Vitamins in MilkThe development of chromatography into the preparative manufacture of pure organic substances, carried out with the use of carotin as an example, was connected with investigations concerning the vitamin content of milk. The lactoflavin isolated from cow's milk showed that vitamins are required in the animal body as building blocks for ferments. Human milk contains nitrogen-containing saccharides which act as growth promoters for the mutant of the L. Bifidus discovered by Paul György. N-acetyl-d-glucosamine, l-fucose, d-galactose and d-glucose were identified as cleavage products. Colostrum and meconium are particularly rich in this growth promoter.

Die Ausgestaltung der Chromatographie zur präparativen Reindarstellung organischer Substanzen, die am Beispiel des Carotins erfolgte, stand im Zusammenhang mit Untersuchungen über den Vitamingehalt der Milch. An dem aus Kuhmilch isolierten Lactoflavin wurde erkannt, daß Vitamine im Tierkörper als Bausteine von Fermenten benötigt werden. In der Frauenmilch finden sich N-haltige Saccharide, die als Wuchsstoff für eine von Paul György entdeckte Mutante des L. Bifidus wirken. Als Spaltstücke wurden N-Acetyl-d-glucosamin, I-Fucose, d-Galactose und d-Glucose identifiziert. Besonders reich an diesem Wuchsstoff sind das Colostrum und das Meconium.
