Abstract:
Summary Five methods of mineralization of organic compounds are cited and described with regard to determining chlorine, bromine, or iodine in them. They are: oxyhydric combustion; combustion in oxygen, either in a narrow empty tube or in a flask of the Schöniger type; attack in a nickel bomb with sodium peroxide; mineralization in sulfuric acid. The authors combine the foregoing with titration of the resulting ions by potentiometric argentometry (method of adjusted equivalence potentials) for chlorine and bromine, and by iodometry for iodine. The methods of mineralization most interesting for continuous determinations are combustions in oxygen in an empty narrow tube or in a flask though if the presence of heteroelements interferes in the final determination it may be advisable to employ sodium peroxide for the decomposition or better sulfuric acid. The authors state precisely the conditions where the methods of argentometric titration can be applied using the principle of adjusted potentials or iodometric titration in the aqueous solutions obtained from the different methods of mineralization studied by them.
Notes:
