Description / Table of Contents: Zinc Dust CompoundsZinc dust compounds are consisting chiefly of zinc dust and small amounts of an adhesive and a solvent. The dry film should contain of 94 per cent of zinc dust at least. Under these conditions the particles are in metallic contact with each other as well as with the metal surface. The anti-corrosive properties of zinc dust compounds are due to cathodic protection as well as to sealing off the atmosphere. The cover becomes more compact by the formation of insoluble zinc salts which increase the anti-corrosive properties. Damaged spots of zinc dust compounds films in sea water prove better anti-corrosive properties than those of minium films. These products could also be applied to slightly rusted steel surfaces without any danger of under rusting. They are generally less surface sensitive than the usual anti-corrosive paints. Examples in practice prove their great possibilities of use. These compounds have proved to be good not only on iron and steel but also in the reconditioning of old hot galvanized constructions which had been exposed to atmosphere for a longer time.

Description / Table of Contents: Designing of Constructions to Make Painting and Protection against Rust Easy (Protection against Rust Begins at the Drawing Board)Construction elements like inaccessible corners and narrow slits should be prevented. To avoid waterbags, channal and angle irons shall be arranged with their openings showing down. Acute angles and connections of lattice masts, tube bridges, and supports which cannot be cleaned easily are unsatisfactory for painting. You should prefer welded constructions to riveted ones, and tube constructions to those made of sectional iron. Horizontal surfaces are endangered by staying water, depositions of dust and soot, and mossy growth. Smoke gases should be kept off railway bridges by wooden shields. Riveted joints and slits must be sealed; bases of girders may not be set in concrete. Suspensors for scaffolds will help to reduce the costs of renovation. Stationnary cars on the underframe of bridges are very useful. Covered girders as well as overlapping joints, and nodal sheets must be painted before they are installed.Welded constructions have advantageously less starting points for rusting than riveted ones because rivet heads are very often the points of precocius rusting.

Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion Protection by Paint Systems, as Appraised by Statistics and Exemplified by Some Prominent Steel BuildingsThe technical literature contains a number of data concerning losses due to corrosion (in quantitative and monetary terms), the cost of corrosion protection (cost of labour and materials, etc.), and the size (in square metres) of the surface areas of steel buildings to be protected by paint systems. An attempt has been made to determine these items statistically. The example of the history of the paint protection of a prominent steel structure, viz. the Eiffel Tower, shows that effective corrosion protection by means of paints is possible if the coats are renewed in good time.

Description / Table of Contents: Documentation and Protection against Corrosion by PaintsThe protection against corrosion by painsts plays an important part in the range of protective methode available.Modern paints differ considerably from those used thirty or even ten years ago.Successive developments require continuous testing. The recording and evaluation of the results of short-term tests in the laboratory, of weathering tests and practical applications are usually unsatisfactory.A significant documentation would enable a successful comparison and interpretation of results to be given. Thus, some directions on how to prepare a documentation are given.Besides the standard DIN 53210 “Determination of the Degree of Rusting” there is a draft on the determination of the quality of a paint coat. Results are collected in card index files.

Notes: Mass transfer coefficients have been determined for the dissolution of Na2S2O3·5H2O crystals in water under conditions of turbulent agitation in a mixing vessel. The dissolution was carried out in a steady-flow process in which the area of selt crystals and the concentration of the solution in the mixing vessel were constant during each run. A comparison is made with previously unpublished results for batch runs in a similar system, and a method is developed for calculating the surface area of salt particles suspended in the mixing vessel under steady-flow conditions.
