Summary The following rules are recommended for the attainment of the highest precision inherent in a given balance. (1) The weight of the object is nearly completely counterbalanced with suitable tares and weights, and the remaining difference of weight is computed from the equilibrium position of the beam. (2)Gauss' transposition weighing should be used in preference to direct weighing since this practically halves the standard deviation of the observed weight. (3) Calibrated weights should be used in properly limited number, and the corrections to true weight should be applied. The latter must be determined by a suitable calibration procedure. (4) Tares are selected so that their volume is practically equal to that of the object. (5) The balance shall be provided with a rider, the weight of which does not exceed by more than one thousand times the standard deviation of the instrument indication. (6) The weighing itself is best performed by computing the deflection from the points of reversal of the swinging pointer. A rider position should be used which gives an instrument indication (deflection times the value of the division of the pointer scale) which does not exceed six tenths of the weight indicated by one division of the rider scale. The recommended procedure gives in a simple and efficient manner the highest precision of which the balance is capable.
