Notes: Essential features of the crystallization of unoriented high polymers from the molten and supercooled liquid conditions are outlined to provide a background for a proposed structure and mechanism of growth of spherulites. Homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation mechanisms of crystallite growth are discussed. Spherulites are recognized as crudely oriented spheroidal aggregates of crystallites and their attached amorphous regions. It is proposed that a spherulite originates from a single nucleus and that growth proceeds thence in a statistically radical fashion until all crystallizable domains are utilized or until growth is arrested due to increasing viscosity of the medium. It is assumed that crystallite growth occurs by lateral accretion of suitable oriented molecular segments and that nucleation proceeds from one crystallite to another by means of fine streamers of crystalline order (protofibrils) which may grow either by longitudinal extension along fringes or by lateral aggregation of very short segments. The predominant shapes of the crystallites are believed to determine the structure and optical properties of the spherulite. A roughly conical arrangement of crystallites around a spherulite radius is preferred to a helical one.

Description / Table of Contents: Protection against Corrosion in Light-Oil-ShipsRefined light oils cause bigger corrosion damages in tankers than crude oils. The authors present a survey of the protective methods for light oil tankers as developed by Ess Research amp; Engineering Co in cooperation with Esso Shipping Co. The protective methods tested are dealing with inhibitive films formed by water and oil soluble inhibitors, cathodic protection, protective coats of paints, desiccation and application of low alloyed steels. The most suitable method must be selected according to the range of application of the method and to the special conditions of the tanker. An economic treatment contains a comparison of the charges of the operation of ships protected by one of the methods mentioned above and of unprotected ones.

Notes: The different types of viscosity behavior which have been observed for polyelectrolytes are discussed and classified. Data are presented for sodium deoxyribonucleate and for sodium polyacrylate of different molecular sizes, and give information on the influence on the viscosity of the degree of polymerization and the flexibility of the molecule. The influence of the shear gradient is also considered. A qualitative interpretation is given based on the size of the polyions and their mutual interactions.

Notes: The kinetics of crystallization of a branched polyethylene have been studied dilatometrically, spectroscopically, and microscopically at small degrees of supercooling (ca. 0-10°C.). In order to assess the extent to which results of different methods are in agreement with each other, apparent induction times and maximuin crystallization rates are compared. On the basis of these data, the results of different experimental techniques using different types of sample are in general agreement. However, there do exist small, but significant, differences which appear to be outside experimental error. The results are shown to be in essential agreement with present theories of nucleation and of crystallization. The observations are interpreted in terms of the processes occurring during crystallization. The relationship of dynamic mechanical properties to previous thermal histories is considered and a qualitative interpretation is presented.

Notes: Thermal polymerization of styrene and of p-chlorostyrene at 100°C. in benzaldehyde and p-chlorobenzaldehyde has been investigated. Intrinsic viscosities of the resulting polymers and per cent conversion-time determinations have been made and are used to obtain DFn and second-order rate constants, respectively, as functions of monomer concentration for the four systems. Chain transfer constants for each monomer in the two solvents and Qtr and etr values for benzaldehyde and p-chlorobenzaldehyde are calculated and the results discussed.

Notes: Experimental details are given for the interfacial polycondensation of thirteen polyamides having widely different structures. The method involves the fast, room-temperature reaction in a two-phase system between diamines and diacid chlorides. Aliphatic, alicyclic, and aromatic reactants, primary and secondary diamines, and many reactants containing other functional groups are all operable. The preparations illustrate a variety of procedural modifications and point up the simplicity, rapidity, and broad applicability of the method.

Notes: Hydrocarbon polymers prepared by the hot tube pyrolytic dehydrogenation of 1,4-dimethyl substituted aromatic hydrocarbons have been studied and characterized as to chemical and physical properties. Tough, chemically resistant products were obtained, but fabrication of these polyhydrocarbons was difficult due to the relative intractability of the polymers obtained.
