Notes: [Auszug] Of more immediate interest, however, is the apparent lack of any other periods in the spectral estimates of the data resulting from the analysis by Stacey and Westcott. Of particular concern is the absence of a spectral peak corresponding to a period of 6 months. We believe that this is due to the ...

Notes: Summary A new Thiobacillus has been isolated which, though capable of strictly autotrophic growth, requires the addition of organic substrates to a mineral-thiosulfate medium for optimum development. The effects of such supplements on growth have been described and tentatively interpreted. The organism also grows with yeast extract and glucose or glutamate in the absence of sulfur compounds. The new isolate has been named T. intermedius, and a description of the species has been provided.

Notes: Summary The problem of satellite observation of infrared radiation is studied in terms of geometric and spectral variation of atmospheric radiation. As an aid in interpretation of satellite observations, the anisotropy of out-going radiation at the top of the atmosphere and at the satellite level is computed for different atmospheric models and spectral regions to characterize radiation from the lower, middle, and high troposphere. It is shown that limb darkening is an extremely sharp property of the atmosphere as viewed from an orbiting satellite.

Notes: The electrochemical properties of polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride, and a copolymer of vinyl acetate and polyvinyl chloride have been studied. By means of membrane and bi-ionic potential measurements, it has been shown that films made from these polymers are cation-selective with a very low ion-exchange capacity. The variation of membrane potential with external salt solution concentration occurs in a manner which may be predicted by the Meyer, Teorell, Sievers equations for permselective membranes. These have been used to calculate the fixed ion concentration within the polymers. The results suggest a possible mechanism for the passage of ions through mechanically perfect films.
