    Description: The first stage of the trial in L'Aquila (Italy) ended with a conviction of seven experts, convened by the head of Civil Protection on 31 March 2009, for multiple manslaughter and serious injuries. They were sentenced to six years in jail, perpetual interdiction from public office and a fine of several million euros to be paid to the victims of the earthquake of 6 April 2009 (moment magnitude 6.3) for having caused, by their negligent conduct, the death of 29 persons and the injury of several others. The verdict had a tremendous impact on the scientific community and on the way scientists deliver their expert opinions to decision makers and society. This paper analyses the scientific argumentations reported in the Verdict Motivations, where scientific data and results were largely debated and misused to demonstrate that they should have been considered as a tool to predict an impending large earthquake. Moreover, we show that the supposed message of reassurance was not generated at the experts’ meeting or by the official Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia reports. The media had a key role in conveying information during the seismic swarm, contributing to the risk perception. We stress that prevention actions based on seismic hazard knowledge are the best defence against earthquakes.

    Description: We analyze the broadband recordings from a borehole station installed in the bedrock underneath the Po basin (Northern Italy) and from a second station temporarily deployed on the surface at the same site to determine the surface sedimentary layer response and test the robustness of the different empirical techniques used to estimate local site effects. We investigate the site amplification by evaluating the surface-to-downhole spectral ratios and the horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratios on both weak-motion events and microtremors. All the different empirical methods, except the horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratios on weak motions, reveal the main amplification peak at about 0.8 Hz, although the amplification factors are not always in agreement; the 0.8 Hz peak is the fundamental mode of the site, due to the upper 130-m Quaternary alluvium column (V (sub s) approximately 300 m/sec). We compare these experimental spectral functions with the theoretical 1D site response including and not including the borehole site response: first we evaluate the theoretical transfer function at the surface then at depth and take the smoothed ratio. The shallow velocity and attenuation structure at this site is assumed from previous studies. We attempt to account for the effect of the reflected wave field in the borehole recordings in two different ways: first we include the reflected wave field in the theoretical response function taking the theoretical transfer function's ratio (Hst/Hbt) and comparing it to the experimental earthquake ratios of horizontal components recorded at surface and at depth (Hs/Hb). Alternatively we multiply the Hs/Hb earthquake ratio by the coherence and compare it to the surface response function. This second approach does not provide a good fit to the amplitude of model response, even if the shape of the ratio is in agreement with the theoretic response, suggesting that multiplying by the coherence is not a good way to correct for the effect of reflected phases. To further understand the goodness of our theoretical 1D model (Hst/Hbt theoretical evaluations), we simulate the propagation through the shallower soil structure of the seismic waveforms recorded by the borehole sensor for a couple of events, obtaining reasonably good agreement with the surface time histories both in phase and amplitude. This test site and the results of this study are useful for understanding the influence of sedimentary layers on the ground shaking in the Po basin, the largest and most populated alluvial basin in Italy.

    Description: SKS splitting at the Calabrian subduction zone, with delay times (δt) up to 3s, reveals the presence of a strong anisotropic fabric. Fast directions (ϕ) are oriented NNE-SSW in the Calabrian Arc (C.A.) and rotate NNW-SSE to the north following the arcuate shape of the subducting plate. We interpret the trench-parallel ϕ as local-scale mantle flow driven by the retrograde motion of the slab; the absence of trench perpendicular ϕ below the Southern Apennines (S.A.) excludes the presence of a seismically detectable return flow at its NE edge. This may be due to the relative youth and limited width of the S.A. slab tear. A possible return flow is identified farther north at the boundary of the S.A. and Central Apennines. Different and weaker anisotropy is present below the Apulian Platform (A.P.). This implies that the influence of the slab rollback in the sub-slab mantle is limited to less then 100 km from the slab.

    Description: Surface waves from the great Sumatra-Andaman earthquakes of 2004 and 2005 that cross Italy south of 44 N display Love-to-Rayleigh scattered waves (quasi- Love phases) diagnostic of sharp lateral gradients in the anisotropic properties of Earth’s upper mantle. Surface waves that traverse Italy further north lack this distinctive phase, documenting a change in the upper mantle fabric that is corroborated by a shift in the fast polarization of shear wave birefringence. These observations suggest that orogen-parallel asthenospheric extension behind the retreating Apennines slab has limited geographical expression. We hypothesize that subduction rollback currently terminates at 44 N, while the upper mantle flow pattern further to the north has been recently rearranged.

    Description: We estimated SKS splitting parameters for 18 earthquakes observed over 2 years on a dense linear seismometer array crossing the Apennines orogen (Northern Italy). An abrupt (within 30 km) change in fast polarization occurs near the crest of the Apennines. Southwest of the crest, fast polarization parallels the Apennines strike (WNW–ESE), rotating to EW orientation near the Tyrrhenian Sea. Northeast of the crest, toward the Po Plain, fast polarization is NNE–SSW, roughly normal to the orogen’s strike. Delay times (0.6–2.9s) do not show a remarkable pattern. Splitting parameters beneath the Apennines argue against anisotropy restricted to the crust, and suggest that the mantle region deformed by Apennines slab rollback is spatially limited. We hypothesize that the rollback process has been uneven, evolving to a contortion of the northern edge of the Apennines slab, and perhaps incipient detachment. Lithospheric anisotropy beneath the Po-Plain may also be significant.

