Notes: In order to study the effect of glucose substitution on the sedimentation velocities of the T-even phage DNA's, T2 and T2*, and T6 and T6* bacteriophages were grown with H3and P32 labeling. Zone sedimentation of the DNA's isolated from these phagea showed that the glucosylated DNA's from both T2 and T6 sediment faster than the nonglucosylated molecules. Nonglucosylated DNA from TG and T2 phages sedimented with the same velocity, suggesting that the molecules of these phages are of the same length.

Notes: At temperatures far below the heat distortion point, the dissipation factor (and therefore power factor) of epoxy resins is comparably low - in the order of 0.001-0.01. Internally flexibilized, polyester-modified resins may have higher loss tangents, in the order of 0.01-0.10, even at room temperature. At temperatures far above the heat distortion point, anhydride curing agents give lower dissipation factors than do amines or acids. With anhydride cures, the higher molecular weight resins investigated cure faster than the lower molecular weight resins, give lower elevated temperature power factors and loss tangents, and are tougher. With any hardener-epoxy resin system, the optimum elevated temperature power factor, weight loss on aging and heat distortion point will probably depend on a close examination of the optimum hardener/resin ratio. With certain anhydride-cured low molecular weight epoxy resin systems, an increased rate of cure and lower elevated temperature power factor may be obtained by use of a small amount of higher molecular weight (polyhydroxy) epoxy resin. Attempts to compare the effect on power factor of changing the hydroxyl groups to less mobile dipoles by acetylation were unsuccessful, since the resulting acetoxy groups changed the cure mechanisms. However studies with resins of different molecular weights indicated that the effect of hydroxyl content on elevated temperature power factor is subordinate to other effects such as the rigidity of the cured resin system, rate of cure and ionic impurities. Acetylation of hydroxyl-containing epoxy resins may inhibit cure with some curing agents, due to side reactions of the resulting acetoxy group with specific hardeners.

Notes: A 50-gal. growth chamber is described together with its air filter and humidifier. The unit was designed especially for the production of Neurospora crassa, and was found to be effective in producing bulk amounts of mycelia with a high specific activity of tryptophan synthetase.

Notes: The distribution of various cell constituents of Bacillus megaterium has been studied in an aqueous two-phase system containing the two polymers dextran and polythylene glycol. The difference in behaviour between cell walls, lipid granules and soluble cell material are such that a considerable fractionation of a suspension of disrupted cells may be obtained after a few counter-current distributions. A mixture of whole cells and protoplasts can also be fractionated in this phase system. If sodium chloride is added to the phase system, vegetative cells and spores can be separated from each other.

Notes: It was established that phenol-2,4-disulfonyl chloride and α-naphthol-2, 4-disulfonyl chloride introduce new intramolecular or tertiary bonds into lysozyme. The phenolic hydroxyl group seems to make the cross linking reagents soluble in aqueous media; it was established that a sulfonylating; species does dissolve prior to hydrolysis but that the chlorosulfonyl groups are hydrolyzed within seconds of dissolution. New covalently linked residues were shown to be introduced by different, spectra. Peptide maps of the lysozyme treated with phenol-2,4-disulfonyl chloride. peroxidized, and digested with trypsin showed definite deletions and additions when compared with the control. Partial analysis of the peptides showed that cross linking between ε-amino groups of lysine residues had occurred. A certain degree of stabilization of lysozyme to inactivation by certain inactivating conditions was noted after treatment with the two reagents. Ultra-centrifugal analysis of the lysozyme treated with phenol-2,4-disulfonyl chloride showed that there was no detectable fraction having a higher molecular weight than native lysozyme. Tentative assignments of positions of cross linking were made.

Notes: Four homopolymers (dimethyl-, phenylmethyl-, diphenyl-, and trifluoropropylmethylpolysiloxanes) and two copolymer systems (dimethylsiloxane-phenylmethylsiloxane and phenylmethylsiloxane-diphenylsiloxane) have been studied by observing spherulite nucleation, growth, and melting. A characteristic crystallization temperature is proposed which can be considered representative of the equilibrium freezing-melting point. This work isolates the crystallinity characteristics of pure siloxane polymer and copolymer systems.

Notes: A number of polyglycidyl and poly-2,3-epoxybutyl derivatives of phenols were prepared. An attempt was made to correlate the flexural deformation temperatures of the amine cured polyepoxies with the following structural characteristics of the epoxy compounds: per cent oxirane, functionality, ring substituents other than epoxy (such as alkyl, alkenyl, aryl), and substitution of 2,3-epoxybutyl for glycidyl group.

Notes: A process for one-step polyallylation of phenols was developed. Phenol is polyallylated in xylene in the presence of 3 moles of finely divided sodium hydroxide. Three moles of allyl chloride are added at such a rate as to maintain the reflux temperature at 110 to 120°C. Water is continuously azeotropically removed. The product contains allyl ethers of mono-, di-, and triallyl phenol. The bulk of the material is allyl ether of dially phenol which can be subjected to Claisen rearrangement followed by glycidyl ether formation and epoxidation of the glycidyl ether of triallyl phenol.

Notes: Two reaction paths which can be followed when an acid chloride reacts with an alcohol are discussed. The role of pyridine as solvent and catalyst in this reaction is described. The importance of inductive and resonance effects and the size and arrangement of groups near the carbonyl are emphasized. The heterogeneous preparations of seven cellulose partial esters, the phenylacetate, benzoate, trimethylacetate, triphenylacetate, β,β,β-triphenylpropionate, α-(4-biphenylyl)phenylacetate, and mesitoate are described. Pronounced interference with esterification is noted only in the preparation of the triphenylacetate. Steric hindrance and a poor ability to ionize are considered to be responsible for this result. Outstanding resistance to saponification, thought to be the result of steric hindrance and a reduced tendency to ionize, is reported for three of the cellulose esters, the triphenylacetate, the β,β,β-triphenylpropionate, and the mesitoate.
