Summary 1. It was found from measurements of the isotherms for the adsorption of lower normal and branched aliphatic alcohols at 25° on various oxide catalysts that at unimolecular coverage the adsorption falls in the series: CH3OH〉C2H5OH〉n-C3H7OH〉n-C4H9OH〉i-C3H7OH=i-C4H9OH〉s-C4H9OH〉t-C4H9OH. 2. The values of the elementary areas occupied by adsorbed alcohol molecules on the surface depend both on the structure of the alcohol and on the nature of the catalyst. 3. It is suggested that at moderate temperatures the normal orientation of adsorbed molecules (hydroxy groups toward the surface) is accompanied by flat orientation to an extent which varies for different alcohols and catalysts. 4. The concept of the “effective specific surface” of adsorbed molecules is introduced.
