Notes: Liquid crystalline triblock copolymers with LC inner block and amorphous outer blocks have been synthesized by “living” anionic polymerization and investigated using DSC, TEM, and small-angle x-ray diffraction. All samples of poly[styrene-block-2-(3-cholesteryloxycarbonyloxy) ethyl methacrylate-block-styrene] (PS-b-PChEMA-b-PS) show liquid crystalline behavior and phase separation between the blocks. Compared to triblock copolymers with PS inner block (PChEMA-b-PS-b-PChEMA) and diblock copolymers (PS-b-PChEMA) the LC block copolymers with PS outer blocks have the same properties. The LC behavior and the morphology do not depend on the block arrangement; they are only influenced by the volume fractions of the blocks. Those samples in which the liquid crystalline subphase is not continuous (spheres) only a nematic phase was found, whereas in all samples with a continuous liquid crystalline subphase, the smectic A phase of the homopolymer was observed. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Trichlormethanes 4 react with two equivalents of n-alkyl isocyanates R2-NCO in the presence of SbCl5 to furnish the 2,2-dichloro-5,6-dihydro-6-oxo2H-1,3,5-oxadiazinium salts (9). The structure of these heterocycles is confirmed by an X-ray analysis of 9d (R1 = ClC = CCl2, R2 = Et). p-Tolyl isocyanate is Friedel-Crafts alkylated by 4b in the presence of SbCl5. Subsequent ring closure affords the quinolinium salt 13, which is hydrolyzed to give inter alia the quinolone 16.

Description / Table of Contents: 15 years of German corrosion research in the research programme corrosion of the Federal Republic of Germany  -  Part IThe author presents a review of results obtained since 1957 in connection with the research work carried out within this programme. The programme included 122 projects financially supported (13 Millions DM) by the Federal Ministry of Economics. The work was concerned with the general corrosion of metals, corrosion by semiconductor mechanisms, pitting, contact corrosion, corrosion by hot gases (metals and nonmetals); stress corrosion cracking (metals and plastics), fretting corrosion, erosion, the influence of various parameters (flow velocity pressure, UV radiation, pollution of the medium, boundary phase condition, deformation, alloying elements) and the alteration by corrosion of materials properties.

Description / Table of Contents: 15 Years of German corrosion research in the research programme corrosion of the Federal Republic of Germany  -  Part IIThe second part of this report (Pt. I se WuK 24 [1973] 6; 525-535) deals in particular with the possibilities of corrosion protection, and in particular inhibitors, electrochemical methods (cathodic protection), electrolytically deposited metal coatings (including the feasibility of influencing their properties by galvanizing conditons), sprayed and vacuum deposited coatings non-metallic inorganic coatings (passivating layers such as anodizing etc., as well as their preparation mechanisms) and organic coatings. A concluding part deals with test methods, on the one hand methods to test the corrosion behaviour of materials in various media and under various conditions on the other hand methods to test the efficiency of various corrosion protection methods. 434 ref.
Notes: As to the modes of inhibiting electrode processes, it belongs to the present tasks of the Working Party “Inhibitors” of the European Federation Corrosion first to elaborate valid formulations in definition, nomenclature and classification and second to present a review on methodology for investigating inhibition experimentally. The author is offering contributions to these themes for discussion. Regarding the international character of the European Federation, these contributions were written in English. In the following part I, inhibition of electrode reactions is defined and classified in1Interface inhibition2Electrolyte-layer inhibition3Membrane-inhibition4Passivation.Different modes of covering the interface are leading to interface inhibition: Desactivating, indifferent or reactive coverage. Peculiarities in the interface inhibition of electrolytical metal deposition and dissolution are discussed. Electrolyte-layer inhibition is subdivided in a mechanical and an electrochemical species.Envisaging the origin of the inhibiting substances, primary and secondary inhibitors are distinguished. This subdivision is applied to interface and electrolyte-layer inhibition. Even by their nature, membrane inhibition and passivation are secondary. Finally, the inhibition of two or more electrode reactions running down simultaneously and their further classification are treated. It is called special attention to peculiarities of the most important representative of this group, the corrosion inhibition (including vapour phase inhibition). The review on methodology will be given in part II to be published later.
