    Description: This CD contains results from some of the most sophisticated computer climate model experiments. Technial information on the model parameter are supplied, but so too is a wealth of illustrated and animated background information that will be useful to those not familiar with climate modelling or the interpretation of paleoclimates from the geological record. Climate model results for the Late Carboniferous, latest Jurassic, middle and latest Cretaceous, Eocene, Miocene, glacial inception (1250000 yrs), the last glacial maximum (21000 yrs), mid Holocene (12000 yrs), the present day and the present day with 2x present levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide are given together with data of the oberserved present day climate. Results are given in the form of animations for temperature, soil moisture, precipitation, mean sea level air pressure, snow depth, storminess and cloudiness. The operation of the models is explained along with information on the structure and dynamics of the atmosphere and how the geological record can be used to determine past climate.

    Description: The genus Protatlanta is thought to be monotypic and is part of the Atlantidae, a family of shelled heteropods. These microscopic planktonic gastropods are poorly known, although research on their ecology is now increasing in response to concerns about the effects of ocean acidification on calcareous plankton. A correctly implemented taxonomy of the Atlantidae is fundamental to this progressing field of research and it requires much attention, particularly using integrated molecular and morphological techniques. Here we use DNA barcoding, shell morphology and biogeography to show that the genus Protatlanta includes at least two valid species in the Atlantic Ocean. Protatlanta souleyeti and Protatlanta sculpta were found to be separate species, with different shell morphology and separated by a K2P genetic distance of 19% sequence divergence at the Cytochrome Oxidase 1 gene. This evidence supports the revival of the species name P. sculpta, which was described by Issel in 1911, but has not been recognised as a valid species since 1915.

    Description: The impact of anthropogenic ocean acidification (OA) on marine ecosystems is a vital concern facing marine scientists and managers of ocean resources. Euthecosomatous pteropods (holoplanktonic gastropods) represent an excellent sentinel for indicating exposure to anthropogenic OA because of the sensitivity of their aragonite shells to the OA conditions less favorable for calcification. However, an integration of observations, experiments and modelling efforts is needed to make accurate predictions of how these organisms will respond to future changes to their environment. Our understanding of the underlying organismal biology and life history is far from complete and must be improved if we are to comprehend fully the responses of these organisms to the multitude of stressors in their environment beyond OA. This review considers the present state of research and understanding of euthecosomatous pteropod biology and ecology of these organisms and considers promising new laboratory methods, advances in instrumentation (such as molecular, trace elements, stable isotopes, palaeobiology alongside autonomous sampling platforms, CT scanning and high-quality video recording) and novel field-based approaches (i.e. studies of upwelling and CO2 vent regions) that may allow us to improve our predictive capacity of their vulnerability and/or resilience. In addition to playing a critical ecological and biogeochemical role, pteropods can offer a significant value as an early-indicator of anthropogenic OA. This role as a sentinel species should be developed further to onsolidate their potential use within marine environmental management policy making.

    Notes: A modified high-pressure, stopped-flow apparatus has been developed to enable kinetic experiments to be monitored spectrophotometrically to 200 MPa, with efficient mixing of the reactant solutions. This apparatus is compact, relatively inexpensive to construct, and the solutions are only exposed to inert materials, such as Kel-F, Teflon, quartz (low-pressure windows), and glass or Viton. The drive-syringe pistons are propelled by a step motor housed on top of the stopped-flow unit inside the pressure vessel, resulting in a dead time for the system of ∼10 ms at 25 °C.

    Notes: Electron emission from ferroelectric thin films (≤1 μm thick) is demonstrated. In addition, electron energy distributions have been measured using an Auger electron spectrometer. The electron emission measurements were performed using ferroelectric cathodes based on this Pb(Zr0.53Ti0.47)O3 (PZT) films and 80–110 μm Pb0.93La0.07(Z0.53Ti0.47)O3 (PLZT) layered capacitors with Pt top and bottom electrodes. Current densities in the range of 0.5–1.5 mA/cm2 were measured from the PLZT cathodes excited with 100–400 V pulses, which produced electrons of about 265 eV with a narrow energy distribution (full width at half-maximum of about 30 eV). On the other hand, current densities in the range 0.07–0.15 μA/cm2 were measured for thin film PZT-based cathodes excited with pulses in the range 10–40 V. The initial results suggest that the electron emission current may depend, among other factors, on the thickness of the ferroelectric layer, the applied excitation voltage, and the interval between the polarizing and switching pulses. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
