    Notes: Summary A synthetic Bt gene encoding a truncated version of the CryIA(b) protein derived from Bacillus thuringiensis was successfully introduced into elite maize using microprojectile bombardment of immature embryos. The method used to initiate and identify transformation events is described. We describe the detailed parameters used for the Biolistics device as well as the plasmids used for the transformations. The plasmids contained the synthetic Bt gene driven by either the 35S CaMV promoter or a combination of two tissue-specific promoters, leaf and pollen, derived from maize. Specific conditions for the culture of Type I callus from immature embryos, the phosphinothricin (PPT) selection protocol, and the regeneration of plants are discussed. T0 and T1 plants were initially identified using the pH-dependent chlorophenol red test and/or the histochemical β-glucuronidase (GUS) assay. PCR and Southern data confirm the presence of the 35S CaMV promoter and the synthetic Bt gene.

    Notes: The type of surface of the perforated plate influences the performance of a perforated-plate column. Pilot plant data on a 4-in column for the system toluenediethylamine-water at 20°C. show that when the water phase is dispersed and the direction of mass transfer is from the continuous toluene to the dispersed water phase polyethylene plates give a continuous stream of droplets and a higher efficiency, but that when the direction of mass transfer is from the dispersed water to the continuous toluene phase the metal plates give the higher efficiency.

    Notes: This paper concerns a study of radiation as a contributing mechanism in the transfer of heat between discrete solid particles. A theory for transfer in such systems is generalized to include planar-, spherical-, and cylindrical-bed geometries; because of the particulate nature of the system the generalization is given in terms of finite-difference equations. Transfer experiments were performed in a quiescent cylindrical bed with an axial heat source and a cylinderical containing-wall sink. Heat fluxes and radial-temperature profiles were measured. As the experiments were arranged, only modest temprature gradients were established between source and sink, but the ambient sink temperature was taken in steps from 100° to 1,000°C. For a bed of 3.8-mm.-diameter alumina spheres the ratio of heat transferred by radiation to that transferred by conduction was estimated to increase with average bed temperature from the order of 0.1 at 100°C., to 1.2 at 1,000°C. The effects of temperature on bed reflectivity and transmissivity and on apparent boundary-temperature discontinuities are discussed.

    Notes: The matrix method which has been employed in the theory of ferromagnetism is potentially very useful in treating statistical problems concerning linear macromolecules with repeating units. The method is reviewed briefly and applied to seven illustrative problems (two of which are not worked out completely). Six of these involve ion binding or titration curves of polyelectrolytes and one has to do with the question of imperfections (missing hydrogen bonds) in the α-helix.

    Notes: The benzoyl peroxide-initiated polymerization of allylidene diacetate has been studied. Kinetic runs were carried out dilatometrically at 50, 60, and 80°C., a wide range of initiator concentration being studied at each temperature. In one separate experiment, the relative rates of peroxide consumption and polymer formation were determined. Polymer samples were isolated and studied for molecular weight and initiator fragment concentration. All the experiments showed the polymerization to be of the type described as degradative chain transfer. A kinetic scheme is proposed which envisages the formation of two distinct types of monomer radical depending on the direction of hydrogen transfer: one is propagating, the other stabilized and nonpropagating.
