magnetic susceptibility of several olivines, xFe2SiO4⋅(1-x)Mg2SiO4 with varying x has been measured. The results showed that the olivines are paramagnetic and that their molecular magnetic susceptibility χmol can be expressed empirically by χmol=2 × 10-2emn/mol at the room temperature. Using the accepted values of the Bohr magneton number of Fe+2 ion, and assuming that the Fe+2 ions are embedded isolatedly in the crystal, the paramagnetic susceptibility of olivines at the room temperature can be calculated as χmol=2.2x∼2.6x×10-2emn/mol, provided that the other constituents such as Mg+2 and SiO4 are only diamagnetic. The comparison of the empirical and the calculated values seems to justify the above simple calculation.     Description: Palaeomagnetic studies have been conducted of the volcanic rocks in the North-Izu and Hakone volcanic region, Japan, where complete succession of lavas has been determined by one of us (H. K.). By sampling 4~7 oriented rock specimens at each of 57 sites, the period from the very beginning of the Pleistocene to Holocene has been covered. The maximum time interval between two consecutive samples may probably be not more than several tens of thousand years except that between two samples of middle to younger Pleistocene when the volcanic activity did not occur within the region concerned. Care was taken not to use the rock samples of which natural remanent magnetization may have suffered from any significant disturbances, geolgically, chemically, magnetically or otherwise. Selection of proper samples was performed according to the criteria for the stability of remanent magnetization proposed by us previously (Journ. Geomag. Geoelec., 6, No. 4, 1955). The major findings obtained through the present study are : 1) During the whole Quaternary age, the geomagnetic centred dipole has been fluctuating around an axis of which north pole wandered from 72°N, 86°E to 81°N, 32°W. 2) The direction of polarization of the centred dipole was reversed at a time in the earliest Quaternary, namely during the middle period of the formation of the Usami volcano. © 1957, Society of Geomagnetism and Earth, Planetary and Space Sciences.     Description: From the present knowledge on the magnetism of rocks, palaeomagnetic study by means of the natural remanent magnetization of igneous rocks is reliable when and only when the natural remanent magnetization is ascertained to be the thermo-remanent magnetization acquired at the time of the rocks' formation. The authors propose, in this paper, several experimental methods for examining whether a given natural remanent magnetization can have definite palaeomagnetic significance or not, under the above mentioned criterion. In short, the proposed set of testing methods comprises: thermo-magnetic, crystallographic and chemical analyses of the ferromagnetic minerals contained in the rock, and the comparison of the stabilities of the natural remanent magnetization and of the thermo-remanent magnetization, produced in laboratory, against the demagnetizing processes by heating in non-magnetic space and by applying an alternating magnetic field. These proposed tests were actually carried out on several naturally adversely magnetized rocks found mainly in Japan. For three of them, including Dr. Hospers' Icelandic rock, it was concluded that their reverse natural remanence must have been brought about by the reversed earth's magnetic field at the times of their formation. As to the Haruna type of the self-reversal of the thermoremanent magnetization, the two-constituent mechanism was investigated in detail with the aid of electron-microscopic observation on the intergrowth of the two constituents. © 1954, Society of Geomagnetism and Earth, Planetary and Space Sciences.