    Description: A long sequence of moderate-magnitude earthquakes (5 M 6) struck central Italy in September and October 1997. At the end of the sequence a year later, the seismogenic area extends for about 60 km along the Apennines. The analysis of historical seismicity suggests that this seismic sequence filled a 700-year gap in this portion of the chain. Other historical sequences in the same area are characterized by prolonged seismic release on adjacent fault segments, probably due to the involvement of shallow and complex structures inherited by the compressive tectonics. The distribution of seismicity and the fault-plane solutions show that the extension in this region is accomplished by normal faults dipping at relatively low angles ( 40 ) to the southwest. The focal mechanisms of the largest shocks reveal normal faulting with extension perpendicular to the Apenninic chain (northeast–southwest), consistently with the Quaternary tectonics of the internal sector of the northern Apennine belt and with previous earthquakes in adjacent regions. Three mainshocks occurred on distinct 5- to 10-km-long fault segments, adjacent and slightly offset between each other. High-quality aftershock locations show that seismicity is confined within the sedimentary Mesozoic cover in the upper 8 km of the crust and that most of the aftershocks are shallower than the largest shocks, which nucleated at 6-km depth. Faults evidenced by aftershock locations have a planar geometry and show increased complexity toward the surface. Most of the aftershock focal mechanisms are dominated by normal faulting. Several strike-slip events occurred at shallow depths, reactivating portions of pre-existing thrust planes that segment the normal fault system. The spatiotemporal evolution of seismicity shows a peculiar migration of hypocenters along the strike of the main faults with multiple ruptures and the activation of fault segments before the occurrence of the main rupture episodes.

    Description: We document quantitatively observations of quasi-Love waves obtained at permanent (Italian National Seismic Network) and temporary seismic stations deployed in Italy between 2003 and 2006 (Retreat, CAT/SCAN projects). We analyzed large earthquakes with source parameters that favor quasi-Love wave generation within this time-span, including the Sumatra–Andaman earthquake of 12/26/04. The presence or the absence of the quasi-Love phase is compared to the smoothed anisotropic pattern defined by the numerous SKS splitting measurements obtained in peninsular Italy, and to the Italian upper mantle structure as defined by seismic tomography. The large-scale anisotropic features, responsible for shear-wave splitting and documented also by Pn and surface-wave anisotropy, generally display the correct geometry to explain the scattered quasi-Love waves. Quasi-Love observations do not demand a tilted-axis anisotropic geometry. We argue instead for anisotropy with laterally-variable horizontal symmetry axis in the upper mantle below the Italian peninsula.

    Description: An automatic analysis code called ANISOMAT+ has been developed and improved to automatically retrieve the crustal anisotropic parameters fast polarization direction (ϕ) and delay time (δt) related to the shear wave splitting phenomena affecting seismic S-wave. The code is composed of a set of MatLab scripts and functions able to evaluate the anisotropic parameters from the three-component seismic recordings of local earthquakes using the cross-correlation method. Because the aim of the code is to achieve a fully automatic evaluation of anisotropic parameters, during the development of the code we focus our attention to devise several automatic checks intended to guarantee the quality and the stability of the results obtained. The basic idea behind the development of this automatic code is to build a tool able to work on a huge amount of data in a short time, obtaining stable results and minimizing the errors due to the subjectivity. These behaviors, coupled to a three component digital seismic network and a monitoring system that performs automatic pickings and locations, are required to develop a real-time monitoring of the anisotropic parameters.

    Description: Competing geodynamic scenarios proposed for northern Apennines (Italy) make very different predictions for the orientation of strain in the upper mantle. Constraints on the pattern are offered by observations of seismic anisotropy. Previous study of the anisotropy beneath the northern Apennines used birefringence of core-refracted shear waves (SKS phases), and demonstrated the presence of two domains: Tuscan and Adria. In the transition between the two domains, across the Apennines orogen, anisotropy measurements reflect a complex deep structure. To define better the upper-mantle structure beneath this area we analyze seismological data recorded by a set of seismic stations that operated for 3 years, between 2003 and 2006, located in the outer part of the Apennines belt, in the Adria terrane, collected by the RETREAT Project. Directionally distributed sets of SKS records were inverted for layered anisotropic structures with a well-tested method, adding new results to previous hypotheses for this area. New data analysis argues for two-layer anisotropy for sites located on the Apennines wedge and also one site in the Tuscan terrane. Beneath the wedge an upper layer with nearly north-south fast polarization pervades the lithospheric mantle, while at depth a nearly NW–SE Apennines-parallel direction is present in the lower layer. Beneath Tuscany a shallower NW–SE direction and a deeper E–W one suggest the deeper strain from active slab retreat, with a mantle-wedge circulation (i.e. an east–west corner flow), overlain by an Apennines-parallel fast polarization that could be a remnant of lower-crust deformation.

    Description: Starting from late May 2012, the Emilia region (Northern Italy) was severely shaken by an intense seismic sequence, originated from a ML 5.9 earthquake on May 20th, at a hypocentral depth of 6.3 km, with thrusttype focal mechanism. In the following days, the seismic rate remained high, counting 50 ML ≥ 2.0 earthquakes a day, on average. Seismicity spreads along a 30 km east–west elongated area, in the Po river alluvial plain, in the nearby of the cities Ferrara and Modena. Nine days after the first shock, another destructive thrust-type earthquake (ML 5.8) hit the area to the west, causing further damage and fatalities. Aftershocks following this second destructive event extended along the same east-westerly trend for further 20 km to the west, thus illuminating an area of about 50 km in length, on thewhole. After the first shock struck, on May 20th, a dense network of temporary seismic stations, in addition to the permanent ones, was deployed in the meizoseismal area, leading to a sensible improvement of the earthquake monitoring capability there. A combined dataset, including threecomponent seismic waveforms recorded by both permanent and temporary stations, has been analyzed in order to obtain an appropriate 1-D velocity model for earthquake location in the study area. Here we describe the main seismological characteristics of this seismic sequence and, relying on refined earthquakes location, we make inferences on the geometry of the thrust system responsible for the two strongest shocks.
