Conclusions 1. In vibropress upsetting, the reduction temperature is determined by the temperature of the plates: a) with hot plates the specimens are deformed hot, even if not preheated; b) with cold or just warm plates, initially hot specimens cool down almost to the temperature of the platens during upsetting. 2. In the upsetting of heat treatable (age hardening) alloys between cold or slightly heated anvils, the temperature of the specimen should be close to the annealing temperature. 3. The highest ductility is attained in reducing cold specimens between hot platens. Optimum platen temperature is 300–400°C (570–750°F) for alloy AK6.
