Notes: A broad empirical study of nine independent sets of data on fluidized-bed heat transfer is presented, with correlation of the data in two groups. A wide range of the many variables is covered, and some data on commercial units are included. Data for external (i.e., walls of the fluidizing vessel) and internal (i.e., tubes in the bed) heat transfer surfaces are correlated graphically. The correlations indicate the importance of heat transport by the mobile particles and of unsteady state conduction in the gas.

Notes: Molecular weight distributions of homopolymer and graft polymer obtained from the gamma and photoinitiated polymerization of methyl methacrylate with natural rubber latex have been determined. Broad distributions were found with peaks of low and high molecular weight polymer. The distributions were insufficiently defined to make definite assignments to the speeds of the reactions involved but were not inconsistent with the mechanism proposed in an earlier paper from kinetic considerations. Details are given of the column fractionation apparatus employed.

Notes: Details are given of a further modification to the Ray ebulliometer which permits easy interchange of the Cottrell pump tube. The stability of the apparatus with different pump tubes and pumping conditions was also examined. Molecular weights obtained with the use of two ebulliometers and three solvent systems are compared. The validity of the recently developed ultracentrifuge methods for determining physical properties of molecules with molecular weights in the range 300 to 10,000 was checked by using a pure compound of known molecular weight. Agreement was obtained also between the data obtained by the Klainer and Kegeles method and separate sedimentation and diffusion data. The molecular weight of an ethyl acetate extract of black wattle tannin was determined by the ebulliometric and these ultracentrifuge methods. The ultracentrifuge value for the whole extract decreased with time due to sedimentation of high molecular weight impurities. The final ultracentrifuge weight-average molecular weight (1175) is in good agreement with the number-average value for the tannin polyphenols (922) obtained by ebulliometry. The difference between the values confirms the known heterogeneity of the polyphenols.

Notes: The sedimentation coefficients of four normal γ-globulin preparations and six preparations from patients with malignant diseases were determined. No statistically significant differences were found between either the mean [s] values or the slopes of the concentration regression lines between the two groups. Significant differences in the sedimentation behaviour, however, appeared between preparations within each group, especially between the globulins isolated from the blood of cancer patients.

Notes: Butadiene copolymers of low molecular weight containing combined acid groups react with metal oxides to give products with unusual properties. The salts, particularly the zinc and cadmium compounds, exhibit plastic flow under slowly applied stresses but are highly elastic on sharp impact; products closely resembling the silicone “bouncing putty” can be obtained. Although these salts contain many “crosslinks” per chain they are, within limits, soluble in solvents such as benzene or pyridine. The solubility is determined by the molecular weight of the copolymer, its acid content, and the nature of the metal ion. Their solutions are characterized by marked changes in viscosity on dilution and they develop osmotic pressures in dilute solution comparable to those from the unreacted acid copolymers. The high molecular weight polymers are strong elastomers which show marked creep under stress. The properties of salts of both high and low molecular weight copolymers are consistent with the view that exchange reactions can occur between ionic crosslinks on different chains when stressed or under the influence of solvents. This ability to relieve local stresses on stretching is thought to be of consequence when considering the tensile properties of these and other elastomers.
